if you have kids and want to use the pool at this location - do yourself a favor and don't. they have two pools but regular folks only get access to the small one and even then there is only about a 12x12 area that the kids are even allowed in. The lifeguards then laughably over-police the tiny space. (think Jim Carrey in SNL over-policing the hot tub) The basketball hoop set up makes no sense. Hoops mismatched and courts mis-aligned. Absolute waste of time to visit this location. read more

The men's locker room, leading up to the pool is sooooo gross They allow people to wear shoes through the showers, up the stairs and on the pool decks! The black (mold?) all over...and the smell are awful. The family pool is kept above 87 degrees and the air temperature is way hotter. Maybe that's good for some people? The competition pool is kept at 81 plus degrees but feels cool when you get since the air temperature is so much higher. If you want to work out in any of those pools....good luck breathing. The competition pool has some really gross stuff growing on the bottom and the water is very salty. I believe salt comes from sweat and urine!? I suspect a mass cleaning is coming since a big swim meet is going to happen soon. They should want to avoid the embarrassment. read more

A few months ago the staff decided to turn music on in the fitness and weight lifting area. But it is very loud, especially in the weight area. Complaints were made to staff who told us that management did not care, a letter to the editor fo the local newspaper was made because of a lack of response from the management and additional complaints continue to be made. Yet, Sage YMCA DOES NOT CARE! The music is so loud that even with headphones you can hear it and one can no longer listen to audiobooks. There is no good reason to play music on the PA. People that want to listen to music bring their own. It is just loud and disturbing. The ironic thing is that if a member were playing music they would be in violation of the loud music policy, but the staff exempts itself from a policy that it hold paying member to! Join another gym, Sage YMMCA does not care about you or your experience! read more

It's become extremely over crowded in the last 3 years since Northwestern Medicine bought HealthBridge and closed their facility with 4 pools in Crystal Lake. It's a beautiful facility, but with summer day camp and management scheduling outside groups for half hour swims, it's nearly impossible to get in the swimming pool classes for arthritis water exercise, water aerobics, etc. Sadly, the over-crowding has made the family pool practically inaccessible. read more

I got a pass by default "cough" thanks hb I really needed a warming pool that works glad you found a happy medium. I like this facility. I use to go to this YMCA back when I was kid before it was sage. I love what they've done to it. In the old pool area there is a Jacuzzi that gets to a good temp. I love windows. I feel like I'm on veranda looking outside and getting some sun light. Very relaxing. I love that. its so important in the winter to get that dose of sun light. Plus who doesn't want to look at snow when your sitting in a hot tub? There is also a steam room and sauna. I didn't check out the sauna. Not a fan of co ed saunas no offense guys, but I don't want to sit in a room and sweat with my clothes/swimsuit on its gross. And puts bacteria in them that could cause odors or illness if not bleached. I did check out the steam room ;) it was awesome. The room was well lit there was lots of seating. The temperature was awesome. The old competition pool is now a warm excercise pool. YES!!! Please kept at 89* please give me more. I didn't go for a dip.I didnt have time sadly BUT next time I'm there you bet I will be going for a run in it. I was too excited about the much needed jaccuzi its been months since ive been in one. They have a new cold lap pool . But it being cold I didnt jump in but it looks nice. My only really issue is I got lost going back to the girls locker room. Don't ask me how I did this. read more

My wife and I have been members of the Sage Y for a little more than a year, having transferred over when Healthbridge was shut down at the end of 1022. We regard the facility to be well run, well staffed and well equipped. We are swimmers, super seniors requiring warmer waters, and have passed on a few suggestions on pool management, directly to Sage. The friendliness and competence of staff is maybe the most distinguishing aspect of the Sage experience. read more

I have been going to this YMCA off and on for eight years. When my son, who had no trunk support, needed to pass a swim test for Scouts BSA he took lessons with Yuka. She was extremely patient and wonderful with him. Now that he's older we have been working out in the fitness room. All the staff that I have encountered have always been helpful and kind. My other teenage son even meets his friends up here and plays with them in the basketball court and ping pong area. I have also enjoyed the group exercise classes with Yuka and Chris. I would definitely recommend this place to everyone. Since my kids are older I find that we can take more advantage of what the YMCA has to offer. read more

The Y is not what it use to be. I called a week ago to get clarification on the age policy to use the fitness equipment and never received a response. I was told one thing when I rejoined and learned several months later that I must have been told the wrong thing. With Healthbridge closing you are just a number. read more

This place has recently been remodeled and it looks fantastic from a guest perspective. Once a member things look a bit differently. One of the biggest attractions to this particular YMCA is the pool. Good luck finding time to get to the pool without the swim club taking up all the lanes. This isn't really brought up at all during orientation. During swim club the locker rooms are full of kids yelling and screaming. More move often that not, they kids are unsupervised. The weight and cardio rooms are decent. I can get a machine at just about any time. There's wifi available and the atmosphere is comfortable. I just can't get over the inconvenience with the pool issue. read more

