The test itself is actual hell, which isn't the doctor's fault, but it's important to be mentally prepared. They basically prick you about twenty times, and it feels like being bitten by an army of the angriest mosquitoes on the planet. Then you have to sit there for fifteen minutes and. Not. Scratch. Once they come in and measure the size of your reaction areas, they'll spray you with something that takes the itch away pretty quickly. They will explain which allergens you reacted to - in my case, nothing that gave me the simple answer I was hoping for, but again, not their fault. The verdict was that I probably fall into the unlucky category of people who just get hives for no known reason, or it's from a thyroid issue I have that multiple endocrinologists have told me is too insignificant to medicate for. I was provided with a very lengthy packet of information and a list of instructions for managing the hives. I am taking one star away for the instructions because after waking up at 5am and a long day at work, trying to decipher these and turn them into actionable steps felt like solving a problem on the LSAT. I'm a reasonably intelligent person, and I literally had to take a piece of paper and draw a tree diagram to figure out the things I should do and in what order. I'll come back if I need to, but not before calling with several questions about my tree diagram, I'm sure. *** Updated: taking another star away because the doctor never called back to answer a question I had.

Celinda especially makes one feel like she's doing them a favor by answering basic questions. Sometimes I just look at her and wait for her to explain her curtness or apologize for her unwillingness to be more helpful. Her bedside manner is as comforting as a cactus which is troubling because I've been coming here for almost two years and I feel like it is in spite of her attitude. I asked her today if Allergy Partners took Tri-Care. She said we used to. When I asked her to elaborate, she merely said in her annoyed tone "it's just like I said, we used to." I had to try to pull it out of her if this might change in the future. As I sit her and listen to the way she talks to people it boggles my mind why this is tolerated. "The card reader is there...the pens are over there... I'm going to talk over you....I'm going to look at you like you're and idiot....go sit down until I call you.... ask me in ten minutes.... I don't have time for you right now.....no, I'm on the phone... you'll just have to keep calling back until we change that...."

TO BE A SMARTER PATIENT: (insurance 101, ignore me if you already know this stuff. I'm still learning...) Pay attention to the section where it asks about a deductible. If you have a high deductible plan or have not met your deductible for the year, you will likely pay more than just the copay amount. Example -- the cost for the percutaneous test (eg the scratch test with different potential allergens on your skin) - I did the food one, actually costs $720. If you have a deductible of $1000 on your plan and you haven't had any health visits that you paid toward the deductible yet... you could very well end up paying $720 to get this scratch test. I've asked the office to modify the deductible section - right now my form says N/A after deductible. This led me to believe that my insurance covered scratch tests and it wouldn't require my deductible first. I've asked the office to add another response to that question for the office tech to circle "unknown." Because the office stated that if the insurance doesn't provide the information, they might circle n/a. Unknown is a better indicator to the patient that the clinic has attempted to get the information, but was unable to. In which case as a patient, there's more of a chance that I'll get a big bill later. To the office: I do appreciate the attempt at transparency via this form. But I stand by the fact that I felt very pressured to take the test, citing that appointments are hard to get, and that I'm almost certainly not going to have to pay more than the copay. My other feedback is to be clear about the office's inability to accurately predict costs for the tests, because insurance is a confusing piece of sh!t. Don't tell patients that they don't have to pay, if you are unsure.

It's rare that I walk out of a doctor's office wanting to tell everyone how great my experience is, but that's exactly how I felt! I immediately had a positive impression when I walked in while on a work phone call and the staff told me to take my time with my call. As I filled out forms, I was surprised to get a form that actually told me what my insurance covered - the amount of my deductible, the amount I had already met, and what percentage was covered for allergy testing/allergy shots (with CPT codes too). When I asked the cost for each allergy test prick, I was floored when she could actually tell me the cost - $12 a prick or $600 for all 75 pricks. I can't tell you how many times I've walked into a doctor's office and no one knew the cost of procedures or the CPT codes for the procedure. I couldn't believe it when Dr. Rosenthal spent around 30 minutes with me, in an era when most doctors are limited to 10 minutes per patient. He asked me about my allergy history and tailored his plan to what I said. When I said I didn't want to do allergy shots, he was willing to try an alternative to see if that would treat my problems. When I said I didn't want to pay $600 for all 75 allergy tests, he decided to limit the allergy tests to the ones with the most actionable plan for prevention. On top of all that, Dr. Rosenthal is older, so he's got a wealth of knowledge from first hand experience with patients. For example, he had heard of my very crazy MSG allergy and took the time to teach me how MSG affects the nervous system. He knows which allergy medicines tend to work better for most patients. I really can't say enough good things about Dr. Rosenthal and will recommend him to everyone who mentions allergies to me!

The modules program that each participant follows is full of videos and impactful information to guide each person on their health journey. What attracted me to this practice initially, was how unique it was from others I was considering. I am referring to brain re-training. This is a critical piece to healing and often overlooked. Having been given the tools, I practice my mind re-training, breathing and gratitude every day. Family members I visited while on the program mentioned to me how much calmer I am now. My hair is growing in and my dry eyes, while not yet healed, are less painful when I waken in the morning. All team providers are readily accessible between scheduled appointments and were all prompt for scheduled meetings with me. A shout out to Joy (office support). She got those supplements/remedies to me very promptly and e-mails initially explaining the program and who to contact were thorough and left nothing to question. I would be neglectful not mentioning health coaches Kourtney and Halicia. Yes, an assigned, health coach!! This was another amazing benefit. Kourtney was kind, professional, and helpful in my decision regarding program appropriateness through my scheduled discovery call. Halicia, my assigned program Health Coach, provided regular support calls answering endless questions. Thank you so much Halicia! (and Kourtney too). By the way, Alicia, The Total Gym is now out of the closet [since purchased in the 90s) and being used for weight training. All three Naturopaths who I met with regularly, evaluated and carefully considered my progress and made changes as needed. Healing takes time and Dr. Johnson told me on my 1st visit that brain re-training would be a major part of my healing. I feel grateful for the care and tools provided to me to continue my wellness journey. There are no nickel and diming surprises. The price I paid was an all-inclusive amazing value. and exceeded my expectations.
