OMG I'm in love I've been in La for almost a year now and haven't been able to find anyone who can blow out or press my hair bone straight like I was able to back home in Tennessee. I was a bit hesitant because my hair is very thick and curly and I'm used to rude and impatient stylists. Anyone who knows me KNOWS i speak ACCURACY. I will tell you the story and then YOU decide for yourselves: Called to schedule appointment and Catalina quoted me $75 (have a witness). She confirmed she'd be my stylist. Mind you this IZ my FIRST Time here. Dominicans are awesome and know how to do some AFRO hair. That said, she never laid ONE finger on my head. Okay fine no biggie. Got a couple of tender sweethearts Lenny, Julissa and Dolinda ( i believe). One washed, the other set rollers and the other blow dried. They all were SUPER gentle with my hair which works well for me cuz i'm tender headed. Great! Now process is complete...Payment time. Catalina has now decided to charge me $120 which caught me by surprise yet i gently approached her about the increase and Catalina claims to not have quoted me (us) the $75. OKay fine. Now this ruins my overall experience cuz i agreed on a number which was NOT honored (even tho she clearly stated it depended on my hair thickness and length NOT my natural texture even tho I clearly stated i was Haitian aka AFRO Hair) and THAT resulted in me feeling a little GYPT. She did Reluctantly attempt to compromise by refunding me $20 cash After charging the $120. OH and the $120 was for my afro hair being in it's natural state, and some conditioner NOT to mention my hair is thin as ALL HEAVENS! Aside from the payment experience I really did like the place and the quality of service they provided. I wish they had used HOLISTIC CHEMICAL FREE PRODUCTS but one can only expect so much. This is my first time at a Dominican salon and it went fairly well. Just be prepared for lots of loud talking right over your head.. I was greeted by Maria, who is quite the ball of energy. I explained to her over the phone that my hair was 100% natural and shoulder length and she quoted me $50. I arrived with my hair freshly washed and combed. She insisted on washing it again even though it was already clean so I asked that she just carry on // like most naturals I have a particular hair regimen and like my hair done a certain way, I ask that whatever stylist I pay to trust with my hair do it the way I want it done // She proceeded to wet my hair and roller set me pretty quickly. After maybe 45 minutes under the dryer, another stylist trimmed my ends (maybe an inch more than she needed to) and blow dried the living hell out of my hair, almost burning my scalp and leaving me nearly incapacitated from all the smoke filling the salon. Next, she did a very THOROUGH flat ironing job, sometimes making up to 8 passes on one section of hair with a flat iron (I felt that was excessive heat and probably pretty damaging - and scalp burning). The end result was pretty (although a little dry on the ends) but I feel their blowout routine may be a little rough on my hair if I continued to go. I was charged $75 instead of $50 in the end - perhaps I misquoted my length or she charged me for the trim (that he knew about.) Hope it isn't that much next time. If you're looking for a new salon though its worth a shot. This salon visit was no more than 2.5 hours on a Saturday - which is pretty good. If I could give them 3.5 stars I would just for moving pretty quickly. read more

I am a tough critic and I really love this place! Yes EVERYONE in there is Dominican! I got my full Harlem/Washington Heights experience in there. They had all the conditioners I'm used to back in NYC and they took me in as a walk in the day before New Years and I didn't have to wait! Same prices like in NY even with my longer hair LOL. Maria blew my hair out and the other girl who dyed and rolled my hair was super sweet! I love that they play reggaeton and are charismatic and funny! My hair came out the way it's supposed to be and of course the next day it got even better! I am happy! Will go back once a month to treat myself and a Dominican vibe! Woo Hoo! read more

I am originally from the Bronx New York and I have been to multiple Dominican salons to get my hair done. I'm letting my girlies know from the east coast don't believe the reviews. The salon charged me $100 for a wash set and a black rinse. Mind you, my hair is shoulder length. I asked why it was so expensive and I was told it was $50 for the wash and set and $50 for the black rinse. I did not have my hair blown out or flat ironed nor did I have a deep conditioner or trim. From the wash bowl to the styling chair they are so patient with your hair! I was literally falling asleep with how patient they took care of doing my hair! The owner is a great stylist but needs help in the salon. I've been here a couple times and she was the only one working with a couple clients waiting to be seen. Today I made an appointment ahead of time and granted i was 15m late but she had just finished washing someone's hair which would've pushed my appointment 30m. I heard her discussing the situation with the client in Spanish and understood, as my background is Dominican but my Spanish isnt very good so I chose not to speak to it but understood everything that was discussed clearly. Maria tried to accommodate me but the other client needed to leave by a certain time in which I did as well. Overall it made me feel rushed/not a priority when I made an appointment which I didn't like so I decided to leave. I don't know if I'll visit this salon again which is a bummer as she's one of the only good Dominican stylists in the area. read more

