As a freshman student (part of the class of 2024) I've been attending this amazing and beautiful university for almost 7 months at this point, and I can honestly say I love it here! The food is good, I've made plenty of good friends, and almost everything that I need (like shopping, food, essentials) is within walking distance for someone like me who isn't yet a car owner! The education I've received so far has been pretty exceptional considering my first year of college has been amongst the global COVID-19 pandemic, but the classes are awesome so far and I can't wait to see what my next three years at this school look like! So far, my only complaint is the confusion of the campus-bus service, known as the Viking Shuttle, and it's kinda unreliable schedule and clarity of routes and destinations. I'm never quite sure which bus I'm on, and where the stops are, since the bus drivers seem to be operating on a different schedule than what's on the website. In lieu of that, I would like to say that I knew this school was the right fit for me the second I first arrived on campus in the fall of 2019 for my campus tour! Also, there's a convenience store right beside my dorm hall that's perfect for buying groceries, lottery tickets, and more! read more

Salem state is a good option if you plan on not living on campus and taking mostly online classes. The majority of professors are okay but the school it's self and the people who go here lowkey suck. I was placed in peabody hall this year with no notice that there would be construction directly outside of my dorm for the ENTIRE year. As someone who works full time and usually until 12 am, getting woken up EVERY morning by drilling and beeping sucked. When I contacted housing and the RD of my building about moving dorms I was ghosted. I've gotten food poisoning from the dining hall over 4 times. Everytime I've stepped foot into marsh dining hall, there's been mice. The students here are inconsiderate and if you get asked to do a group project, be prepared to do the bulk of it. Faculty doesn't reach out and help with career guidance upon gradation- you get to figure it all out on your own! If you are just looking for a degree and no community or a miserable college experience Salem State is the place for you! read more

Dont go here if you're looking for single housing. Disabilities will approve you, just for you to find out less than a month to your move in date that they have no single housing left. They have sucked at communicating and I have had to contact them multiple times to even find out that I had gotten approved in the first place. read more

If you come to Salem and meet someone Arabic, try saying Salem Alaikum. It might work. If they say Alaikum Salem, it worked. Sleepy little modern-looking University in the heart of Salem Oregon not too far from the tourist area - probably about half a mile to the South East of all the witchy crap. It's also only about half a mile from the beach which makes it a great location for students and yet not a really fashionable University to attend. It's a nice campus but it's a little quiet for college life unless that's your thing. Would get 4 stars but they lose a star for the high tuition. Who is pocketing all that. read more

Money-hungry university. Does not care about student welfare whatsoever. The dorm buildings are in desperate need of repair/upgrades and many are infested with roaches/mice. Half the washers/dryers in the ATL building don't even work. Not to mention the campus itself is quite inaccessible for students who use a wheelchair. Salem State has done NOTHING to help change any of this. Oh, and how could I forget the moldy furniture! I am blown away by their administration shortcomings. As a MassTransfer student they have made many errors and I have taken countless hours trying to work with them to straighten them out. When I have gone to talk to admin they have literally shrugged their shoulders at me. I had heard bad reviews about Salem State from many people but chose to form my own opinion. I have dropped 2 out of 4 classes and plan on leaving this school asap, cutting my losses and moving on to a new school. Don't do this to yourself. I graduate with a bachelors in graphic Design, a degree in dance and kumlawdi. I agree with Jackie B. I had no help from getting a job. I was actually doing some freelance graph design for AIDS in Africa. and I thought I would go back and see with my professors thought of my work and see if they had any ideas. Their answer " if you are getting paid for this you would be my competition." half the courses I took had no meaning into getting a job or my main bachelor graph design. Most of the professors acted like teaching wasn't as important as their own artwork. At the end the year the teachers put out an exhibit of their artwork. One of the professors painted a child portrait with dots in the background. like something you would see at a Hallmark card. I want to know where they got their degrees to become teachers. My favorite class what's the sculpture class. The teacher was motivating and allway willing to say late to talk and help his pupils. Right now I am working in healthcare, nothing to do with graphics. When I donate money, its goes to the dance department. For anybody going in the arts, I would recommend going to Mass Art. read more

