Wow-- this salon just keeps getting better and better-- NOT. The owner, Jean (The woman who botched my hair)-- emailed me on 3/13 saying that she was going to give me a full refund for my hair as soon as she got into the salon the following day(Which I'm almost 100% certain was prompted by the negative yelp review). Of course she didn't. She then lobbied Yelp to remove the photo of my hair-- which she clearly was NOT proud of. This place has very poor business ethics, and if Jean is any reflection of the quality of work you can expect to see at this salon, I'd really think more than just twice before I rolled the dice on this place! I'm still wearing this awful haircut, with white streaks sporadically placed across my hairline. I'll be posting some new photos soon-- before this weekend when I have to go get my hair fixed by a professional. *Update-- have a look at the photos-- you'd want to have photos of that kind of work removed too- And for those of you who followers who've been asking me why I even paid; a couple reasons-- I knew my hair was super short and I was upset about the awful cut, but she had round-brush blow dried my hair so it was partially curled under. I didn't get to see my gnarly cut in its full fledged, hacked up glory until I washed it... I have stick straight hair, so when it dried-- believe me I was BEYOND peeved!! So, needless to say I've been either curling my hair into a wavy beachy-do, or wearing it up... every day. Straight is clearly not a viable option. read more

I picked this salon on a whim plus a last-minute-on-a-sunday prayer. Sandra took my appointment at the new location (Salon Republic on 2nd st). She listened intently to my needs and then nailed the cut - she used restraint and asked questions to make sure we were on the same page. Not only am I stoked about the results but I found a new stylist with a really chill and low-key salon. Added bonus: she uses my favorite shampoo/condish by Kevin Murphy. This review is for Lindsey.. I've never used any of D5's other services or stylists, but I can't say enough good things about Lindsey. She is a lovely person,a fantastic stylist, and always makes me feel at ease. I find the best way to go is show her a photo of what I want, ask her opinion, talk it over, and let her get to it. I always come out with a style that I love, and that is flattering. She is an artist, and that is always reflected in her work. In my case, she seems particularly adept at going from super long hair to short bobs (asymmetrical and regular). I get tons of compliments on my hair every time I get it cut. I admit that I am lazy when it comes to my hair, so a good cut that doesn't take an hour to style is a must-have. She gives me asymmetrical bobs that take me 15-20 minutes to style (dryer and straightener!). The first time I went to her, I kept my hair long but asked for some fun layers, and it looked great. The second time I went, my hair was down to my waist and my goal was to donate it. As anyone going from super long to super short hair knows, it is a tough adjustment, and having someone who can make you feel comfortable is integral to having a good experience. I'm a penny pincher, I have waited for hours at Vidal Sassoon Academy for a $20 cut. This time was serious, I was going from shoulder length hair to a graduated bob. I needed a Pro. After researching Yelp at length, I stumbled upon D5. The reviews were amazing and their 50% off for first time clients made my wallet woozy. I was assigned Lindsey and told, "she loves to give this cut". Really? Well, whether she loves to give this cut or not, she's a master at the bob. I love my new hair! By far my best experience EVER getting my brows tinted! Aoife is awesome! I have red hair and naturally blonde eyebrows. She makes them as dark as I like them to be, without making me feel like I'm taking up too much of her time. She also gives them the perfect shade of brown/red. I have literally never been so happy with my hair. Kyung cut my hair and it was simple but cute. I am never happy with haircuts; I always say to keep it as long as possible, but cut off the dead ends. Everyone always screws it up; either cuts off too much, or doesn't cut off enough. But Kyung cut off all the dead ends so it is nice and healthy, but still kept as much length as possible. She added some simple layers, and did a nice blowout. The salon is small but clean and cute and everyone that works there seems nice. I really, really like it here. They have a 50% off discount for your first time here. I'm not excited about spending full price next time I go there just because I am stingy, but I will admit that it is worth it for my most favorite haircut ever. read more

