We hit the trails at Friedrich Wilderness Park and wandered off the path for nearly four hours. The day was gorgeous - clear skies and perfect weather. During our exploring, we discovered a windmill and a cluster of old stones hidden just a few inches beneath the surface. We managed to wrap up 10 miles of hiking and climbing. For people that love hiking this park provides the good quiet feel the burn hiking experience beautiful trails. I did walk some of the easygoing trail and I felt brave with my friend to go to the level 4 and 2 minutes later looking up to where we heading we got discouraged and turned around and headed back to the wimpy trail hahaha!! For fit people this is a great place to hike!! I took a look at the class room very nice setting. We had the pleasure to meet David Goree. He is the person that teaches crafts to children's and has knowledge about history of the park. He was very helpful and attentive to us. Keeping in mind that is part of the parks amenities I recommend to find information about classes and activities for children's and take time to take your children's for a great experience. My husband and I love visiting Friendrich Park for some good hiking within 20 minutes of our home. They have both challenging and easier hiking trails, which is appreciative. You can add different trails together to make a nice long hike or a shorter one. The more challenging trails have some nice spots where you can get great views across hill country! The parking lot is way too small and it can get crowded on the weekend, but this doesn't deter us from going. Getting there earlier can help. Make sure to take water and some trekking poles can be helpful on many of the trails since there is elevation and it can be challenging on the knees. There are bathrooms. Not the most glamorous but if you expect glamorous while in the great outdoors, you'll be sorely disappointed anyway. I highly recommend giving this park a visit! read more

Friedrich is a staple in my life. This parkcan be very busy at times, so plan accordingly when it comes to parking and carpool if you are meeting up with friends. The trails are well marked and maintained. They have restrooms at the entrance and the trashcans at that area as well. The main loop trail is perfect for the family hike or a chill climb with friends. They have plenty of trails that branch off and they are well marked with difficulty ratings. I appreciate that everyone I come across is friendly and simply enjoying their time with nature. This is a trail in South Texas, so I'd recommend bringing some water and sunscreen, but otherwise you really don't need much. I've never run into any animal other than maybe a bird or squirrel, but clearly there are some night creatures from the trail markings. For being inside a major city, there are surprisingly quite a few places to rest and take in the view of the hill country. Overall, a wonderful local wildnerness park! read more

They don't allow pets which is disappointing as we hike with our dogs very often. We've never attended a park that rejected pets. If anything, the parks provide dog bags and encourage you to pick up after your pets to keep the park clean. read more

Be alert as the entrance is a little bit hard to spot coming down the road and easy to pass up. Seems to be a highly used trail area. I came during lunch and although there were several empty spaces to park, the parking lot was pretty full. As I was on my lunch break, I ate my lunch in my car and just did the short loop 3/10 of a mile. I can't speak of the whole trail system, but the part I did was quite enjoyable, very wooded, and full of birds and other wildlife.. it is a very nice area. if I lived in San Antonio, I would probably walk here in the evenings quite a bit. read more

Very cool park. They have 4 different levels of trails for you to make it as tough as you want. We went with the hardest trail and it wasn't hard, but was cool with some decent views. The only thing is I wish they had an accessible road to cut through the trail (it's closed to the public). So you can't really cut the hike short if anything goes wrong you have to continue the loop. read more

First time to this park the other day and not my last! We had a light rain during our entire hike, but it did not stop us. Many trails to choose from, but we accomplished the moderate 3 mile main loop, bosque loop, and vista loop trail this day. A covered picnic area with restrooms are near the entrance. The trail started off paved, but soon it became rocky and unpaved. Crossed many areas of steep step climbs and switchbacks. Large stone areas were very slippery due to the rain, so make sure to wear shoes with grip! Trail signage was well marked, but we relied on All Trails app to guide us. Came across many beautiful wildflowers, gorgeous hill scenery, lush green foliage/ forest, and loved listening to the birds chirping in the background. Plenty of parking and trails are well kept. Friedrich Wilderness Park has got a wide variety of trails within it. Tip: There's some exceptional signage here, so you won't have any problems finding your trail. There are quite a number of short trails here; some are also easy to walk on because they're relatively flat. It's not hard to string together enough short trails to go for a hike in excess of two hours. In the negative column, the views aren't very interesting, and the parking lot is often full. read more

