What you don't want from a hospital is inadequate service from check-in to discharge, unprofessional behavior, poor communication, etc. Now what you DO want from a hospital is whole-person care, individual needs, communication, responsiveness, respectful staff, cleanliness and of course, (a)highly skilled doctor(s). My daughter got the last-mentioned and much more. Months prior to my daughter getting her surgery, she did tons of research. And locating a doctor who's not only a 'female doctor'- but one who's a die-hard specialist in her own right, was at my daughter's top of the list. My daughter lucked out when she met her surgeon who addressed her many questions, her needs and turned out to be the most professional and attentive. Located less than an hour from downtown Portland, Salem Hospital provided a positive experience, with friendly and helpful nurses and crystal clear communication when my daughter's checked herself in before 6am on the day of her surgery. The anesthesiologist asked all the necessary questions before surgery. I was a hot mess while I waited for my daughter because she'd be in the operating room for several hours. What made my nerves ease drastically were the constant text message updates throughout her surgery. Without those, I would've been a bigger mess. Salem Hospital feels safe, is clean, check-in was a breeze, waiting room is comfortable, a tv played quietly and there's a hot beverage station. Nurses turned out to be fantastic. My daughter searched for the best surgeon and she got it. As for me, Salem Hospital provided respect, care and delivered the best results at that moment pre, during and post surgery. read more

This is a welfare hospital. Somewhere to go when you want to catch something, anything but quality care from the staff. 1 DR seemed professional but the staff was pretty useless in their waiting area with all the other patients being ignored. Don't go here for emergencies,or you will end up needing an emergency room. You sit in a chair surrounded by other sick people, not even a place to lay down. In 2023 paramedics brought me to the hospital. I didn't die, but they fabricated stories on the medical chart. The made it look like I was faking since they could not figure out what was wrong. I don't think they realized I had access to that part of the chart. Whoops. I was in a complete autistic shutdown/burnout and they had not a clue. As I mentioned, I didn't die -- but my doctor (the one with the great hair) commanded me to walk -- and not being able to walk was my primary symptom. So, I walked about 10 feet and nearly fell but stumbled back to my bed. They need to do better though, even though -- yes I am alive. read more

Salem Health has become a monopoly in Salem Oregon. They contrpol most of the medical employees in Salem and the only hospital in town. They can deny services to anyone who has been an issue or who needs a lot of extra care. Decisions on patient care are often made by many non medical personnel who see $ as the goal of the care provider. The doctors and staff are responsible and care, but the administration could care less about patients needs only their profits. They are listed as non profit which is a complete joke. read more

A nightmare from the time I went through the doors! I am a Kaiser patient but the neatest Kaiser hospital is in Clackamas. I have extensive hardware in my neck from a surgery in 2020. I've never had an issue with it at all unti recently & Im having unbearable pain. To begin with, after sitting in the lobby for 3 hours I went up to ask if I'd been called. The nurse asked my first and last name, I told her and she said you're not even in the queue.. she then asked what name is on the wrist band they put on you at registration. Low and behold, it was not my name or birthdate. So she cut the band off. created a new one and assured me that she placed me in the queue for the time of my arrival. So soon after I was called in to triage for vitals.. then a few minutes later, I was called to the back and placed in a room. The RN was awesome very attentive and helpful. The doctor on the other hand was another entire story. He entered the room smugly sat down, crossed his legs and proceeded to tell me he had heard that I wanted a CT scan or an MRI but " let me tell you what an ER is for" & and proceeded to tell me about gunshot wounds, automobile accidents stabbing the things that anybody with a partial brain knows. What he didn't know is that I'm an RN so I interrupted him to tell him that. And told me to. follow up with my PCP. So back to square one as I have communicated with my PCP, who didn't really know what to do with my case. (requires a neurosurgeon.), so we got recommendations for tests from a neurosurgeon, which I've had two of the three most recently the CT scan one week ago that I was told may take three weeks to be resulted. From everything that I've read if the hardware has shifted or moved it is a medical emergency. So I still wait and hope and pray that nothing life-threatening happens.. but since this review was for Salem Hospital, I would recommend that you go just about anywhere besides Salem Hospital for the emergency room unless you really have a major trauma like the doctor was describing. BYW, I would give a 10 out of 10 to each RN I dealt with, a zero out of 10 for the person working in registration and a one out of 10 for the doctor simply because I know he spent several years in school and residency to be there. read more

