Luckily for me, the L'Atelier de Joel Robuchon in Hong Kong is 3 Michelin stars and also affordable (relative to its reputation). I decided to come here for lunch with my wife as my first ever 3 Michelin star experience. I reserved a lunch reservation about a month in advance. The restaurant is very romantic and fancy. We were seated at a bar style counter, and we were escorted to our seats. The staff were all very attentive. Many were multi-lingual in Cantonese, Mandarin, and English. We ended up each ordering the lowest cost lunch tasting menu with one amuse bouche, one appetizer, one soup, one entree, and a dessert. We also each got a drink. I got a mocktail with lychee and mint which was an amazing palate cleanser between courses. The amuse bouche was a cracker with uni on top. The uni was very soft like Hokkaido uni and the cracker went well with the soft texture of the uni. We had a complimentary bread basket with a variety of different breads, all of which were amazing. I loved the croissants. For my own appetizer I chose the salmon caviar. I've never had that much caviar in my life in one sitting, it was amazing. My wife got the yellowtail carpaccio which was also amazing. The soup was a mushroom style soup with foam and a single matsutake mushroom. Soup was savory, rich, and a delight to the senses. We both got the pigeon entree. I'd never had pigeon before, my wife did but said she did not like it before. She loved this pigeon though, which was cooked slightly on the rarer to medium rare side. The pigeon was super soft. It was also wrapped with foie gras which made it decadent and rich. For dessert I chose coffee and also the coffee ice cream dessert with gelato, coffee crumble, and coffee jelly. Super rich but quite tasty. The coffee also came with a variety of small sweet snacks. Joel Robuchon truly lived up to its hype, and was well worth the cost. I will definitely come back.

It is one of the best croissant I have around the world. I love dessert. I was a bit disappointed when they change the Earl Grey Cream Dome to the new square version. The cake layer distribution in the new cube version is just now as good as the dome version. There are more cream than cake/chocolate ball crunch ratio. It is still good, I just prefer the dome version. I also tried their green tea red bean roll cake and that is not my cup of tea. Speaking of tea, I also tried their latte. Not my cup of tea again. It is below average for a latte drink. I mean it is better than Starbucks (and way better than McDonalds), but not up to the average latte level for a coffee shop. I could hand whisk a latte better than theirs, and given they have the machine... I have higher expectations. BTW I have been there 3 times during my Hong Kong visit, and by the 3rd time, they have a promotion where basically the drink combo is like HKD$20 cheaper (roughly). Not a driving force for me to buy their drink. I will opt'ed for the drink downstairs instead. Service is great. I will return.

They're knowledgeable and will recommend the specialties of the house. Food emphasizes on French cuisine. Starters include French Gilardeaux oysters, torteaux and steamed mussels. The soup of the mussels is especially delicious. Seafood is very fresh. Don't miss out on the soups which include classic onion soup and lobster bisque. The mains include confit de canard, lamb Wellington, Holstein rib eye and kurobuta pork chop. All of those dishes are great, cooked to perfection. If you're into pasta try the fettuccine with boneless of tail. If you have room there's a good selection of classic French desserts. This place is highly recommended and it's really good value for money.

I will come back here just to order this. Chicken is really tender and juicy and the asparagus is cooked perfectly as well. For dessert I had the apple tart. This is ok and wouldn't really recommend. Other than the mutton at Bowrington Road's Hot Food Centre this is probably the best lamb dish I've had in HK thus far. Full bar was there, but I only had wine. To roundup: Great concept, awesome service and decent pricing scheme. I'm a fan!

