    Tent waiting room
    Susan H.

The Emergency- still in a tent ! It is not Covid. Blocking the curb for dropping off patients and parking is unacceptable. Telling me that is for the ambulances to regroup and I see them setting up in the driveway after their drop off and regrouping while the security guard is reading a book! The patient/family experience is like in a war zone. And, now the is a security checkpoint to enter the building. It is not friendly-no more "Neighbors Who Care" the security guard looked in my purse my tote bag. This is to make me feel safe and make gang members not bring guns and knifes into the hospital. The question is what if they show up with the guns and the knifes on them? Then what? Are the security guards trained to handle that kind of conflict? And what about the people in the waiting room? I hope this was a good idea. I have been in a lot of hospitals around the world and this is the first time I have ever seen this done. Take the cones off the Salinas City streets. Sam Downing never would have let this happen to the hospital. So sad.

First she yelled at me for not filling out the form correctly (not true) and for not letting them know I had a failed attempt previously because I had metal in my toe, which I let everyone know, even her, before we started. She yelled why did they send me down here with the form not correctly filled out. Not true. I tried to explain to her that yes it was filled out correctly and I indicated the metal ( under where wire is indicated in the questions) She kept arguing with me and telling me no you didnt! She said I didn't mark it off, that it was not checked off pointing at the form saying you marked all no's. Not true. I didn't have my glasses on so it was hard for me to see . I told her it was checked off as a yes and asked to see the form. I pointed it out where I indicated the metal to her and all she said was oh, no apologies nothing. Then grabbed the paper out of my hand. She was so rude! Then they had the MRI machine setup for the wrong foot, I had to tell her that. She proceeded to squeeze my injured foot pretty hard I yelled out that that hurts to please stop, no , continued squeezing my foot into the plastic guide. After the procedure Mary, her assistant couldn't figure out how to get me out of the machine. I had to point out which button to push to let the table move back. Shuema came from behind me and yanked out my ear plug, with no warming, which hurt and scared me. I told her to stop and removed the other one my self. I am was so mad I filed a report! I broke down crying when I got back to my room. My anxiety was through the roof! I wanted her reprimanded for her very unprofessional conduct. But I'll never know what happened. A patient advocate came to talk with me and go over my report. She told me it's hospital policy to do an in-house investigation of the complaint, which remains private.

We didn't know much about Natividad Hospital, but what we had heard about was not good. She has Medicare, and because she has had some health issues over the years, we purchased the best Medicare Supplement available and can go to any hospital we want. But because we live closer to Natividad, the firemen told us that they had to take her to Natividad. At the time, we didn't know how serious her injury from her fall was, but she was definitely in a lot of pain and knew she needed to go to a hospital. I went to the ER to see her that night. They were still taking X-rays, etc. to determine what was wrong. When I left after about an hour and a half, I still didn't know what her injury was. I went back in the morning and was informed that she had broken her hip, and they would be having surgery that afternoon. When I left the hospital, I didn't know what was going to be done. My wife has had four back surgeries over the years all performed by Dr. Gus Halamandaris. We didn't pick his name out of a hat to have him do the initial surgery on her back. It was based on recommendations we had received on him and after meeting with him to discuss the surgery he was going to perform on her. This was not the case at Natividad. And because this was an emergency, there was not time for us to go shopping for a surgeon, and we understand that. Had it been a surgery because of a degenerative nature, and had time, we certainly would have and had the surgery performed and chosen a different hospital to have it done. I didn't even know the name of the surgeon who would be performing the surgery on my wife, much less what was going to be done. She was scheduled to go into surgery at 2 pm. I called at 5:30 and was told that her surgery had been delayed and that she had just gone into to surgery. I called again at 8:30 to see if she was out of surgery and was told that she was still in surgery and I was assured that I would get a call when she was out of surgery. I never got that call. I finally called again at 9:30 and was told she was out of surgery and would be transferred to a room. After each of the four surgeries Dr. Halmandaris performed on my wife, he would come and see me if I was at the hospital or call me at home to let me know how the surgery went. When I left the hospital the following day, I still didn't even know her surgeons' name or exactly what had been done. It wasn't until two days later that we were told by a nurse that she had a partial hip replacement. After a short stay in the hospital, my wife was transferred to the Sam Karas Acute Rehab Center, which is on the same site as the hospital. But that is a separate story. After she was released from the Rehab Center, we had to return to the hospital to meet with her surgeon for a follow up. We were told to be there by 9:15, which we were. We didn't meet with her surgeon until almost 3 hours later. After he went over her operation, he said he wanted us to return in about a month for another checkup. I told him that we wouldn't be returning and that we would go to another orthopedic surgeon who has in private practice for any future follow ups. There is no way we were going to spend 3 hours waiting to see a doctor we had an appointment with; plus the distance we had to traverse from the parking lot to where we had to go to me with him. He told us that we didn't have to do that and we could just go to our family doctor for any follow ups. As far as her stay in the hospital, we were relatively satisfied with it other than the food is absolutely horrible. Fortunately, she didn't have much of an appetite. I have been a strong proponent of universal healthcare because I believe it should be a right to have access to have medical care. However, if this an example of what universal healthcare looks like, I may have to reevaluate that opinion. It should be better than this.

Soon after our arrival in town my boyfriend was having excruciating jaw pain. It must've been bad for him to want to see a doctor so I Yelped an urgent care. This place was open, close by and most important had good reviews. It was closing in 30 minutes tho, but if we didn't go, bf would be miserable all weekend to see these races. We walked in, place was empty lucky for us, no appointment. Couple of waivers filled out, insurance given and Doctor took us in. Dr. Gilliam is by far the kind of doctor I wish I had as my PCP. He's funny, caring, gentle and educational. After asking my bf some questions and a little exam, it was concluded he had a little infection that needed antibiotics. Dr. Gilliam took care of ALL of it, sent the scripts to Safeway right next door (we needed to get snacks anyway) filled out the claim and sent it to insurance. I mentioned I was a medical coder. He does all of his own coding using software. But if Dr. Gilliam ever wants to hire a certified outpatient coder/biller with Urgent Care experience, we could always use an excuse to relocate to Monterey (hint hint) We were treated like humans, even laughed a little bit at some funny stories. Warm, kind Doctor. I hope we'd never have to be patients again but if we're in Monterey and need an Urgent Care, we're going here. He's the way all Doctors should be.