Was in the hospital for three days. Because of an abscess. The dressing on the wound needed to be taken out and repacked every other day because the wound was in an area I could not reach myself. On the discharge order it said wound care would call me and set it up. They never called so I called them and it clearly states on my discharge order which has been highlighted in yellow by the doctor stating that the wound needed to be .repacked every other day. I was told by wound care that they do not do wounds like mine when the doctor clearly stated I need to go to wound care? So I have been scrambling around finally got my doctor to change the bandage after four days. my doctor set it up so I could get the bandage changed every other day at his office. So much for wound care!!! read more

we were sent by ambulance to Salem Hospital by urgent care... placed in "hall bed" as they said it would be a a short wait for a room... 3hours and still waiting as they continue to place new arrivals into rooms... absolutely no privacy... talking about my husbands medical issues and all the people walking around can hear requested a room and we were brushed off. not to mention the lack of any kind of urgency to treat... if we ever need to go to the ER again it won't be here read more

Had a very good ER visit last night. Everyone I saw (which was quite a few) was very courteous and thoughtful. Before I even got to be seen by Dr., they already had labs ordered. Everyone I dealt with explained processes and findings very well and encouraged other questions I may have had. This is probably the best ER visit that I have ever had. read more

This hospital is so bad, I've been waiting for over 45 mins to see a doctor or even my nurse! They put me into a room, and left me. I am a cancer, patient and here for a potential pulmonary embolism, and came to the emergency room due to having more severe complications and they literally do not give a shit!!!!! Not one person came into the room to check on me or at least let me know that they will get to me soon. The nurses here all need to be fired. Doctors need to be fired. Everybody needs to be fired & Let go....then new staff needs to be brought into this hospital because it is not being ran properly and I can see tons of lawsuits (oh look just google and you can already see they have already had lawsuits) coming to this hospital because of how negligent they are. This was the worst hospital experience I've ever had. The nurses were unprofessional and seemed untrained in both medical care and compassion. Instead of helping patients in pain, they argued and showed no empathy. It feels like many staff are only there for a paycheck, not to care for people. Truly disappointing and concerning. read more

Since they monopolize care options in Salem, it means long wait times, multiple weeks out to get appointments. In Jan 2025 they decided not to renew their Regence Blue Cross contract. This meant I had to find care options in other cities. I have to say that my new orthopedic provider is BETTER than the one I had for decades. I can be seen quicker and the location doesn't take forever to walk from the parking area to the clinic. Same with laboratory and imaging services that I had to seek out elsewhere. It has been a blessing in disguise and I won't go back if they ever renew their contract. read more

My wife had to go to the ER. She was having extreme back pain. She was sent there by ambulance. I arrived a little later because I was working at the time. They had to put her in a bed that was out in the hallway. She was screaming in pain and people just ignored her. My daughter, who was there with her before I showed up, finally got someone's attention. The service, and the treatment she received was bad there. It's sad because the service used to be a lot better. I don't know what changed but they definitely need to change something. I would definitely recommend a different ER like maybe Stayton or somewhere else if possible. read more

Yesterday I spent 7 hours in the ER waiting room at Salem Hospital. I have pneumonia and was having trouble breathing. When I finally saw the PA, he was going to just send me home. I had to suggest that a breathing treatment might help. The RT that gave me the breathing treatment had been working for 15 hours! Why doesn't Salem Hospital hire more staff? This was my second bad experience with Salem Hospital ER. I should have learned my lesson after the first bad experience and driven to Santiam Hospital ER. read more

I went to the hospital with signs of strep throat and an ear infection. The PA provided me with an alternative to get out of there quicker by not checking the mouth swab for strep throat.In which I agreed " To hit to birds with one stone" They prescribed me amoxicillin. I went home and took a nap to be woken up to pins and needles in my arms,legs and not being able to walk or bend my toes. The symptoms only got worse, rash, difficulty breathing, ears ringing,tunnel vision, diarrhea, and my brain and ears numb. The MD came in and said that we need to run tests to see if a spinal tap is needed. I told the MD this has only happened after I took the medication. Didn't want to listen to me,and was going to go straight to a spinal tap. I told the MD no not without running tests. Didn't run tests, didn't run blood and sat in the medical chair, with hard of breathing for hours. I recommend Stayton hospital they listen, take your symptoms seriously and run the appropriate tests. I recommend never going here.The only reason I went here is because I recently moved from stayton from Salem and I needed medical attention right away. read more

Me and my wife went in today for our first ultrasound for our 2nd child, Angela did an incredible job. It was the quickest and most detailed ultrasound we've ever had and this is at 9 weeks pregnant. I've been in ER actually in the emergency room not waiting room. Been here 5 1/2 hours they moved me from pod 1 to pod 3 so o could be seen more often. This is a lie haven't seen anyone since they moved to over an hour ago. Still haven't seen md so I can't even get a drink of water. read more