I can't believe that I'm actually giving this YMCA 5 stars. I grew up in Crystal Lake and took swim lessons at this YMCA many years ago as a kid. When I moved away for college I joined a YMCA out of state, but I occasionally found myself using this facility while in town to visit family for the holidays. The place always seemed like a dump but I never really had any other options when visiting. The tired and run down structure was rivaled only by the beat up equipment housed within. However, much to my surprise, I entered the YMCA today (Christmas Eve of 2015) to find that this place has been transformed into an amazing facility! They've done so many incredible renovations that I hardly recognized the place! They now have a huge cardio room full of tons of brand new machines, a large weights area, beautiful interior/lounge spaces (though I've never really understood the point of these at gyms, they still look nice), wonderful locker rooms, and even a smoothie bar. Bravo, CL YMCA. Thanks providing an affordable but luxurious workout area for those of us who can't shell out the $100+/month premiums your competitors charge. read more

I am not a big work out person... I don't even like it a little bit, but the Y definitely makes it easy to get in there and shake your booty!! Personally the best thing about this place is the Zumba classes. Mandi the instructor makes it so exciting every Tuesday and Thursday night. You do not need to know how to dance, you just need to know how to have fun! The only problem I have with the Y is some of the people who go there. I think it is common knowledge to wipe down a machine that you just used (even if you aren't that sweaty), but most people I've seen use the arm and leg weight machines do not wipe it down at all! It is very discouraging and gross to walk up to a machine covered in someone else's sweat. I wish some people could learn proper gym etiquette but for now I'm just wiping each machine before I touch it. read more

I like the pool, but men have to go to the locker in the basement and then back upstairs to the pool. There really isn't a walking / running track - there is space in the gym, but good luck when people are playing basketball. The daycare is nice if you have kids. This is really a great place for families to spend time, exercise, and socialize. The YMCA in Crystal Lake had been on the skids for many years. I'm not sure why but it seemed to be neglected. Some folks from Sage Products got involved with the place (thus the name Sage YMCA) and are really trying to turn things around. They are making structural changes to the building as we speak, they are adding new programs all the time, and they are really starting to host some very interesting, family friendly events. For example, a few weeks ago they had Martellius Bennet from the Bears signing autographs to get folks to donate toys for tots. The Y in CL is a place that has been forgotten but is now on the upswing. Great for families and family time. Reasonably priced compared to other gyms in the area. Needs some improvements: the pool deck and locker rooms are very slippery and have puddles everywhere. I'm afraid that I may slip and fall. The locker room floors are dirty with used masks on the floor and a shortage of hand soap and towels. Also, the lockers don't work-it will never lock. I have to bring all my belongings into the pool with me. read more

I love this place. I have found the staff is always friendly and helpful. I've used the personal trainers and they are great. I like that there is a very diverse crowd - young, old, fit, not so fit but working on it, much more ethnically diverse than I see in other gyms. There is a very positive vibe here- supportive of getting healthier no matter where you are starting out. I have shopped around a lot and belonged to other gyms over the years. This place has been transformed! It's gorgeous, modern, full of creature comforts and great programs, and is a model for YMCA of Metro Chicago. After a year and a half of construction, philanthropists Pat and Vince Foglia (he's co-founder of Sage Products in Cary), along with civic leaders and the Chicago Y organization raised $18 million for the expansion and renovation of Sage YMCA (used to be called the McHenry County Y -- and was rescued from near bankruptcy by those mentioned above). Additions to the Sage Y include a brand new 8-lane, 25-yard competition pool that will be used by area high school swim teams and the Sage Y Piranhas. A gorgeous new Fitness Wing with all new machines and equipment, a brand new Pre-School wing with licensed full-time preschool in three beautiful newly furnished classrooms, an enclosed outdoor playground, designated and secure entrance and drop off for parents, three new fitness/wellness studios, plus a new whirlpool, sauna and steamroom (amenities that I've been wishing for for years). This Y is absolutely stunning and the new classes that they've introduced to members really show that the team leading this Y are on top of their game. What's more, the YMCA of Metro Chicago doesn't turn away anyone, based on their ability to pay. Families can get scholarships for preschool and other programs. I can't say enough about how much I love this Y (I'm a member, and have been for years). The facility is new, and expanded. But that's all you can say that's positive. The night staff in particular acts like they are doing you a favor by having open gym for volleyball, etc. Individuals pay $55 a month; families $80. You'd think that they'd "get" that these little additional programs are the only thing that differentiates them from Planet fitness, that charges $10 per month. My recommendation - just go someplace else. Everything the Y offers is offered elsewhere, often better and cheaper, and by facilities with staff that actually care and try to treat members like the paying customers they are. read more

So very sad for my children and all the other swimmers that were made to believe the Y was working on a way to get the team back in the water safely during COVID-19 when all along it was never an intention. No communication from the Y to coaches, swimmers and families throughout the whole shutdown in regards to the fate of the team. And when I asked Jordan when we'd be back in the water he told be by mid/late July or sooner. LIE! The team is no longer. They also have yet to return banquet money to members. I can't say enough how very devastating this is to our community and children that have already lost so much. Now their sport, swim families, coaches, mentors, friends, and support systems has been torn away from them. Shame on you! read more

I joined this YCMA in 2016 because of the terrific exercise options they offered for seniors. Sadly, these classes were cancelled in January, 2017. These classes were consistently full and made profound differences in the physical health of those who persisted. One class was so full that you had to line up by 7:15am in order to get in the 8am class. It was always full, some members were even turned away because there were a total of 22 seats available. When we learned that this class was cancelled, we were told that there were other classes were available senior members. Most of us tried these other classes, only to find that they were too advanced for us. So now, what are we left with? Nothing, we are left with nothing. Many people have talked to the administration to no avail. This Y is not serving this important part of the community. It smacks of ageism at its worst. read more