I knew there's a restaurant on Hollywood Road that my friends had been recommending to me. I didn't put two and two together, which was a nice surprise when I was there. Stood at the front door for 30 seconds figuring out how to open the door, we found the button 5 seconds before it was too embarrassing. Pretty neat by the way, blended well with the rest of the street. Greeted by the staff leading down the stairs, "Obey the Giant" was there staring at you making you feel very excited already. Oh and there was a mini sculpture from Koons, a skull by Hirst, a wall print of Le Fifre by Manet (which I suspected to be from Banksy), a graffiti by André, and the Princess Peach by The Invader. A few calligraphy graffiti by Tsang Tsou Choi 曾灶財 even. If you love arts, you will fall in love with this place already. You'd have noticed how the restaurant and the menu were inspired by La Compagnie Generale Francaise de Tramway, the original company resided at this very same address at 1930s. They didn't oversell it though, so it was a nice touch to have. We had a 5 course dinner menu to share and a daily special. Foie gras, slow-cooked eggs with crab cake, red snapper, etc. They were all way too good but as they keep rotating the dishes, it wouldn't be the most helpful telling you how they tasted anyway. Trust your servers' recommendations, if anything helps. (Looking back I don't even think I've ever rated any restaurant six stars just because of the food). What was worth the extra start was service here, which was top notch to say the least. Both myself and my partner noted that they had two different servers to recommend to us the food and the wine respectively, and each of the dishes was served by a different server. We kept looking at the arts around us during the dinner, and a server came by and offered to give us a short intro to each of the arts (which we eventually didn't have the time, but that's beyond the point). We also casually chatted up with the last server who served us the dessert. He asked if it's any occasion we chose to have a dinner here, and we answered, "Yeah, not a biggie but just a cheeky celebration of [something personal]." He later, as a surprise, gave us extra set of sweeties with a candle and the "Happy [something personal]!" written on the dish. We went over the moon. Will definitely come back, maybe to try their branch some time. (And if the manager sees this review, please let me know if Le Fifre was Banksy's work!)

Must say, I was rather disappointed. The only 2 dishes that we thought were actually Michelin worthy might be the Aka uni. Cauliflower. Lobster. Royal Cristal caviar. Etc. dish and the mango. Golden pineapple. Curry. Black fermented kumquat. Coconut cream dessert. The other dishes ranged from normal good to unmemorable. Perhaps comparing it to French Laundry is crazy, but it's really hard not to compare when they're both 3 star Michelin restaurants and the price is comparable. The ambiance was on point. However, service was mixed depending on the server and honestly... I've had better service at 1 star/ 2 star Michelin restaurants. In terms of service I'll just mention what I recall (they're nice overall, but...): 1) we found a piece of glass on my sister's place mat. They attributed it to the centre piece which we find utterly laughable, but sure, whatever excuse they want 2) while we were taking photos they came into the frame a few times. French laundry was much better... invisible when not required and visible immediately when needed 3) gave us the bill while we were still eating and asked us to leave early cause they need to close up for break before dinner service. I missed the exact wording as I was in the restroom but absolutely unacceptable. Never in a million years have we ever had any Michelin star restaurant do this to us 4) there were times when the staff didn't clear the dishes and gave us the next dish. There should never be clutter on the table where it takes away from the seamless experience 5) it was a nice touch that they gave us a Mother's Day cake to pack to go but they failed to mention that it needs to be eaten immediately or refrigerated within 2.5 hrs. Yes... they had a note on the cake box in font size 12. But a normal 3 star or even 1 star Michelin would mention it verbally too 6) them telling us that their kitchen is closed so they can only give us a doggy paper bag and not a box to pack our madeleines to go. I've contemplated giving this place a 2 star review, but I also don't think their food is bad... just not sure ALL their food AND service is Michelin worthy. 2 words. Thoroughly disappointed.