I am so amazed at my recent visit see my father in ICU. The nurses and doctors were beyond helpful and communicative. At one point a nurse came in to provide warm blankets for my mom and me because it was a bit cold. The staff seems genuinely caring for patients. i hope others see how hard these people work to make a very difficult situation a bit better. In a world of low staff in the medical field i am thankful my father is getting the care he is. Thank you Salem Hospital. read more

First and last time I will ever go to Salem Hospital. Brought in by ambulance for abdominal and back pain like I've never had before. Was put in a bed in the hallway for HOURS without seeing a nurse or doctor. Was jabbed a few times to get a blood draw and was told at that time they needed a urine sample...had to hunt a nurse down after waiting over an hour so I could do the pee test. But then I had to sit with my cup of urine in my bed for another hour before I hunted down another nurse to give it to them. I didn't see a doctor until I had already been there for 5 hours. Had to beg for an ultrasound that I'm told was normal and there is no explanation for my pain. Total of 9 hours spent in the ER to be given a medication I cannot take and it was sent to a pharmacy that isn't open for two days?!?!?! I am gonna be stuck with a massive bill and still have to go to my doctor for help. read more

Salem Health has always treated me and my family with nothing but decency and respect. The biggest thing to remember is that 1. Yes, there is a long wait. That's because ERs get junked up with people who may not necessarily NEED to be in the ER but rather wait until Urgent Care opens. 2. It is not a doctors office. If you wanted to be seen in the order in which you got there, then you should have gone to the Dr. This is an ER (EMERGENCY department). The key word is emergency. So if you are there with a fever and sniffles and someone else comes in with a broken limb, then guess what, you will be waiting longer. Life before limb people. The bottom line is to treat them with respect, and they will return that to you. read more

From the reviews I'm reading here about the Salem Oregon Hospital, it looks like it's being run by the New World Order: ongoing neglect of older patients and veterans, terrible staff with crap-y attitudes who literally should not be in health care, and leaving patients in the hospital waiting room and hallways to suffer with no treatment at all. I also wonder if care is being determined by your racial profile (= if you're old AND white, forget about it). I also noticed there isn't a social media moderator who is responding to the hospital's Yelp reviews anymore. That is a big red flag. I guess the only way they will respond to your feedback is if you know someone on their Board or by filing a formal lawsuit. In the late 1970's, My mom was in the ICU at this hospital for over 2 weeks with a cerebral hemorrhage. By the grace of God, she recovered and was generally treated well by doctor's and staff. Based on the way two of my elderly family members have been treated here this summer (one is a U.S. Veteran), I wouldn't check my mom into this hospital today- I'd drive her myself to Tualatin or Portland. The $$$ profit motive has really impacted the level of quality care and basic human compassion. I'm also shocked that they are continuing to use PCR tests on patients to diagnose COVID-19, which have been proven to show false positives and were never designed to test for viruses. But if $$$ are involved, they will continue to follow the deadly CDC protocols. I just hope they're no longer using the deadly Ventilator/Remdesivir combo on patients. Remember: One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest was filmed at the Oregon State Hospital. Looks like Salem Hospital has taken some detailed notes from that movie on how to treat their patients. Had a 7 day stay due to being septic and ended up with a leg amputation. Everyone from the nurses and Drs and lab technicians, to food service, surgeon's and everyone in between, took excellent care of me. I had no complaints at all. Very kind and caring place. read more

Horrible experiences all the way around. I have been sexually assaulted by nurses and had my property stolen from me and sold off whilst still being a patient, contrary to their policy of not selling property until 30 days AFTER discharge. When I contacted patient advocacy, I was told that I needed to provide proof of purchase of property, and basically "sucks to suck." Secondly, the sexual assault: I was in and a male nurse had me pee in a cup, and although I could've done it myself, the nurse was there and he grabbed my testicles...for some reason. And other things happened with a female nurse, but I don't think they're PG, so I won't share them. I would never recommend seeking care from this hospital and I would avoid it at all costs because they honestly suck. read more

My sister died a horrible, painful, unnecessary death at this hospital. She was in agony for several hours and was put in a closed room because "she had covid", which she did not. Her caretaker will never fully recover from the trauma of listening to my sister screaming as unconcerned staff walked up and down the corridors. The one and only nurse who helped was the one who allowed me to be on speaker phone for the last 3 hours of my sister's life (I live too far away to have gotten there in time). I went with my daughter to an appointment. the security guard in the parking of C is horrible. i have leggings on and a shirt. for what ever reason the stupid alarm goes off. he points to my chest and says i have to wand you and pat you down. i pulled my wallet keys and phone out of my pocket in my leggings and said no you dont. No strange man should be saying that and pointing like that. i was shaking when I got to my daughters appointment. This is not tbe first time i have had this happen . ive had it happen at the lab on State st as well. I was wearing a sports bra so it wasnt metal in my bra. Portland hospitals dont even have TSA wanna bes. at least if it was TSA they would have a female security guard. read more