It was a rainy, soggy day but that didn't stop our hike and it was fantastic! The temperature was nice and while we worked up a sweat, the light rain felt good. So many pretty wildflowers and views that pictures can't capture the same. We did a longer hike with lots of rocky terrain and plenty of elevation to climb. I'd definitely go back and do it again! If you go on a rainy day too, make sure you have proper shoes as the larger rock areas will be slick. read more

If you love hiking or being in nature this is where you need to visit. The trails go by levels 1-4 with 1 & 2 being wheelchair accessible. Signs are located throughout the trails so you don't get lost! I usually follow the main loop trail around! This park tends to get very crowded on weekends so prepare to possibly park on the side of the road. Enjoy the scenery! Now this is what hiking looks like! There's lots of trails here and if the weather is sunny and dry, it's perfect for hiking. Some parts of the trails give a beautiful glimpse of the mountains/landscape surrounding Texas. Additionally trails have labels to determine what your preferable level is based on elevation and steepness. Obviously I recommend the expert level since I'm an extremist when it comes to exploring. During my trip to see my brother in San Antonio, we went for hike on this park. It was close to 8 miles distance that we covered. The park offers a fantastic variety of smoothly paved and natural trails that goes through a forest. The trails are marked, making it simple to locate exits from any path whenever necessary. Whether you're seeking a lengthy hike or a brief stroll, the park provides options for all preferences. I appreciate this hiking destination, especially because it accommodates wheelchair users, which can be quite a rarity to find in parks. The extended main-level loop is wheelchair-accessible, but if you decide to tackle the Restoration trail, be prepared for a relatively steep incline. While not as challenging as some other trails I have taken, it could still make you tired if you're not accustomed to regular exercise. Nonetheless, the park boasts stunning scenery and is a truly beautiful location. There were good number of crowds that we see on the trails. It could be because it was a weekend. The pets are not allowed here. That looks like for a reason too as certain sections of the trails can be challenging to go along with pets. It depends upon which route you chose. read more

This park is just okay. There's always a wait to get in, it's super crowded, tons of back up and illegal parking along the street. I really don't understand what for. There's tons of parks that are way better than this and have prettier views. It's definitely a work out area not if you're just trying to casually walk/hike. They do have some cool windmills to look at but that's not something that's exciting for me to look at. One positive though is that it's completely shaded so you really don't have to worry about the sun blaring down on you or the heat much. We were cool and had a breeze the entire time with it being 85 degrees outside. Tip: GET HERE EARLY. We arrived at 6:45 AM and there were only 2 spots left to park. Also, look up the trails you want to do before hand, it's not marked the best on the trails. 90% of people weren't wearing masks and you do get close to others in tight spaces so keep that in mind if it's a concern for you. read more

This a great park to really get away and enjoy nature, but still not worry about getting lost in the woods or straying too far from a restroom. One thing I enjoy is that along a good portion of the trails, there is shade provided by the trees which is really needed during our hot Texas summers. Due to the number of trails options, you can come here for a casual stroll, or you can really challenge yourself. They offer paved, handicap accessible trails with guardrails, or more rugged trails that involve steeper inclines and walking up and down rock "stairs". I saw several people along the trial with walking sticks, and kind of chuckled at them, until I slipped and almost fell and was wishing I too, had a pair of those walking sticks. Besides getting in some cardio, you can see so much nature here! Many of the trees and plants (including poison ivy) are labeled along the trail. It has the common name, as well as the scientific name. Just in the time I was there I saw frogs, lizards, squirrels, birds, and heard some crazy sounding animal in the woods. Do watch your step for snakes and other wildlife along this trail though. Only complaint I have is the people who choose to hike/run with speakers blaring in the woods. Not everyone wants to hear your music...go buy some headphones. read more