(This review was also posted in https://www.yelp.com/biz/amigo-restaurant-香港)…read more In our recent trip to Hong Kong, my husband suggested checking out the Amigo Restaurant.  I did a little research and found this restaurant pretty interesting.  Although it has a Spanish name and the mansion was built in Spanish style, with olden Spanish décor throughout, Amigo serves classic French cuisine. This iconic restaurant was founded in 1967, and was moved to the present mansion in 1976, being in the same address for half of a century.  Amigo remains a renowned upscale dining destination in Hong Kong.  Upon arrival, we were promptly led upstairs to the opulent dining room.  A retro-pop trio were already belting out lovely classic pop songs decades old.  The 3 of us had a spacious table close by the trio.  I could tell these 3 Filipino musicians were very experienced and were perfect in all the songs that they performed. They went on to serenade tables that were celebrating special dates. Later on they came to us who were just there checking out. They politely asked us to select songs. My husband suggested something upbeat and cheerful. They sang "I love you more than I can say". That was unexpected and made us laugh. I later requested "Love Me Tender" by Elvis. The singer did a great job and purposely changed the lyrics towards the end. It was very enjoyable and fun. Although male clients were no longer required to wear suits, all of their serving team (all men) were still wearing tuxedos and white gloves. And most dishes were prepared tableside. Some of their waiters have been working there for decades. Now onto the food. There were 2 set dinner menus to choose from, we opted for a 4-course dinner that cost more, HK$1,380.00 (US$178) plus 10% service charge per person, but with items that sounded enticing to us.  There were 3 choices of the first course, both my husband and I chose Seared Foie Gras with Baby Burgundy Pears and Figs.  Our daughter went with Scottish Smoked Salmon and Tuna, Green Pea and Caviar.  For the soup course, all 3 of us chose Cream of Abalone and Fish Maw Chowder instead of the Classic Ox-Tail Soup.  Then, we were served a citrus sherbet to cleanse our pallets before we enjoyed the mains.  For the mains, I went with Grilled New Zealand Lamb Chops with Garlic, Rosemary and Parsley.  My husband picked Australian Lobster Thermidor (half piece), Beef Mignon, with Green Peppercorn Sauce.  Daughter selected Saikyo-Yaki Chilean Seabass, Grilled Asparagus.  All 3 of us picked Glazed Mango Crème Brulee as our dessert course.  Mango in Crème Brulee was a nice touch.  All the dishes were delicious.  My lamb chops were tender and had the perfect flavor.     The 4-course included coffee or tea at the end of the dinner.  Although the nervous young waiter poured a bit too much cream into my coffee, I was surprised to find the coffee was still rich and strong, more like a good latte.  Other drinks were not included.  A bottle of still mineral water was HK$80 (US$10), my husband and daughter each had a glass of Chardonnay, HK$360 (US$46).  My glass of Dancing in Wonderland, HK$90 (US$12), recommended by the manager, was like a Virgin Pina Colada.  However, I would like the latter better than the Wonderland drink that's milk heavy. The included bread was very good. One piece was warm and soft; another thin piece was light and crispy. At the end of the dinner, they brought out the complimentary chocolate balls with ice cream inside, presented with dry ice. That was a very nice touch too. Service was impeccable as expected. The manager even happily took photos for us with our smart phone and old-school flash camera. Towards the end of the dinner, they gave my daughter and me each a long stem red rose, how sweet. The final tab was HK$5,237.00 (US$676), that included HK$100 that my husband included as an appreciative gesture. (In Hong Kong, you don't need to tip when there is a 10% service charge).  However, with this price point (US$225 per person), there are a lot of choices in Hong Kong.  We did enjoy the experience a lot, especially the happy serenading of songs at the table.  However, there was no pleasant surprises or innovation in the food to us.  I felt like we had stepped back in time.  Maybe everything was too traditional to me?  I understand that in the 80s Amigo was a tip-top luxurious restaurant in Hong Kong, and over the decades it attracted many celebrities to visit.  Patrons used to make reservations 3 months ahead of time.  Now, we only made our reservations 2 days ahead.  My daughter is social media savvy and she had never heard of Amigo.  I like the restaurant, but I don't know how long it could sustain if it could not attract the younger generations.  I am feeling nostalgic and a little sad.  I am glad that we went to Amigo and enjoyed it, though.  It is like a piece of Hong Kong history that we will not forget.

Unlike most fancy restaurants in Hong Kong, this is one of those rare ones where I didn't feel like I got ripped off! I guess there are good reasons why this restaurant has been open since the 1960s. The experience begins as soon as you get near the front entrance and have the doors opened for you. They bring you upstairs to your table, and you are greeted with personalized notepads with your name on it (given during reservation). The decor is classy and simple. Its feels like you stepped into a old wooden cabin inside. There are some antiques around, and each table even has a beautiful fresh flower centerpiece. Came here for a birthday and we ordered the four course dinner set, which I selected the foie gras, shrimp soup, fillet of beef, souffle for dessert, and coffee. Before the main you are served some fruity ice cream to cleanse your palette. And you also get some chocolate covered ice cream balls after you've finished all your meal, right before you leave. The food was fantastic and I definitely don't have any complaints about it whatsoever. Throughout the meal there is even a wonderful 3 person band that goes around each table singing and playing music. When you get to your table you can make any requests for them, and I was pretty impressed they know so many songs! Current and old, these guys are pretty amazing and sounded great. Back to the experience; how do they make it a truly unique experience? By giving a whole mini birthday cake (rather than just a slice)! I was pretty surprised, as I thought they would give the typical cake slice for a birthday celebration. NOPE they went above and beyond your typical customer service by giving you a whole mini birthday cake. To top that off they brought it out by having the 3 person band sing happy birthday to you. Not only that but the ladies in the house also get a rose to go. Have only been here once, but it hands down became my favorite restaurant for special occasions. It is truly a special dining experience and I highly recommend it.