Salem State sucks! No seriously, it has to be one of the worst colleges in the area. Want to graduate in four years? Good luck. The red tape here makes it practically impossible. I need two classes to graduate, but since they canceled one of them two days before the class was scheduled to start, who knows when that will actually happen. They just want your money, they don't care the least bit about your education or happiness. STAY AWAY! OK, OK, ease up! Salem State is a fine college. I am currently attending as a graduate student and having attended Fitchburg State College and having various friends who have attended various institutions I can guarantee that some of the things Salem is being penalized for by other yelpers is just your run-of-the-mill college complaints. Parking sucks on most college campuses. Secondly, registering for courses and actually being able to take said courses can be a problem at many schools (and believe me I understand this is frustrating). These things do happen and I realize it is sucky. My experience has been fine thus far. I've always had my questions answered in a reasonably prompt manner. My professors have all been understanding and accommodating and extremely well-versed in the subject that they were teaching (except for one). Perhaps the grad school is different in some aspects from the undergrad, but Salem State is not a bad school and I've gotten quite an education thus far. So four stars for the professors in the MSW program!! read more

While I nave no basis of comparison, I do like Salem State. I'm graduating this year and have had a pretty good experience. The classes are mostly at a fair level, though some are too hard and some too easy. The professors are mostly very nice and knowledgeable. The problem with the school is mainly the administration. Many people run into problems that they should not have just because the system hasn't been organized very well.. Of course there are way around this! Once you learn the ropes you don't have much of a problem with a parking spot. Find a person who's leaving and follow them to their car.. There's your space! all colleges have this problem. As for registration, it can be a huge issue and usually is.. But if you plan everything in advanced and talk to professors and advisers you will get into the classes you need. I gave SSC 3 stars because I do like the school, but I couldn't give it 4 or 5 since I am sure there are many schools which are better. Of course most people wouldn't seek to go into a state school if they could get into a better one. For it's purpose, Salem State is a good college. Student's learn a lot if they choose to do so. read more

