Now this rivals Fridriech Wilderness as the premier park/hike in the San Antonio area!…read more There are plenty of hills and climbs here with beautiful background scenery that accompanies the trails here. Whether walking/hiking/biking, be prepared to be captivated by your surroundings and also out of breath from all the movement. I can only imagine what this park is like in the summers with the hot sun scorching on you. According to some reviews, there is a tower that gives panoramic views of SA. Unfortunately I could not reach this tower as I was pressed for time. But i did get quite the workout as I trekked along the unpaved trails and soaked in the views of plants, trees, and the wildlife. Additionally, there's a covered pavilion and rest rooms at the parking area of the park. And plenty of parking. This is worth visiting when you're in the SA area; just make sure you've got proper footing and bugspray!

Multiple, well-marked and mapped trails with varying levels of difficulty and accessibility provide perfect spaces for walking, running, hiking and cycling. Also offers plenty of rugged trails and even a rock climbing wall for extra challenges! And don't miss the view from the tower! Beautifully maintained with fixed restrooms on one side and portable lavatories on the other. Park police and cycling trail stewards offer routine safety and support.

Ah, Salado Creek Greenway. This is one of my go-to parks during Covid. I still go here with a…read morefriend who lives close to the park. Salado is accessible off a 1604 entrance, which is easy to miss unless one is looking for it. The park can also be reached through some of walking trails at Hardberger, or is accessible from the neighborhoods that feed into the park through private entrances. Most of Salado Creek passes directly behind enclosed Shavano Park neighborhoods. It is an interesting walk for this reason, but also because it has one of the only outside rock climbing walls in San Antonio. On any given day, you will see various groups with climbing gear entering the park. This is what makes parking at the 1604 entrance challenging. It can get overwhelmingly crowded during peak times. I have seen people park on the grassy part of the entrance due to the insane parking. It definitely pays to get here around 8 for a spot and, yet, getting out can be quite another adventure! But once in the park, the climbers are fascinating to watch. The first time I saw people climbing the rock wall, I didn't realize this was a park allowable activity and did a double take when I saw them hanging from the sides with their climbing gear. It is impressive to see the focus and skill it takes for the climbers, not to mention, the challenge. The trail also has numerous bike riders and walkers, so it can get busy during peak hours. Salado Creek Greenway can be a hearty and entertaining walk. Just make sure to arrive around 8, to avoid parking issues. It can be especially beneficial for avoiding the San Antonio Summer heat!

This, one mid Spring morning, I decided to walk to and on the bridge with a friend. I will say, it was worth the walk. Truthfully, there is not much to see, but it does have some very nice spots to stop and look at native plants in the area. It also has some viewing boxes for sitting in the shade and observing fauna. I enjoyed the walk because it was different and it gave an alternative route to the park. I expected to see the Parkway (Wurzbach) from the bridge, but it's really not easy to see for safety reasons. However, one can see it was well planned and definitely, invites the visitor to look at the plants. During our walk, the area was a bit dry, as we have been going through a drought, but I'm sure it's spiffed up a bit with the recent rains. In any case, I do believe it is worth a visit.

Our Division Chief coordinated a presentation from a park guide and she gave us great perspective on the land bridge to include how it got funded, details of the build, and animal sightings. After the presentation our group headed out to walk the land bridge. It's about a 0.5 mile walk. If not paying attention you'll realize you walked across after you walked. It was pretty quiet and patrons are respectful of each other.
