Absolutely stellar! I made appointments ahead with my friend for my vow renewal trip to New Orleans. Upon arrival we were greeted excitedly and shown to the waiting area with choices of a coffee/tea bar and bottled water, and only waited maybe 5 minutes for our stylists Kelly and Caroline. My friend had Kelly, and I had Caroline. I can not say enough good things about them. Both were attentive and gave us exactly what we wanted, with suggestions to make my style just a little better. I asked for secure but comfortable and Caroline absolutely delivered! No pins jabbing in my scalp, hair pulling or any discomfort at all, and my style was beautiful and lasted 6 hours before my ceremony and all night after. My stylist, Ira, is likely the best stylist I have ever had. She is super talented, very accommodating and does amazing things with my hair! First off, let's start with the salon. Salon M is decorated in cool, blueish hues, gorgeous mirrors, exposed brick, and guests are welcomed by the always smiling and wonderful Celeste. There is a wonderful selection of high quality hair products for sale, as well as some incredible homemade jewelry, candles - -sounds like a lot but all in very good taste. Upon walking through, this place just exudes class! The waiting area has all you could need - cold bottled water, hot coffee, a kettle for hot tea, and beautiful oversized windows, allowing in a ton of natural light! The waiting area also doubles as a space where you can get your make up done for a special occasion, and you can even purchase the products used on your make over. I usually treat myself to this at least once a year, for the Zulu Ball. Now to Ira... She is AMAZING! She is warm, welcoming, talented, and has turned me onto this gorgeous color and short hair cut that makes my painfully thin hair look full, voluminous, and just perfect. I can not say enough good things about this place!!!!!! I found this salon on yelp because I didn't know where to go and they had good reviews so I decided to go there. I called on a Wednesday and they had me in on Friday at 7:30 am!!! Awesome morning hours!! Ok besides that, I had red hair that faded out to pink and it was looking really rough. My appointment was with Caroline! All the reviews were about her so I was looking forward to a great stylist. But when I tell you I got way way way more than I bargained for. She was an absolute angel. She was so perfect in every single way. So sweet and kind and never once did she complain. I requested a highlight appointment with Ira. Before I began my consult, I went to the restroom. The toilet would not flush. When I told the front desk, the lady said oh yea I should have told you that. When Ira brought me back to evaluate what I wanted, I told her I wanted highlights. Ira began working on my hair. She performed a very basic procedure I am familiar with as I have been getting highlights for 15+ years. When the processing job was completed, she gave me a toner and a wash. After my hair was dried, I went to the counter to check out. Ira come to the counter and said "I did a dimensional, a toner, and a blow out" and then proceeded to charge me for three services I did not request. I requested a basic highlight. I did not request the other three services. I was unaware that blowing my hair dry was considered a blow out and an extra charge. I suggest this salon communicate procedures being done and gain permission from your clients before deciding what you are going to do and charge without their consent. read more

Salon M is a salon located in a Victorian cottage renovated after Katrina. The décor is elegant and tasteful, and accentuates the building's New Orleans "charm." The shampoo room is especially tranquil. The area located in the back of the salon is set up like a café and results in a warm and cheery, yet relaxing place to wait. Lisa Marquette (the "M" in Salon M) has been my hair stylist for more than 10 years. I became her client when she was at H2O Salon & Spa. Lisa is an amazing stylist. She is an expert at color, especially natural highlights. Lisa is typically very attentive and does a good job of listening to her clients. On the rare occasion that Lisa was unavailable, I have had my hair styled by other stylists in the salon with good results (I especially like Ashley, who did an excellent job with my cut and color). The only drawback to Salon M is that Lisa has a loyal following and only works a few days a week. It may be hard to get an appointment, especially if you are not flexible about the stylist you want or the time you are available. I usually book out my appointments for the entire year. The stylists & manager at Salon M are usually good about fitting in clients when possible, and calling clients when there are cancellations. There is usually one stylist that can accommodate walk-in appointments, but your best bet is to call ahead. read more