I like *how close it is to where I live *that they offer online classes *they offer a decent amount of night classes *Meier Hall has a Dunks in it *the majority of of professors have been helpful and understanding of whatever issues (if any) I was having. I do not like *how they didn't accept all my class credits from NSCC. *how much books are (general college complaint) *how you have such a short window to drop classes with a refund *how I have to wake up bright and early on day of registration and anxiously try to get into the classes I need. As a grad student I'll say 2 things about Salem State (at least the History program) The professors by and large rock - people like Brad Austin, Dane Morrison, Liz Duclos-Orsillo, Tad Baker and others are helpful, want to see you succeed and build personal relationships - and if you take the right classes you learn as well The beauracracy does not rock - there is a lot of red tape, especially with filling in required classes that only pop up once a year, and the facilities are third rate. Good school, super convenient with a vast array of classes that fit into my daily work and family life. That's about it. With the exception of some excellent staff member's, this school consists of a lot of self centered staff who cares little about what your interest are, but focus on theirs. This a COMMUTER SCHOOL, yet they are trying to establish this focus primarily on dorm students. The advising system is horrendous. Not all, but most Advisors don't like advising nor do they want to advise. You have to see a "peer mentor" prior to registering for classes, first of all we are not babies please treat us like grown adults. Who by the way do the job of the advisors. They advisors will spend two minutes with you and send you on your way, unless you are one of their "favorites". Facilities are great if you are a Business Major, otherwise prepare for the most depressing four years of your life. Sorry. This isn't Harvard or Yale, we are here because it's affordable so don't expect too much. Make the best of it. Otherwise, I've had a rather pleasant experience here. My husband goes to this school and I helped him get into it. I honestly thought it was a good school. I have never attended a state college before. But now I know why. He complains he cannot sign-in to schedule for tutoring and the IT department does nothing to help him on this. He works all the time and they expect him to call the tutoring department while he's in the lab and play phone tag just to schedule tutoring. He has General Chemistry every Saturday from 9am-2pm. He's in class right now which is February 9th 2019 with this awful Chem professor. She has the students teach themselves. They get their and she puts them in groups and she tosses worksheets at them??? But she hasn't taught them how to do them yet. She sits at her desk while they struggle how to do it. She tells them they cannot use their book. They all sneak and use their book, how else will they get the answers. Then she throws a movie on about atoms or something rather. Then they go straight to the Lab???? No breaks. It's a 5-hour class!!!!! Students cannot focus that long!!! Again she puts them in groups!!!!! When does she teach!!!!! She goes over the time and there's no breaks! My husband has other commitments. If the class ends at 2pm, then it ends at 2pm! She also has marked days where it says class only, no lab day! She told them on those days they can leave at 11:30am. On those days.....nope, she kept them the entire day??? Doing group work??? He had already scheduled another commitment thinking he was getting out early. I told him he should of just left. She has days that are scheduled no Chem at all. I wonder if she will call them all in??? She is a fruitcake!!! With no experience of teaching! I think she should be checked out by the board. I got into Salem state through the mass transfer program in the fall of 2019. That being said it was one of the least enjoyable experiences I've had for the past two years at Salem State. First off they will not except all my credits from my community college which completely defeats the point of the mass transfer program. The advisers do not advise you, in the past year my advisor has not reached out to me once's to see how I was doing during this awful year in the pandemic. The education system at Salem State is awful they are not helpful all they want is your money. The housing at Salem State is disgusting Bates had roaches black mold and just downright disgusting housing conditions. The food is absolutely disgusting and undercooked there is no variety of food for someone that is vegetarian or vegan. I would starve myself many days because I just did not want to eat the disgusting food. When I would eat I would be throwing up all night. If you're looking to go to Salem state I highly recommend to choose any other state school than Salem State. read more

Have just completed an online course where the professor assigned a text book in the syllabus but used a different one to issue assignments and compose the tests (in other words, I didn't have & couldn't get the case study that was assigned). Got a high grade thanks to outside research (in other words, this post isn't sour grapes) but it's the 2nd time in 2 semesters this exact thing has happened! And in both cases, the professors were condescending for several weeks - and then when the error was finally admitted - after weeks of emailing requesting page #s, etc. - the arrogant attitude was unbelievable. Run - don't walk - to the U Mass system or anyplace else if you're looking for online courses. Good luck! read more

Honestly, it's an overpriced college and it's up to you on how you want to tackle your experience here. Quite frequently the Undergrads are lazy and do not put forth the effort in their academics. However, the Professors are very patient and steadily push their students to achieve success. I can't believe they closed the original library, what an eyesore. For people wanting to take night courses, the classes are affordable and you're not thrown into a big lecture hall with hundreds of students. Additionally, lab classes are all given on the same night, so you don't have to go twice or three times a week for the same class. The professors are highly knowledgeable and experienced and make the effort to ensure that the students actually learn the material. read more

Salem State is a great school if you put the effort into your classes. Is it Harvard? No. But it's not $50,000 a year either. You can get a great education for pretty cheap money. Is there red tape? Sure there is, just like all the other schools. Do they cancel classes? Sure. When the enrollment is not enough the class gets cancelled. But you also will never find yourself in a 250 seat class like some of the bigger name schools. Small class sizes are one of the benefits of this place. Of course when the get TOO small, they have to be cancelled. But none of the people who bitched about it mentioned something called "Independent Study" - most of the professors would be happy to do an independent study with you to help you graduate on time. I love going to school here. Easy to walk to every campus. (Though there are ice some times on the sidewalks... annoying and dangerous). All of my professors (except 1) so far were exceptional. You can really connect with the professors here, and they speak clearly and seem to genuinely care about the students. The cafeteria food gets old after about 2 weeks, and closes too early if you're a working student. So beware about this. You'll waste your money if you cannot get to the cafe in time. read more

