A Japanese buddy and myself were in the area for a friend's celebration of life nearby and decided to try this place out. WOW. We arrived and the lady checked us in and said they were cleaning a table for us. Well 15 minutes pass the place closes in 30 minutes. Two other parties come in after don't say a word and appear to definitely not have any reservations and are seated before us. No explanation at all. Mind you the place is now almost closing. So my recommendation is if you are not a regular don't waste you time with this place. We left and in 10 minutes already got our order in down the street at Gokigen Tori down the street without a reservation and first time at this establishment. We were treated with the respect and dignity that everyone should be treated with regardless of race or being regulars or not. Very disappointing experience. Do Not Recommend!!!! read more

Solid place for yakitori, with a menu that actually is more expansive than it looks at first glance once you take the time to read the whole thing. The mashed potato and mushroom in particular is just unusual enough to be a nice surprise, and the beef skewers are okay. Chef Yoshi and his staff are excellent and attentive. Just note it's pretty warm inside, which makes sense, considering a grill dominates the interior - but that's a definite consideration if you're an American used to A/C'ed comfort. The various grilled meat on skewers were delicious. The restaurant is not very big so you need to get there early to avoid a long wait and to get a parking space. The inside of the restaurant can get a bit smokey if you sit close to the area where the grilling is taking place. Service is slow and staff were not very responsive. I haven't been to this neighborhood spot in years and left thinking about everything I've been missing out on. Really nice meal in an unassuming strip mall. I called ahead on a Wednesday to make sure I'd have a spot at the bar. Highly recommend you call ahead so you don't run into any long waits to be seated, especially if you want a table. The skewers here are very solid. This is a traditional-style yakitori joint so don't come expecting fusion plates or wild ideas. They're serving up the classics over here and chef is attentive to every last skewer that leaves the grill. The skewers are actually larger than most around the city, so be careful not to over order! It takes a little while here to get through your meal as it's quite paced out and there's only so much room above the coals. I used the time between courses to watch chef do his thing and relax a bit. It really is quite meditative to watch him do his thing. Service is very friendly and attentive. I found the prices to be on par with what you're getting. Definitely worth a try if you're in the area and craving some skewers. read more

Kicking myself for growing up and living only a few blocks away my entire life and barely tried Sakura House last night. What a GEM! I have to start with the service. The ladies and Yoshi himself are the sweetest souls with a sense of humor. You really feel like family when you walk through those doors and they take hospitality to the next level. I haven't had service like this on the Westside in years and its the only kind you get when you go to a sweet mom & pop type shop like this. The food was outstanding. We ordered the spinach ohitashi, Yoshi's owari chicken, negima, beef with ginger miso, ribeye with spinach and shiso, shrimp maki, asparagus maki and shitake mushrooms. Everything was outstanding and grilled to perfection. We ordered a second round of negima and shrimp maki because they were soooo good!!! The restaurant tucked away in the corner of a strip mall along Washington with a small parking lot. Traditional japanese decor - nothing fancy, but you know you're gonna have an authentic Yakitori experience. We've determined already that we will be regulars here. Just had dinner at Sakura House for my 18th bday and it was perfect. My parents have been coming to Sakura House since before I was born so I've been eating here pretty much my whole life. I was literally born the night after my mom ate here lol so I obviously think the food is the BEST. Sakura House is a solid spot for yakitori and Japanese apps. They have a large Japanese grill near the center of the restaurant with bar seating if you like a view. About $6-7 per skewer. Decent quality though at times could be a tad too salty. But everything had a good cook to them. And the gyoza was a good filler as well. There's also an Asahi draft machine that gives out a perfect head of foam. Plaza can be tight and busy so you'll most likely need to park on the street (metered) parking. THIS IS ONE OF THE BEST RESTAURANTS IN LA!!! It's tragic it doesn't get more attention. Chef Yoshi is brilliant and cooks everything to perfection over his charcoal grill. The special chicken wings are LITERALLY THE BEST CHICKEN I'VE EVER HAD! We come here all the time for special occasions or just a great meal for a very fair price. I'd suggest our favorites (everything maki, the rib eye, yakitori, mashed potato stuffed mushrooms, etc) but you literally can't go wrong with anything on the menu. And the mocha custard is one of the best desserts I've had and I've had many three Michelin star desserts! Can't recommend this place more highly. Amazing food, amazing people, amazing value. I don't know what's up with some of these low star reviews... this is a very special place. It is also true that the waitstaff by and large are not native English speakers. There can be a lot of miscommunication. That is not, in my view, a reason to downgrade the restaurant; it is a reason to be careful and patient with communications. The food is wonderful, the staff lovely and helpful and responsive -- this has been a favorite place of our family's for decades. It is a very small dining room with short hours of operation.
