Decided to try a local restaurant while visiting family and fairplay and they recommended Salon Mexico. It was around 2 pm when we stopped by and it was not busy. They started us off with complimentary chips and salsa. The salsa was really good! The waiter was very attentive and took our orders promptly. Food came out rather quickly. I ordered the cheese enchilada which came with rice and beans. The enchilada needed more sauce as it was dry and too cheesy. More sauce would fix that. The beans and rice were ok. I wasn't expecting the most amazing Mexican food being from Texas but this was alright. My husband's burrito looks really good and he very much enjoyed it. Prices are very reasonable. All the buildings in Fairplay are historical so it's super neat to dine at some of these places. We all very much enjoyed our meals and would return. read more

Rating on the mountain scale (what ever that is): solid Mexican fare, the salsa was very good. Service was excellent and the food came out quickly. Complimentary chips and salsa too. Ambiance was fine, older building that has seen better days but clean. Bathrooms were well maintained. Definitely worth driving a little further in to downtown Fairplay. read more

Wow! Delicious dinner this evening at Salon Mexico in Fairplay! Unique and very flavorful salsa delivered with warm chips to start. The house margaritas were quite nice and the beef fajitas - a huge portion - absolutely stole the show! Tender and savory meat grilled to perfection and surrounded by perfect, thinly cut peppers and onions, all delivered on a sizzling platter! Accompanied by yummy beans, rice, pico, cheese, sour cream and excellent guac. The best! Service was very friendly and provided all we needed. The ambiance of the place is unique and well-remodeled. It's Fairplay. So you don't know what you're going to get food wise. Salon Mexico was our first meal after arriving for the long weekend. It's in an assuming blue house off of the main drag of State Road 9. And to our hearts content, the food was great! Happy hour margaritas and complimentary chips and salsa was an easy decision. Marg was a tad sweet for my liking, but when you find a marg under $10 these days it's tough to complain. Interesting it was served in a mule mug. The chips passed the crunch test, and salsa was tasty. We shouldn't have ordered the queso fundido, because the size of our entrées were laughably large. The queso fundido didn't look at all like a traditional fundido when presented, due to a generous layer of ground beef atop the cheese. With that being said, this stuff was BANGING. We filled up way too quickly on this and if you tried us you'd know why. Enchiladas Divorciadas hit the table and I couldn't believe the size of the plate. Absolutely massive. Green sauce, red sauce and mole sauce. I opted for chicken, which always seems like the most reliable protein for enchiladas. Delicious from the first bite to the leftovers the next day. Even the rice and beans were good (the true tell of a good Mexican restaurant). Lively setting, massive booths, reasonable prices, locals and travelers alike on a Friday night. If you're looking for what has been the best carne asada.... This is the place. Sure, it's in the middle of nowhere, but it's worth it!! Tried the queso and the guacamole.... All very good with good flavor. Topped it off with a couple jalapeno margaritas. The also has good flavor and they brought out sautéed peppers that were a good topping. Being a treasure hunter and connoisseur of great food, Im always searching for that hidden gem. Today I found one. Salon Mexico served up the flavor with their Tampiquena Steak platter. A generous serving of Skirt steak seared to perfection, accompanied by a flavorful chicken mole enchilada. The dish also came with a good portion of rice, guacamole, pico de gallo, and the most delicious, sweet and smokey flavored refried beans Ive ever had. The waitstaff are professional, accommodating, and friendly. I will definitely be coming back to try their pastore and carnitas tacos. Provecho! read more

We came here last minute after a long day of skiing. We had reservations in Breck, but wanted to stay close to our air BNB. We are all Texans and we were all super impressed! The food was so good! Guac and queso definitely a must. Loved the homemade salsa and flautas, green enchiladas and steak fajitas on point! If I could give this place zero stars, I would. We went there because it had good reviews but y'all are lying! We are from Texas, and know good Mexican food. We ordered iced tea and didn't get it until after our food arrived. Boyfriend had a chalupa and taco plate. They covered it in their nasty salsa that he didn't ask for. My beef fajitas were over seasoned with something really sweet. The tea tasted like what I would imagine toilet water would taste like. My boyfriend went outside to smoke a cigarette, and I told the waiter we were not paying for our food because of how disgusting it was, and we left. Food was so so. My husband got the enchilada/relleno plate and declared it edible. I got steak Jalisco which was good but very spicy. The tortillas it was served with were old and stale, the refried beans were a strange off white color and had no flavor, the rice was definitely not fresh and featured various petrified vegetables. So while the steak was good, the sides were inedible. I also ordered a house margarita which was so sour I couldn't drink it. I explained to the waiter and was told all their margaritas are like that. This was so sour it made my eyes water. I found another waiter who made me a new margarita that was drinkable. Just want to reiterate that our waiter was terrible. Never asked if everything was ok. Only checked in when he wanted us to pay (and then was super rude about the margarita) So 3 is the best I can give. It's edible. read more

We stopped in on our way to Mt. Princeton. It was the day before Thanksgiving and we were so glad they were open. We only had margaritas, queso, salsa, and chips. Salon Mexico is located within walking distance of all the fun spots of downtown FairPlay. We were staying at an airb&b in Alma and visited FairPlay and immediately were interested in their menu and building. The food was great. Affordable and large portions. The salsa was different from your average Mexican restaurant, which was great. The chips were amazing. Skinny margarita was the best I've had in a long time. The food had excellent flavor. Ambience and service were fine. Food was deplorable. My fish tacos were big overly breaded fried fish stick length slabs of frozen fish, three to a tortilla (and there were three tortillas) with some shredded lettuce and some sort of mayonnaise-based sauce. I tried to peel some of the batter off, only to discover that even with the batter removed, the fish itself didn't taste at all good. The guac was made with vinegar- like the nasty stuff you get pre-made in a grocery store. The beans were just a runny pile of pinto beans with no flavor at all, and the rice had no flavor either. The plates were massive, and even if the food had been edible, I can't imagine that anyone could have eaten that much food! I felt bad for the young man who waited on us, as it was clear that he knew this food was sub-par. Perhaps it was a bad night, but really, I think it was all just bad frozen and pre-made grocery store caliber food. I've eaten at 100's of Mexican restaurants in many countries, and this was hands down unacceptable. The salsa was flavorful, and I do like it hot, but it was painfully hot, so I couldn't even mask the taste of the food with it. My husband had the shrimp enchiladas, and felt equally disappointed.
