The college is prioritizing "other summer events" over the class of 2020. They should have started planning proper celebration for the class of 2020 as soon as they started planning for 2021. So disappointing, they do not care about their students.

Dr. Richard Wylie is very frustrating to deal with, he states he has this open email system, yet it is extreme fluff! He never hears out the student/parent and does what makes him look good. Recently his change of the way students select rooms, has so much controversy to it, you can see right through that it is his way to promote the 2.0-2.5 GPA students to higher status so that they can get the premier rooms on Campus. This same leadership team sent to our home Merit awards for another student. When questioned if more was able to be received the Financial arm of this leader told us we are at the highest (funny as he didn't know we got the letter for not only my child but also for the next letter in the alphabet). Lets discuss first year housing and how they let the two athletes into the room one week early and the forced triple had a bed propped so far up - it was a safety concern and when brought to the dorm president - told us to deal with it and stop complaining. The food is good, I've made plenty of good friends, and almost everything that I need (like shopping, food, essentials) is within walking distance for someone like me who isn't yet a car owner! The education I've received so far has been pretty exceptional considering my first year of college has been amongst the global COVID-19 pandemic, but the classes are awesome so far and I can't wait to see what my next three years at this school look like! So far, my only complaint is the confusion of the campus-bus service, known as the Viking Shuttle, and it's kinda unreliable schedule and clarity of routes and destinations. I'm never quite sure which bus I'm on, and where the stops are, since the bus drivers seem to be operating on a different schedule than what's on the website. In lieu of that, I would like to say that I knew this school was the right fit for me the second I first arrived on campus in the fall of 2019 for my campus tour! Also, there's a convenience store right beside my dorm hall that's perfect for buying groceries, lottery tickets, and more!

I was placed in peabody hall this year with no notice that there would be construction directly outside of my dorm for the ENTIRE year. As someone who works full time and usually until 12 am, getting woken up EVERY morning by drilling and beeping sucked. When I contacted housing and the RD of my building about moving dorms I was ghosted. I've gotten food poisoning from the dining hall over 4 times. Everytime I've stepped foot into marsh dining hall, there's been mice. The students here are inconsiderate and if you get asked to do a group project, be prepared to do the bulk of it. Faculty doesn't reach out and help with career guidance upon gradation- you get to figure it all out on your own! If you are just looking for a degree and no community or a miserable college experience Salem State is the place for you!

I've now taken 5 personal interest cooking classes through the Northern Essex Community College…read morePersonal Interest program and can't recommend them enough. These classes are generally three hour hands on workshops held in the college's downtown Haverhill culinary school kitchens. Faculty have been friendly, knowledgable and helpful, and the food always delicious. Each instructor has the flexibility to teach their own way so it's always a new experience. Most recently I did a Thai Street food class in which our instructor, Ploy, walked us through making a rainbow salad (with carrots, apples and a variety seasonings), Thai corn fritters, red curry with chicken (served with white rice), and a fun color changing butterfly pea limeade. Our instructor was super professional and balanced learning and the practicalities or working with non-professionals just right. Other classes I've enjoyed include Empanadas, Vietnamese street food, Indian appetizers, and chinese buns. The variety offered is amazing, and you can pick either weeknights or Saturday 10am-1pm.

I felt like I got no real support from them they they didn't give me a chance to learn a lot of the basics that an RN should know by graduation. There was one Carol Nash, person, one of the instructors who was extremely unfair to me. She even admitted that she just didn't like me as a person so she decided not to give me a chance when there was an opportunity to learn; she would never let me partake in the interesting observations or learning experiences and that went on throughout the entire time. The instructors were poor quality not very fair markers, they would have their favorites. If I wasn't highly motivated to get my RN I would have never made it. And to top it off at the very end of the last semester when I was just about to graduate one of the instructors decided me and this one other student did not have good isolation technique The entire time we were in school they never said anything about that but then the last week of school they threatened not graduate me and this one other student because the instructor didn't like my technique. So in order for us to pass we both had to pay a special tutor $100 and at the time that was a lot of money in '86 $100 a piece .Yet the tutor said that both of our sterile technique was good. They tried everything just to trip me up and few other people. I wasn't the only one who was treated poorly in that school.

NSCC has two campuses: Lynn and Danvers. This is a review for Lynn…read more The commuter rail is right across the street, so it's convenient for people who don't have cars-- or for people who have cars but don't want to drive in the snow. Since I live in Gloucester, the train schedule isn't ideal, but it's better than nothing. My first semester, I took a night class that ended around 9pm. Unfortunately, this meant I had to wait until 11pm to take the train home. The school is technically closed by then, but I got to wait inside until I had to leave. I actually wasn't worried about my safety, but the campus police were more than happy to walk me over and keep me company until I got on the train. It's kind of strange how different presentations/activities are done in the cafeteria, but I guess they just use the space they have. I saw someone talk about the Netherlands, which was kind of interesting, but most of the people hanging around the caf weren't there to listen to the guy talk. I love the library. I spend most of my time at school sitting there. There are a couple areas with fairly comfortable couches, little cubicles with lights/outlets to plug in a laptop, and desks where groups can study. I'm a big fan of the small class sizes. For the most part, I've loved my teachers. Most of them are more than willing to meet for extra help if you want it, and they really do want you to succeed. The quality of the class, of course, depends on the individual teacher. Some classes are, in my mind, high school level, but if you want a challenge, you can find it. Oh, and if you really want to step out of your comfort zone? You can cross-register with any one of ten NECCUM schools, which includes Gordon College, Endicott College, Salem State College and others. Doing this actually costs the same amount as registering for a class at NSCC. Neat, right? I sure thought so. I haven't done it yet, but I hope to register for an Italian class in the fall. (The downside is that many employees at NSCC have never heard of this, so you have to insist that it exists. Here's some information: http://www.northshore.edu/registrar/neccum.html) I didn't want to go to NSCC, but you know what? It's not so bad. I'm saving money by completing classes I would've needed at a four-year school anyway, I'm building confidence by earning good grades at a not-so-intimidating school, and it's somewhat close to home. I don't know if I'd recommend it to EVERYONE, but it's really the best thing for me at this point in time.

There is a big difference between NSCC in Danvers and Lynn. Danvers is a much newer facility with…read moremore resources than Lynn. Lynn's campus was built after the Great Lynn Fire in 1981. If I remember correctly it was built next to where one of the buildings burned down. The empty field next to the campus on Broad St couldn't be built on because it was contaminated. Anyways, the Lynn campus is obviously aged. The building itself is holding up alright and the campus has the less priviliaged students of the immediate area. Danver's campus has the students from more promenient cities such as Boxford, Georgetown, Hamilton-Wenham, Middleton, Danvers, etc. So Lynn's campus is much more diverse from experiencing both. The majority faculty of the facility teach at both locations and the college itself is pretty good. Now, education in Massachusetts is not cheap......but compared to Salem State and U-Mass Boston tuition prices........this place is a steal. Community college is like a disco with books: "Here's ten dollars; let me get my learn on!" -Chris Rock There are many unique clubs and organizations here to be apart of. The faculty seems to care about your success even if you don't. Tuition is $125 per credit, the books are expensive as always. If you want to be financially wise, don't go to a four year school right away. Hit up this place first and get the prerequisite classes finished......95% will transfer within the ctate college system agreement North Shore has. You'll save yourself some money and be able to see two schools instead of just one. -Almost done with NSCC, aiming for UNC: Chapel Hill!