I have had a horrendous time trying to get someone at Salem State to review my old credits FROM Salem State and tell me the best course to complete my degree. I am the Poster Child for why you should not quit school but it has been very frustrating to find someone who can help me. For continuing ed students I highly recommend University of Maryland On Line. They are a school with a good reputation and they actually TRY to help make the application process easy! read more

My daughter went to Salem State and loved it. I would give the university a 5 star rating, if it weren't for the absence of career services. The professors were so knowledgeable and so helpful! My daughter loved them all! The only drawback is the university did not help at all with assisting in finding her a job after graduation. It has been a very frustrating experience for my daughter. I went to Salem my freshman year. I transfered out. Salem State College is known for how AWFUL their administration is. Just try to walk right in to financial aid or busars office and get your problem fixed. It will happen after you wait in line for 3 hours. If you try calling the voice recording on the phone will tell you to "hang up and try again later because all operators are busy"... this happens 9/10 times you call there. I had a hold put on my record about a year and a half after I had transferred out. The college sent us a bill for $1,250.00 and that was it. It didn't say what it was for or why a year and a half later we were being billed. After my mom ripped then a new asshole over the phone they told us they would send the whole bill.. it never came. The point of this is that due to this hold on my record NONE or my transcripts will be released to me or any of the colleges i am trying to apply to for the fall. Other colleges WILL NOT accept me without my SSC transcripts. so in the end, salem state college has fucked me over so bad and i would not recommend this institution to anyone read more

It is such a good school.... If you're a commuter. Living here really sucks. The rules here are especially dumb. When I try and email someone I usually don't get a reply. If you're coming here with a friend or bf/gf make sure you live in the same dorm. If not, move to their dorm within the first week. Otherwise you have to go through a ton of crap. The classes are fine and the professors are very nice. The bathrooms could use some improving (as with any college campus). But they are always clean. It's mainly the sinks that annoy me. The toilets are new and automatic. No matter which dorm you live in, it's not a far walk from anything. There isn't a whole lot to do on the weekends, unless you are proactive about it. Registration requires you to get up at 7am. They only allow fish as pets, which is a big thing for me, as I am an animal person and I'm studying animals too. Having something like a hamster would be nice. The administration here honestly acts like we are 8 years old. There are so many dumb rules in place that need to be fixed. The guest policy/sleepover policy is just down right frustrating. If you're thinking of Salem, it's not bad, seeing as the price is cheap. If you're rich...go somewhere else. read more

I got my Bachelor's from Salem State, and I had a good experience there. The facilities leave a bit to be desired, but the academic value is outstanding. My major was self-designed and largely consisted of History, Philosophy and Sociology coursework. Most of my professors were truly excellent, albeit challenging. None of my classes were held in lecture halls, and very rarely did they exceed 30 students (but stayed around 20 on avg). Virtually all of my professors had Phd's, and most remained actively engaged in the community and in producing rigorous independent research. At the university in my home state where I later earned my Master's, I was shocked to find that most of my MA-seeking peers were teaching undergraduate-level courses there. They were way too busy and scattered, taking full time graduate course loads, preparing for comps, and teaching 2 courses. Most of them were smart enough, but couldn't actively engage in teaching large classes and felt as if they were doing a disservice to their students. read more

The area is nice and many of the professors are really good. Administration is a mess and the parking is absolutely terrible, especially if you are a commuter. The major parking lot floods when it rains and there are less parking spots due to all of the construction that is going on. I transferred to Salem State and personally I wish that I never did. The school lacks communication in general from administration, faculty and students. Administration says one thing and the teachers say another and if you do not go looking into a matter, than you may very well get stuck at this school much longer than you want to. Almost every semester I have met a few people who have had nothing but issues with this school. On the other hand there are many people who really do like this school. As long as you know what you want to do and have an advisor who knows what they are doing you may not have any issues. From my experience, I would not recommend transferring to this school. read more