I noticed a lot of gals who write reviews on Dominican salons seem like they aren't so familiar with how this all works- so my review is on this specific salon and others like it, as well as the mechanics of it all here. First of all, this place (and in my overall opinion) most DS's so far in Cali just aren't getting it 100% and don't even use Dominican products a lot of the time which drives me crazy (and I hate the fact I can only get a DBOwhen traveling) Anyway, there is a method to this and it really shouldn't change in any region- wash, set, dry, blow out and round brush straighten, basically. That's it that's all and you should walk out with the straightest, shiniest and softest hair ever. And you will get this here just know ahead of time if you are accustomed to the East Coast way it may be kind of a shocker and you should bring your own products (esp. if you want a condition and a rinse!). read more

I am from NYC and have been going to Dominican salons for years. I am a huge advocate of the roller set - it is much healthier than blowdrying from wet, and the hair has much more body and shine. I had been searching for a Dominican salon in LA for years and was extremely happy to have found this one, although it is definitely a trek to to to Sun Valley since I live on the Westside! Maria is friendly and knowledgeable about hair. She wont leave you disappointed! I have even trusted her to cut my hair into layers and she did a great job. Definitely worth the travel time for a smooth, sexy blowout! P.S. Make sure you get her to make you a cafe con leche with cinnamon! YUM! read more

Every time I leave that place my hair looks so bomb. I also have not let anybody cut my hair in five years because I have had a dramatic haircutting experience. My ends were dry and she offered the cut. I was scared while she cut when I looked at the end result it was just what I wanted. She cut just enough to take the ends off. I finally can trust in a hairdresser again. The staff is very friendly, very knowledgeable, and listen to what you want. Very happy I found this place. read more

I am definitely a fan! Had my first appointment today, the place is pretty easy to find right on the corner. There is parking (but not much) in the front, you can also park on the street which I did and it was perfectly fine. Maria greeted me with a warm welcome (she gave me a hug which was pretty awesome lol). She asked me what I wanted to have done - I explained I wanted a wash and flat iron; she took a look at my hair and told me it would be a little safer on my hair to try the roller set which was fine by me. (My hair is natural). *Quick tip it says on yelp credit cards are accepted but when I got in Maria informed me it was cash only. There is a liquor store next store with an ATM, a Ralphs/CVS/Bank Of America and Chase across the street in case you need to grab some cash. I paid $60 which for me was around the norm my regular stylist charges $65 for the wash/flat iron only. Maria washed my hair and another young lady washed and rolled it. (Sorry didn't get her name but she was really nice). I was under the dryer roughly 45 minutes or so and then Maria blow dried and flat ironed my hair. She did a great job, very thorough it was a little more heat than I expected and it came out just as straight as when my other stylist does it with the flat iron so overall I was very happy with the end result. It was definitely softer. It did get a little busy so my wait was a little longer than I hope but, overall nothing to drastic and Maria apologized for the extra wait. I've come here a few times, my hair looked "okay." Maria hasn't done it for me yet. But the girl who does insists on putting oil in my hair and keeps saying it's not oil it's "shine." Umm that's the same thing sweetie. So within a day or two I need another wash because the "shine" multiplies. But all that I can deal with, today I'm annoyed because I've been here since 9am (their opening time for today) and it's now 9:33am and I'm sitting outside my car because they haven't arrived yet to open their business. It sucks because I don't want to leave to find another salon because that may take longer than waiting for them. Annoyed is me. read more

