    Central Campus (September 4th, 2020, 7:22 PM)
    Lauren W.

As a freshman student (part of the class of 2024) I've been attending this amazing and beautiful university for almost 7 months at this point, and I can honestly say I love it here! The food is good, I've made plenty of good friends, and almost everything that I need (like shopping, food, essentials) is within walking distance for someone like me who isn't yet a car owner! The education I've received so far has been pretty exceptional considering my first year of college has been amongst the global COVID-19 pandemic, but the classes are awesome so far and I can't wait to see what my next three years at this school look like! So far, my only complaint is the confusion of the campus-bus service, known as the Viking Shuttle, and it's kinda unreliable schedule and clarity of routes and destinations. I'm never quite sure which bus I'm on, and where the stops are, since the bus drivers seem to be operating on a different schedule than what's on the website. In lieu of that, I would like to say that I knew this school was the right fit for me the second I first arrived on campus in the fall of 2019 for my campus tour! Also, there's a convenience store right beside my dorm hall that's perfect for buying groceries, lottery tickets, and more!

I went and visited the school, it's very beautiful and the art and theater programs seem promising here!

The college is prioritizing "other summer events" over the class of 2020. They should have started planning proper celebration for the class of 2020 as soon as they started planning for 2021. So disappointing, they do not care about their students.

Dr. Richard Wylie is very frustrating to deal with, he states he has this open email system, yet it is extreme fluff! He never hears out the student/parent and does what makes him look good. Recently his change of the way students select rooms, has so much controversy to it, you can see right through that it is his way to promote the 2.0-2.5 GPA students to higher status so that they can get the premier rooms on Campus. This same leadership team sent to our home Merit awards for another student. When questioned if more was able to be received the Financial arm of this leader told us we are at the highest (funny as he didn't know we got the letter for not only my child but also for the next letter in the alphabet). Lets discuss first year housing and how they let the two athletes into the room one week early and the forced triple had a bed propped so far up - it was a safety concern and when brought to the dorm president - told us to deal with it and stop complaining. When our plans changed slightly, I called multiple times to reschedule, left several voicemails, and never received a single response. Since we were already in town, we stopped by in person. They agreed to let us participate in a demonstration and told us they would mail the pumpkin we made since it needed time to cool. They took our mailing address--but the pumpkin never arrived. The entire experience felt disorganized and disingenuous. Communication was virtually nonexistent from start to finish, and promises made in person were never followed through on. I would not recommend booking here, especially if you're traveling from out of town and need any flexibility with your plans. Customer service and follow-through matter just as much as the experience itself, and unfortunately, this business fell well short on both.

But once he started at the Phoenix School, things turned around. He came home after the first day and said, "It's like the teachers aren't even teachers--they're just people!" The caring relationship with his teachers, the community at the school, the way his teachers push him to do more than he thought he could and support him as he learns to push himself has been amazing. He loves school now and is thriving academically, socially, and emotionally. The way they integrate learning across all their activities is special. Students learn all the academic skills throughout all their activities, along with specialized practice in, say, math or writing, especially as they get older. They also use the community at large as their classroom with frequent out-of-the-classroom learning experiences that engage students far more than anything I've seen at any other school. Teachers support students as they produce high-quality work, with autonomy and ownership over their own learning. Teachers are among the most dedicated professional educators I've ever met. They work hard to create a community of students, faculty, staff, parents, and community members dedicated to the well-being and education of students as complete people. It's not possible for me to say enough good things about this school.