The k my two downfalls for me is it doesn't allow dogs and the parking scene here is a absolutely awful. It is frequently super busy on the weekends so get here early and bring some patience. In contrast though, even when it's busy it doesn't feel that way on the trails I like the full trail including restoration. It's somewhat steep in some areas and very tree covered most the way. Yet another well-kept secret San Antonio Park (this one is actually a Wilderness Park). Located near The Rim, this is an awesome park to walk through the wilderness without driving for an hour. It includes several paved walking trails with benches along the path, but you can also go off the beaten path and try some more challenging trails. This was my first visit, so I stuck to the Main Loop Trail for the most part and although it had a few rocky inclines, it wasn't overly rugged. I'll try a more challenging trail next time. There are two working windmills pumping water that are cool for the kids to see. One of them is a short easy walk for the kids. The other one is way on the other side of the park - probably too far for the really little ones to get to. Make sure you have a QR code scanner on your phone before you go. They have marked LOTS of native plants and trees with QR codes, so you can find out more info about them. Some picnic tables, a pavilion, and a bathroom with running water near the parking area but don't expect anything after you get on the trail - take plenty of water! Free Wi-Fi also available at the main trailhead and in the common areas near the parking lot - kewl! No pets or bikes allowed and don't try and bring a stroller if you are going to get off of the paved trail. I saw someone carrying their stroller - it's just not possible to roll it because of the terrain. read more

This place is a hidden gem! We've lived in the San Antonio area for 20 years and until this past week, we had not heard of this place. When we heard about it, we decided to give it a try on Saturday. When we arrived we noticed there was parking up and down the street outside the park and anticipated we'd need to find a spot out there, but drove into the parking lot. We were fortunate to get the closest spot to the trails. That said, the parking area is too small for the park, so do plan to park on the street because that may happen. Once we got to the main area by the trail head we were pleased to see a number of different stations telling about the park; the plants; and a large map with lots of smaller information pamphlets and maps in boxes. We decided to take the longest loop, which was 3.5 miles once you get to it; it took about 1 - 1.5 miles on other trails to get to it. The trails are all well marked and they are also marked in terms of ease of accessibility for wheel chairs / strollers. We really enjoyed our hike - until the last part of the northern loop, you would never guess that this park is right next to a housing subdivision because you don't see or hear anything from it. The early portion of the trail has markers and signs for many of the different types of vegetation, which was nice. We were very impressed at how clean the park was - we did not see a single piece of trash during our entire hike, which was really a pleasant surprise! There is water and restrooms at the beginning of the trail head, but after that there is not, so just make sure to use the facilities and bring your water bottles. The trails were very nice, with a mixture of flat trails, somewhat steeper uphill trails and then some downhill trails, all of which were very well maintained. We saw an amazing diversity among all of the folks on the trial - old and young; male and female; athletic runners and not-so-athletic individuals - it was great to see so many different types of folks all enjoying this hidden gem on a beautiful Saturday!! read more

I love the trails but gave it four stars because pets aren't allowed. I am new to San Antonio and wanted to go for an easy and safe stroll. I arrived at noon on Martin Luther King Jr. Day. It was busy and I had park in the street since there was no parking in the lot. But I appreciated this as I was alone. BUT, TO THE TRAILS! I loved it. It was just what I needed. I had my choice of levels from beginner to expert levels. I kept it pretty easy and trailed behind big groups. I look forward to trying it out again and exploring a little more. read more

I just wanted to take a moment to update my review. Friedrich is still great. They opened a newish trail called restoration way. It's about a 3-mile loop, that connects to vista loop, just off the main trail. If you want a decent five(ish) mile trail run, try this: Counterclockwise Main Trail Loop -- upland range -- vista -- restoration way -- vista-- main loop. Sounds more complicated than it is but I included a picture of the Friedrich Trail map. You're only on the side trails for a brief period until you're either on the restoration or main loop trail. They are all marked, but I think park folks ought to make linkages clearer. Anyway, if you don't want to do the entire 3-mile restoration loop, there's a cutoff (mill pass) that'll cut down your mileage. In terms of quality, restoration way is excellent for running. So many trails in the SA area are super rocky which makes footing perilous. For the most part, restoration trail is well-packed, mostly dirt, with gradual inclines. It's a challenging run but not super difficult. A perfect mid-week maintenance run to break up the monotony road runs or greenway runs. One last thing I'll add. San Antonio's never ending sprawl has reached Friedrich. Back when I discovered Friedrich about 10-12 years ago, there was very little development in the Leon Springs area. Now it's one of the most rapidly growing parts of SA. You see this in terms of mixed use developments surrounding the park off I-10 and a new apartment complex. But you also see it in the subdivisions that are beginning to encircle the park. Indeed, the restoration trail shares property lines with some very lovely homes that didn't use to be here. And some of the views from park high points are marred by development out towards the Leon Springs area. It's a shame as it used to a secluded getaway inside the city limits. Pues ni modo. Oh, protip: on the weekends during spring/summer, go early. If it's past 9am, you'll be parking along the street in someone's yard. Weekdays are better but it can get crowded past 10am. read more

