History

Established in 2020.

Salon@Church opened September 8, 2020, after founders Laurie and James purchased and restored a historic church building in Welland. It started with a gut decision: Laurie saw the “for sale” sign, they booked a showing immediately, and once inside—tin ceiling overhead—they knew it was the space to build something of their own. When they took possession in January 2020, it wasn’t a salon yet (it had been converted into an apartment). They removed what didn’t belong, preserved the character (including stained glass and original details), and rebuilt it into a calm, modern studio rooted in standards. Then 2020 changed everything. With shifting timelines and uncertainty, they opened anyway—and that season shaped the brand: consultation-first, maintenance-based, and results-driven. Today, Salon@Church is known across the Niagara Region for luxury hair and skin services delivered with structure and care—plus a liquor licence and a private Bridal Suite for elevated wedding mornings.

Meet the Business Owner: Laurie O.

I opened Salon@Church because I wanted a different kind of salon experience in Welland—one rooted in standards, calm, and long-term results. Too many clients are stuck in “fix it today” appointments, inconsistent outcomes, and decision fatigue. I built a consultation-first studio where hair and skin are planned like an investment, not a one-off. I also wanted a home for career-focused stylists. A place where mentorship is normal, education is built into the culture, and the standard stays consistent—without chaos, shortcuts, or mixed expectations. When the church building behind my home came up for sale, I couldn’t ignore it. The moment we walked in, I saw the potential to restore something meaningful to the community and create a space where people feel taken care of the second they arrive.
