This is a park that looks haggard and weary under the summer sun. It's a brave and noble park and it's still standing, but it looks like it's wearing. The grass is still green, though, and I'm happy to report the grass is NOT greener on any other side of St Helen's Park. Namely, because there's no other grass. But if there was, I'm sure it wouldn't have withstood the sun's rays as well as this grass has.
The trees are tall and bountiful in leafage, which makes for very effective shade. There's a gazebo to cower under as well. You might not enjoy sitting on the grass too much, though. It's the prickly kind. But if you bring a picnic blanket (which is perhaps a bit excessive for a simple park strip) and a good spot of shade, you'll be fine.
As the review below suggested, though, this seems primarily the sort of place where dog owners come to show off their stock. It kind of makes me wish I had a dog, really. It's a great excuse to talk to people. Then again, I don't like people so much. Or dogs. Or prickly grass.
But gee wiz, if I did! Boy oh boy. read more