Really enjoyed visiting this salon with my mother-in-law. This review is long overdue but well deserved. My mother-in-law (and husband) are from el Republica Dominicana. She was visiting my family here last July for my son's birthday. In the D.R. She gets her hair washed and styled weekly, and more often for special events. I took her here for a wash and style and ended up getting mine done as well. The owner, Maria, is incredibly personable, just like on the island. And let me tell you, you have not had your hair blown out until a Domincan does it! (Rollers, too... MAGIC!) After our hair was done we sat on the couches, talking and drinking great coffee Maria made for us... Just like on the island. Next time my MIL comes to town we are heading straight for this salon to get our wash/styles and conversation over coffee. I would highly recommend this salon to anyone wanting perfection! read more

Catalina was great I told her I wanted a "new look" and bam she gave me exactly that! Great cut and style. She was extremely warm and nice. What part of 1/2 an inch is that difficult of a concept to understand? I've been reading about Dominican salons and their whole process of roller setting then blowing out the roots. And I figured that even with sitting under a dryer for an hour, it would still be less heat than my normal blow dry and flat iron that I get at regular black salons. It started out well enough. I was a little freaked out when the lady shampooed my hair three times! But I wasn't really that worried about it since I rarely shampoo and could probably use the clarifying. The rollers were fine and the blow drying was fine (I had no idea a blow dryer could get that hot though!). It was very annoying when after sitting under a dryer for 45 minutes, I had to wait another hour for her to finish coloring and roller setting the other two ladies who came in. Overall it wasn't a bad experience though until the scissors came out. I should really just learn to walk away sometimes. I should have just told her that I didn't want a trim at all when she lifted up my hair to show me where she wanted to cut. I pulled her fingers back down to the last 1/2 inch of my hair and said that's it. That's all I want cut. We fought about it for a bit and then she said fine, I'll only take off a little bit. The fact that I had to fight with her over it should have warned me. Next thing I know, she cuts the last six inches off. I was devastated. My longest hairs were just brushing my hips. Now my hair is about an inch past bra strap. And I was even more upset when I had to physically hold her back from cutting bangs into the front of my hair. I only got her to stop when I told her I don't wear my hair straight very often. I have no use for bangs. And to add insult to injury, she originally said the price was $65 (for the shampoo, deep condition, blow dry and cut). When I only pulled out $80 and was waiting for change, she said she made a mistake and it was $70. She took my $80 and walked away before I could repeat my request for change. And I was too upset to start following her back across the salon to demand my change. So even with an appointment, I got there at 9:30 and I wasn't able to walk out until 1:30. 4 hours of my Saturday gone for an okay blowdry (the front is still curly) and a trim that not only was significantly more than I wanted, it also appears to have been done with dull scissors because the entire length that she cut now has split ends 2 days later. Don't walk away from this salon. Run. read more

I just went to another salon and I see that María has completely heat damaged my hair. If you care about your hair do not come here. Thanks to her I can't wear my hair curly anymore until the heat damaged ends grow out and I eventually get it cut off. I'm sooooooo angry right now! I can't understand why she would do this to me. Especially after I told her to not apply so much heat to my hair. It's like she did this on purpose. I asked her not to do this and she insisted on going over my hair multiple times with the blow dryer and flat iron. A lot of people like this salon so I decided to try it out because it's close to my house...uhhh its not like i thought it would be. I'm from NYC so I have been getting a wash set and blow dry for the longest. I felt that the lady (not Maria) who was washing my hair was taking way to long and didnt seem confident in how she handled Afro Caribbean hair. it took about 20 mins for her to wash my hair & 15 min for the roller NOT GOOD. Maria was a very nice lady full of energy which is goood, but she is kinda bossy with how she wants YOUR hair to be done...thats where we clashed! I like my hhair to be blowed dried a simple yet specific way (that she did not agree with). I feel that if I spend my money there....I will tell u how I want my hair and you will agree with me no matter if u think another way is better! I kno she was jus trying to help, but please fall back. Like I said...I been getting it done this way for a long time, so I've just developed my own way. At the end...my hair came out the way I wanted it only thing that really turned me sour about this shop was the prices. $50-55 hard earned dollars wasted to get my hair straightened (which should have cost $35-40 after all its not like the salon is located in a prime location)...SO NOT WORTH IT. More power to you if u like this shop, but I'd rather do my hair at home for free or go to a black hair salon and get a press n curl that last longer than a blow dry.
