The Long Version: My husband and I got takeout from The Hot Wok for dinner when we were staying in Perth. All their food is packaged as takeout, but they do have seating where you can eat your takeout food, just no table service. We decided to take the food back to our hotel room instead. We got the Bang Bang Chicken ($18.25) and the Shrimp Pad Ki Mow ($19.50). I called my order in and we walked there to pick it up. I was told it would take about 30 minutes to be ready. (They make everything to order.) We arrived after 30 minutes and our food was ready as promised. The lady on the phone was very courteous and I think she was the same lady at the pickup counter. The Bang Bang Chicken was listed on the menu as "Lightly breaded chicken tossed in a creamy honey sauce, on a bed of greens." It did not mention sesame seeds were sprinkled on top and I forgot to say "no sesame seeds" with my order so I was a bit disappointed that I couldn't really eat this dish, but that was on me. I was able to manage a few bites that didn't have sesame seeds on them (I can handle mild contamination) and I found the meat a bit dry, but the outside was pleasantly crispy and the honey sauce was pleasant. The "bed of greens" was actually raw shredded cabbage and carrots in a creamy sauce. I was asked how spicy I wanted this dish and I said medium, but it wasn't spicy at all, like not even mildly spicy, lol. Don't worry, the food didn't go to waste, as my husband ate it. The dish came with a small serving of steamed white rice. The rice was good, not too mushy nor too dry. The Shrimp Pad Ki Mow was tasty, albeit a tad too oily for me. It had 6 large shrimp, which were all properly deveined. They were plump and juicy. The dish also had broccoli, cauliflower, onions, carrots and Bok Choy. I was happy to see they were very generous with the vegetables. You have the option of having this dish with rice noodles or rice, I chose the noodles since that's what traditional Pad Ki Mow is. However, the noodles used were rather thin, like even thinner than traditional Pad Thai noodles. I like the wider noodles that typically come with Pad Ki Mow (or as I usually know it as, Pad Kee Mao). I was also asked what spice level I wanted this dish and I also said medium, and for this dish, it was a true medium as it had a spicy kick to it. It came back.... still had onions in it. The cheeseburger and onion rings came with no onion rings, fries instead. The grilled cheese came with no cheese. It looks like cheese might have once been on the bread, but later removed. It was truly the most perplexing. I love to support local restaurants but this isn't the first disappointment from them (last time we were told we didn't read the menu correctly despite doing exactly that), and this time just sealed the deal that we will be unable to return unless there is new management and a better cook. From the moment we arrived, it was clear the night was headed downhill. The greeter welcoming guests to this "special" evening had massive underarm sweat stains, which set the tone nicely. Inside, the dining room was so cramped it felt more like a waiting room than a celebratory restaurant. Service was abysmal. It took 95 minutes for our entrées to arrive -- an astonishing delay for a fixed New Year's Eve menu. When the food finally did show up, it wasn't worth the wait. The dishes were poorly executed and completely forgettable, making the premium pricing feel almost insulting. Attention to detail was clearly not a priority. One nearby table had red wine stains on the tablecloth, and instead of changing it, staff seated another party there before finally addressing it. Nothing says fine dining like dried wine stains and indifference. To their credit, the restaurant did attempt to remedy the situation -- after the damage was done. We were offered a gift card to return, which honestly felt absurd. After an evening like that, why would anyone willingly come back for round two? What should have been a festive New Year's Eve turned into a lesson in mismanagement and poor standards. This is not a restaurant we would ever recommend, especially for special occasions -- unless disappointment is part of the plan.