AMAZING! Friedrich Wilderness Park is truly a hidden gem in San Antonio. I am so glad one of my friends brought me here! I have been to many parks in San Antonio, but Friedrich Wilderness Park has started to become my favorite. There are 4 different types of trails you can try from easy to difficult. My past visits have been on the level 4 trails and they are awesome! They are little difficult to run on because​ of how heavy the terrain can get but perfect for a nice walk/hike. The level 4 trails can get slippery too and there are a lot of rocks you will have to either climb or walk down so bring proper shoes. I should also note how important it is to bring some type of water if you'll be out on the trails for a while. There were no areas along the level 4 trails to access water. I'm not too sure about the other trails, but I do recall seeing signs saying the same thing about bringing an ample amount of water. Along with making sure you bring water I do suggest maybe bringing a backpack with things you may need while you're out an about enjoying the trails, such as, sunscreen, bug spray, maybe even a small first aid kit in case of slips/falls especially if you're bringing​ children. Another thing to know before bringing​ your furry friend along there is a 'no pet' policy here. Other things to know about this park is that there is a small parking lot directly in front of the park, but if the lot becomes full you can park along the street directly across from the parking lot. There are also bathrooms at the beginning of the trails located next to the pavilion​. Through some of the trails at the beginning of the paths,​ you'll find some benches to rest. This is one of the best, if not, THE best hiking location in San Antonio, with 16 different trails ranging Wheel Chair Accessible to Very Difficult. If you take the Main Loop, there's a lookout point with beautiful views of the hill country! It's trails are peaceful and full of beautiful trees and animals. Unfortunately, dogs are not allowed, but it's for their safety. On the day after a rainy day, the Difficult trails are usually closed for safety reasons. My only qualm is that the bathrooms are dark, cold and sort of creepy. It's a great place to take visitors from out of town, and then you can have breakfast or lunch at one of the nearby restaurants at the Rim! read more

This is one of my favorite places to go! There are a ton of trails, all varying difficulty. You could literally spend a few hours here. Most of the trails are covered by gorgeous trees shading you from the harsh sun and even giving you a nice umbrella if it rains! There are a few spots that give you a nice view of the neighboring area. There are quite a few paved trails that are wheelchair accommodating and each trail has a helpful little sign explaining it's difficulty. I haven't taken any pictures, but I assure you, it's a little piece of heaven. Most of the people I have passed have had masks on but not everyone. Some of the trails are pretty narrow, so I wear my mask in case I run into anyone on the narrow spots where we are in close proximity. Parking is limited so you may have to park on the road if you get there while it's busy! It takes me almost a half hour to get here from where I live but I visit a few times per week, I love it that much! read more

If you're looking for a good workout/hike, I recommend to just stay right and hike the rim. This was my first time visiting and I was able to get a good taste of most of the trails by staying to the right at trail crossings. It kept me along the outer edge of the park and also helped ensure I didn't get lost! Staying right, you will hit the following trails, ranging from easy to difficult: Entry Trail Main Loop Juniper Ridge Fern Del Bosque Trail Vista Loop Restoration Juniper Barrens and Forest Range It took a group of 6 a little over 2 hours to hike the outer loop including a few stops for pics and such. I was told it was around 7 miles but I don't know. Definitely some good, rugged, and challenging portions that will keep your cardio up. It's good stuff! What else? Hmm, women's restroom is clean, come with code scanner as there are trees and plants marked, and shoes with good traction is a MUST! read more

We just moved to within 5 minutes of this park and I'm so thankful. Great hiking trails, a good, long, paved trail at the bottom but some great higher trails. Lots of shade on the lower trails. I went this week after a rain and many of the upper trails were closed but there were some beautiful little streams all around. For being right off of I-10, this is a hidden little gem. *there are signs about COVID and asking for distancing. Most people are careful to give space. My favorite hiking spot in San Antonio. It's not too far out from downtown, has decent tree coverage and a bunch of different length trails/loops. It's usually pretty popular but there's enough trails to keep to yourself. There actually is a little bit of elevation as well. If you do the largest trail you'll be out there for several hours so plan accordingly and take water! read more