What a great little experience. It's my wedding tomorrow and I was in dire need of a haircut. I gave them a call at 10am, and they had near immediate availability (11:45am). I took the streetcar from my hotel in the Warehouse district, and even though I was sweating, the nicely air conditioned salon helped cool me down. Even more, they had me wait in the waiting room where they provided bottles of refrigerated water. Minutes later I was greeted by Ira (Ee-rah) and brought to her station to discuss my hair needs. After that, she led me to the comfy hair washing stations in the back, gave my scalp a good rub down, and then she took me back to her station to get my ears lowered. She was thorough, exacting, and professional. She gave me a great cut, and provided me with a few sample products to use for my big day. I got no pressure to purchase any products, and the haircut cost me an even $30. If you want a salon where the hair stylist is friendly and talks to you about what you want and don't want- don't go here. I've been getting the same haircut for the past 7 years, but very rarely do I go to the same place. Every time I ask for my fairly basic cut though, trim my long layers and my bangs, it works out. My haircut is not BAD. It's just not what I asked for. She cut my hair blunt and when I asked for more layers she exchanged an exasperated look with another stylist. Disclaimer my mom made me this appointment. I've been wanting to get my hair cut but didn't know a place to go. My mom goes to Salon M every other month so I figured it was going to be nice. Parking was extremely hard to find but that's a given with the location. I will say the clientele (at least when I was there) were women 35+ which isn't an issue but being low 20s I felt out of place. I have very thick hair and I know my hair can be a hassle but the lady who too care of me was wonderful! I cut 10inches, layered, and balayage which came out to only $125 for 3 hours worth of work. Salon M is housed in a small cottage on Canal St. It's tastefully decorated. There is an area in the back with bottled water, tea, etc. The shampoo room is very relaxing. My experience has been that it is surprisingly inexpensive. I first went to Salon M to get some very stubborn pink out of my hair. Caroline took care of me. Caroline is very sweet and personable. She got all of the pink out without wrecking my hair, and even though it took forever, she was very patient. She also gave me a trim. I've been back once since, to darken the platinum blonde that I had. Both times I have been very happy with my results as well as with my interactions with staff. As a new NOLA resident, I was lucky to stumble upon Salon M, and more specifically, Ira. Ira was funny (without the seemingly obligatory forced salon-conversation) quick, and went out of her way to show me new tips for managing my crazy thick and curly hair. With a heavy heart I am posting this review. I have kept 2 stars due to Lisa (the owner) having true and deep concern and professionalism. I have trusted Caroline with my blonde hair a few times prior but my last experience at the salon that took 5 hours was unacceptable. I have been blonde for over 7 years and came in wanting a lavender to blonde fade to which my hair was sadly turned completely purple, blue, green and black. (See photo) My main concern with this whole situation was the lack of ownership by the stylist of the mistake made and the seeming lack of communication between staff in regards to the initial remedy of this issue. Even though no charges were made, it came across that there was no sense of urgency for next day repair. Due to Caroline scheduling not until late afternoon, costing me two full days for this mishap. Also having to reschedule my own personal clients and miss work due to the color being so inappropriate for my job made this even worse. I personally contacted Lisa who was extremely professional and very apologetic, understood my choice as to not wanting to return to Salon M. I hope from this situation going forward there can be improvements made and that this never happens to another client again. read more

I thought I would probably get a so-so haircut, have to spend an hour and a half making forced conversation, and probably pay an unreasonably high price for it. I was hugely mistaken! I called them at 10:30 on a Saturday and they were able to schedule me for 1pm. The salon itself was beautiful and clean. I have been to Salon M twice now, and Ira has been my stylist both times. She took the time to consult with me on what I wanted. Well I didn't know exactly what I wanted. I just knew that my hair was in terrible condition (home bleaching incident) and I needed help. No worries, Ira knew exactly what to do. She told me her idea and asked me if I was ok with it. This lady is a master. You can tell she really cares about what she is doing, and wants to give you a phenomenal hair cut. I was visiting my daughter over the holidays and scheduled an appointment Christmas week for a cut and color. I love, love, love my hair. Dorothy and Lori arrived at the Omni hotel right around 8:45 that morning and had everyone (including myself, the bride) finished around 3:30. Everyone looked flawless; Dorothy was able to successfully create everyone's personal hair vision for the day, and Lori's stunning makeup lasted until midnight. I found Salon M when looking for a place close to where I live. Made an appointment and.have been going to Kelly since.then, about 2 years ago. I am a sporadic customer in that I don't get my hair colored or cut as often as many people. But every time I go in Kelly does a great job with cut and color, takes her time to blow dry and flat iron my long curly hair, and I leave with it and am able.to have.it last up.to a week.