Not a 1 trick pony... Dana was so awesome with my Brazilian wax; I had to check out her facial. Let me begin by saying: I've patronized enough salons/estheticians by now to recognize their MO in 5 minutes. Either they focus all their time and energy trying to sell a bunch of products to you, convince you why you should come every week, how terrible your skin is, regime is, strong-arm tactics to squeeze every possible dollar from you. Dazzle me now & you'll have a loyal client.....Or they couldn't care less....about anything, including doing a decent job. Needless to say, so lucky I found Dana Jensen: a true professional-in every possible way, she takes pride in her work, provides outstanding services, listens, is pleasant & friendly knows what the hell she's doing (& doing well), she feels like your best friend, focused entirely on you. Dana is amazing! She carefully examined then gave me the most thorough consultation I've ever experienced. She talked with me about my skin, my concerns, and then created a customized facial based on MY needs, not what came squirting out of some tube. The whole experience was phenomenal, relaxing, she knew when to converse & when not to, everything is always clean/sterilized appropriately she's always super nice & pleasant. Best of all, the results were both immediate and long lasting. She educates me on the natural products she's using, and while she makes them available, there wasn't pressure to buy every possible thing, like some new cult religion. After reviewing the stellar reviews on Yelp I decided to give it a try. Fiona did a wonderful job with my hair - both the cut and style were great. I went in for my appointment to get some color done. I've had a few botched jobs recently in other places. Nothing too bad. I am a HUGE fan of Salon D5 and tell everyone I know that they MUST schedule a facial with Aoife (Effa)!! I promise you, it will be one of the best facials you have ever had in your life. I know that's a big promise, but I am willing to put it out there. :) 1. She had a comfy, fleecy warming blanket that was Heaven on a bed 2. I got the massage and Hot Stone add-on and if you've never had hot stones- you really have to treat yourself to this- it takes you to another place.... 3. She has great products from Dermalogica. They sell them there too so you might want to pick up some tinted moisturizer and the lip renewal (best lip balm I have ever had and I am saying this as a Sephora addict who has lots of lip gloss experience...). 4. Aoife also does phenomenal eyebrow waxes. I'm not sure why other estheticians have not thought of this, but she uses smaller strips and so the wax is virtually painless. She takes her time so she will shape and tweeze your brows to perfection- no stragglers! No worries about leaving with pencil thin eyebrows or your eyebrows looking lopsided in a way that your facial expressions look awkward until they grow back. After calling and speaking with the owner, she gave the address to another location where we proceeded to go only to find out yet again, this hair salon wasn't where she mentioned. FACIALS AT D5! I just got my first facial at D5 from AOIFE(pronounced eefa)!!!! She is amazing!!!! While she waited for my peel to do it's job she massaged my arms and shoulders with hot rocks! This review is long overdue... The fabulous Jean Connolly has been my stylist for about 10 years. Of course I followed her when she opened her beautiful salon in Santa Monica (so proud of her!). Jean is wonderful. I trust her 100%. She's friendly and honest, but won't talk your ear off or just tell you what you want to hear. I moved from the Westside to Woodland Hills last year and continue to fight the traffic to get to Salon D5. I won't go anywhere else. When I started seeing Jean, I had long hair, halfway down my back. For as long as I can remember, I wanted a pixie cut (a la Mia Farrow in Rosemary's Baby), but was TERRIFIED to do it. I went in to get a bob cut and told Jean about wanting the pixie cut. She told me that when I'm ready for it, she would be happy to give me the cut because I can pull it off. She said that she's actually talked some people out of getting a pixie cut because they wouldn't be able to wear it well based on face/head shape, etc. I finally got the cut about 7 years ago and love it! I've had the cut ever since. I have also seen Aoife on several occassions for a few different facials and eyebrow waxing. She is so sweet and does an incredible job - I highly recommend her. I just wish my finances allowed for me to get a facial more often! (As a side note, I feel compelled to defend Jean when I read 'Laney B's reviews. This is a situation where you need to consider the source and look at all of her other reviews. Why so many 1-star reviews? I find Yelp to be a very helpful resource in many ways, but people like Laney can be the downfall of someone's business. The pictures that she posted (which I believe were removed by Yelp, since they were found to be a misrepresentation) of the 'botched' haircut supposedly done by Jean were not pics of the cut Jean gave her. Also, the