I had an appointment with the neurology department due to ongoing symptoms from a concussion. Robert, a PA, was very informative, caring, professional and knowledgeable about my sitution. He spent about 40 minutes with me and was quite thorough regarding my symptoms. The MA was very friendly and kind. Also, another employee I had asked while trying to locate this office, went above and beyond the call of duty. She walked me to the doorway of the building that my appointment was in. Even the security guards at the entrance were pleasant. I haven't had that kind of treatment ever at a hospital. I was pleasantly surprised! Once you are brought in to a room and "diagnosed" you are then taken to a large room next to every other person that was brought in and you have to verify your personal information in front of every person in there. What a shitty experience. I've been A Firefighter Paramedic over 49 yrs and all over the world. This is a horrible ER that they have. I woukd not take my Dog here let alone a human. My husband was admitted to the hospital for flu and pneumonia. He had excellent care from nurse Marie on the first day, Nurse Matt Elliott, and CNA Jovanna on the second day. Their care was exceptional and went above and beyond. They addressed all of our concerns above what was expected. They were very attentive even though they were exceptionally busy. read more

9/18/2024 great work MGB with my mom in the ED, my mom came in with chest pains and could not breath , they did everything they could for her . They ran every test they could and made sure we were comfortable as they had her on the EKG machine, thank you to our nurse Nicole in the ED, and the MD Todd, I am proud to say that I work here as a secretary on Phippens at MGB and I never been so proud of this ED team. Interaction with staff and patient advocate at Salem Hospital was impolite and ill mannered ! My father n law passed away ~ Hospital Staff had clear instruction not to contact his wife , until family could arrive at rehabilitation facility to tell her in person. Hospital Staff contacted his wife .. Notification over the phone ...of her husband of 45 years... death was " Do you want us to harvest his organs" ? Beware of medical transport ...Hospital calls them ...HUGE SCAM ....they give price, demands cash payment ...then hustle more money , once they arrive ..then double bills insurance company. Make sure you get a receipt for all transactions. Just days before his death ....Family waited over ten hours to transport , from hospital patient just out of critical care to rehabilitation skilled nursing in Dallas. They tried to just put him in Uber. Outright most unprofessional , rude staff ...ever. Seriously lacking in communication skills and nonexistent dignity manners. I was brought in by ambulance with a fracture in my spine, which you'd think might get somebody's attention at this hospital. Nope. I was left on a gurney in the hallway for over 3 hours in horrific pain before my number, or however they do it there, came up. They have NO method of assessing severity of cases, and it's first-come, first served. They're overwhelmed and understaffed, and dealing with hoards of transients who come in with vague complaints hoping to get a meal and a bed for the night. In my pain-crazed delirium in the hallway, I saw and heard plenty of that going on. The doctors and nurses there work hard, but it's not enough. I'll crawl on my hands and knees to get out of that place if another ambulance dumps me there again. read more

LOL, god help you if you get taken here for an emergency. I was brought here when I was having some pretty severe kidney stone pain, and after they rolled me into the hospital, after about 10 minutes of waiting at a desk, they eventually rolled me to a spot in the hall... and that was it. Literally. For about 30-40 minutes. Not a single person came to check up on me, check vitals, even acknowledge my presence. Now I get that it's a hospital and that I'm not the only patient they have, but it'd be nice to know that I even exist. That I'm on _someone's_ radar. Thankfully my pain eventually subsided and I just got up and went home. I can only wonder how it might have been if I'd had something life-threatening. I'd probably be dead right now. read more

I wrote a very long positive review of this hospital which I accidentally deleted. I wish I remembered individuals names like I did at the time like the amazing front desk person who must have called over half a dozen times to try to get me into a room to the point I asked her to stop worried she might get in trouble to the kind attentive nurses to the doctor that stayed until 3 am to do my surgery, YES I had to wait many hours to get into a room but it is an EMERGENCY hospital and likely many people had more dire need for a room than I, who stupidly waited four days with a appendix that needed removal. What I did see in the waiting area was one angry drug seeker after another screaming abuses at at the staff while the staff in turn, somehow, someway treated them with dignity and respect. I suspect many of the bad reviews were written by these people. Me I had a great experience that will last a lifetime. read more

Poor quality clicky staff often at war with each other. Mid levels have inflated egos that are unchecked in reality. Slanted dysfunctional style much more important than providers education and competence. read more
