Extremely Disappointing, Humiliating, and Unacceptable Experience at Polo Ralph Lauren, Camarillo…read morePremium Outlets
We drove approximately two hours to Camarillo Premium Outlets to shop for our upcoming family cruise. What should have been an enjoyable shopping experience turned into an extremely frustrating, humiliating, and disappointing ordeal.
After nearly an hour of shopping, we selected eight sweaters: seven of the same style in different sizes and one of a different style. All eight were the same color. A store associate named Julio helpfully assisted us in finding the sizes, and we proceeded to checkout.
Just as the transaction was about to be completed, another employee informed the cashier, Alfonso, that we could not purchase all eight items because the quantity was supposedly too high. We were shocked. We were simply buying clothing for our family trip.
To accommodate the situation, we agreed to split the purchase into two transactions. The first bill was generated for five items, and we were prepared to purchase the remaining three separately using another card. Despite our willingness to cooperate, the interaction had already become uncomfortable.
We respectfully asked to see a written policy explaining this alleged purchase restriction. Instead of receiving a clear explanation, we encountered continued argument. The manager, Rick, directed us to the store's return-policy board, which did not clearly explain any purchase-quantity limit. When we questioned its relevance, he pointed us toward a separate sign stating, "We reserve the right to limit quantity on any purchase."
This was deeply concerning. Although we understand that retailers may enforce legitimate purchase limits, we were never shown a clear explanation of what specific restriction applied to our purchase of eight sweaters or why our transaction was being challenged. A general statement about limiting quantities does not explain how or why a limit was applied in our particular situation.
Feeling unfairly treated and receiving no satisfactory explanation, we ultimately decided to return the items we had purchased. We did not want to continue spending our money at a store where we felt unwelcome, singled out, and disrespected. It is extremely disappointing that a shopping trip for our family vacation ended with us returning our purchases.
We want to be clear: we respect a retailer's right to enforce legitimate policies, provided they are communicated clearly and applied consistently and fairly. Our concern is the lack of transparency, the manner in which we were treated, and the circumstances surrounding this incident.
We were left feeling that we may have been treated differently because of our skin color. We cannot know the staff's intentions with certainty, and we do not make this concern lightly. However, being challenged over an ordinary purchase, receiving no satisfactory explanation, and being directed to a general quantity-restriction sign understandably left us questioning whether we were treated fairly.
For transparency, we have attached the following documentation:
* The original purchase receipt.
* The return receipt confirming that we returned the items.
* A photograph of the return-policy board manager Rick directed us to.
* A photograph of the sign stating, "We reserve the right to limit quantity on any purchase."
We are providing this evidence so readers and management can review the relevant details themselves. We believe in transparency and stand by our account of what happened.
We traveled two hours, spent nearly an hour shopping, cooperated by agreeing to separate the transaction, and expected nothing more than the courtesy and respect every customer deserves. Instead, we left feeling embarrassed, hurt, and deeply disrespected.
This is not about demanding special treatment. It is about equal treatment, dignity, transparency, and accountability. A premium brand like Polo Ralph Lauren should uphold much higher standards of customer service.
We urge Polo Ralph Lauren and Camarillo Premium Outlets to investigate this incident, clarify the purchase-quantity policy, and ensure that any restrictions are applied consistently and without bias or discrimination. We expect a meaningful response addressing the conduct of cashier Alfonso and manager Rick, the alleged restriction, and how this situation was handled--not a generic apology.
We came prepared to spend our money on a special family trip. Instead, we left questioning whether we had been treated differently because of who we are. The fact that we chose to return our purchases reflects just how deeply this experience damaged our willingness to shop at this location.
This was unacceptable and far below the customer-service standards we associate with Polo Ralph Lauren. We deserve an explanation, and every customer deserves to be treated fairly, respectfully, and without discrimination.