offer given to new clients is made very clear not only on the phone when booking the appointment, but also by the stylist when you first sit down - it is 50% off of 1 service, so if you get a haircut and highlights, it is 50% off one of the services, not both. I feel sorry for Laney. Going through life trying to get things for free and leaving miserable feedback on Yelp must be exhausting.) Thank you Jean, Aoife & all the ladies at Salon D5. This review is for Lindsey only. I went in for a trim, and I'm glad I did only a trim and not a full haircut. She "listened" as in she repeated everything I asked for, but she proceeded to take it to a whole another direction. She wa sloppy too. I had a pony tail so there was a kink in my hair, she didn't even bother wetting my hair or smooth it out before she cut it, and it was about 3 inches shorter than what she said it was going to be. I was in shock. But she was rushing me because she had another client waiting. I didn't realize until I went home that it was a jagged and blunt, and the two sides weren't even the same length! I could have done a better job myself! So I went back in for a refund because I wasn't going to risk anyone from there touching my hair again, it would have only been shorter, wouldn't it? Lindsey just shrugged and said, "sorry, i was confused." I don't know what it there to be confused about when you repeated my explict instruction. At least she gave me my money back, but I have to live with this haircut that looks like it was chewed out by a dog for months? I can't even get it fixed at another salon because it was too short! I do have to say, both of her clients when I was in there seem to be on the older side, so if you want a modern looking (heck, a haircut that's even), don't go to her. read more

Love this salon! This was my first visit and I will definitely be back. The salon has a relaxing atmosphere and friendly staff. I started with a fabulous facial with Margaret. She used a Clarisonic skin brush during the treatment and I made sure to buy one before I left. Then I met with Jean who saved me from my home coloring nightmare. She is great at listening and really knows hair. We also had the best conversation which made the time just fly by. I go to Salon D5 for my brows and haircuts. I went to Aoife for my eyebrow waxes before she even worked here, and she is amazing. She definitely understands that each face type/personal style has its own brow style to go with it. Additionally, she completely puts me at ease every time I'm there and it's a lovely experience. I was happy when she moved to this salon, because now Jean cuts my hair as well. It's my favorite haircut since I've been in LA, and I won't go to anyone else now. I feel like she knows how to frame my face perfectly. I have such a great time whenever I go in for a service. The staff is extremely friendly and fun. After months and months of hearing rave reviews from one of my friends about this salon, I finally booked my appointment. One with Jean (for cut & color) & one with Lindsey (for wedding hair). My consultation with Lindsey was great. She was easy to talk to and seemed to have a real sense for what I was looking for in the up-do for my wedding. Next I sat with Jean for my cut and color. Usually stylists don't know what to do with my incredibly thick and semi-wavy hair, but Jean managed to tame my mop in no time. The cut was amazing and my color looks great. I had the hardest time finding someone who knows how to cut a feminine pixie cut. Many times , I have gone to other salons leaving with a mans haircut instead of a pixie. Finally, I have found someone that knows how to make short hair look feminine and pretty! I came to Sandra today with a grown out buzz cut (thats how bad my last haircut was... they used mens clippers on me! ). Sandra somehow turned it into a cute textured style that can be worn more than one way. I will also add that I have asian hair that is thick and sticks out if not cut right. I just went in their new expanded space on Saturday and it's fantastic. Very light and spacious and overall an extremely relaxing vibe. Jean Connelly has been cutting my hair since I moved to LA in 2007. Love her and the entire staff - it feels more like visiting friends than just getting to an appointment. Beyond that it's a great haircut at a very reasonable price - I've been told by many stylists I have a pretty unruly head of hair but Jean never seems to have any trouble. Ive been on a quest to find a new stylist and I think Ive found her. Jean at Salon D5 is a down to earth business owner and stylist who understand what a customer needs. She pays great attention to detail without taking too much time. I got a great haircut at an awesome price with service. Its much better than Studio DNA or a Juan Juan where your stylist tries to multi task by doing your haircut and someone else's hair color at the same time.
