I take a look at the Sean Hannity collection, and a plaque from America's Most Wanted which I can only assume is because they filmed something here. Melancholy has crept into my brittle bones, binding tightly like deep roots I know all too well. "We're here on a trip, I called you last night about a card." I have found myself in a place I never thought I would this year, as well as in a place I didn't think I would stand. The flow of time made it otherwise. "Oh!" The man behind the desk exclaimed. "You must be Joe." My dad placed his hand on my shoulder. "Yep! And this is my son." I snap to and release my gaze from the random picture of Sean. "Hey. Nice to meets you." I put my hand forward to give out one of those famous cold hard American handshakes. My dad and the man continue to talk. My mind began to drift off, staring aimlessly at the jackalope in front of me. I wonder what life for it must have been like, scary probably. After my dad and the man settles up we hop into his truck and head out to the lease, we have a bit of grief getting and celebration to do today. ---------- [12ish Hours Earlier] After a confusing hour or so, my dad and I unload his truck for a rousing Father and Son Hunting Trip. You may think this would be an event I'd hate, on former occasions you'd probably be right. Not so much this time. "I bring ALL the guns in right? It would be a dumb thing to leave them in the truck, right?" The look on my fathers face tells me my joke didn't land the way I thought it would. We get ready for bed because we got a big morning ahead of us. While my dad was on a witch-hunt for the card I was able to sneak a few hits in before the evening ended. "Do you have anything you want to watch?" My dad shrugs and kind of waves me off. I land on an episode of The Simpson's. Some minutes fly by. "Hey, Dad..." "Yes, Son." "Do you believe in aliens?"[1] Some more times passes. We see the family have a struggle on the tv. "I have so much more to worry about on this physical world that I don't have time to care about what happens above it." fair enough. Shortly after we turn off the show, and lay down to rest for the night. I took the bed opposite of how mine is paired back at my house, somehow it feels familiar, like all the random beds I've slept in over the years. The mattress is less giving then the ones back home, for the better, I don't think I need to get used to this. Maybe my dad is right, the physical world is more important than myself.[2] ---------- [1] "I mean, you'd be dumb if you thought we were the only living sentient beings in this Galaxy." [2] "Some say that depersonalization is a form of enlightenment, but not all enlightenment is equal."

The biggest problem was apparent dishonesty by the young man in the office. When asked about the breakfast advertised, he assured us there would be biscuits and gravy, pastries, cold cereal, and juices. In the morning - all they had was bad coffee. Nothing else. The young man in the office said they had a problem with a delivery. There were appliances there like a big multi-cereal dispenser, but no present breakfast. The second bit of low credibility was when we were looking for the ice machine and he indicated there had been an electrical problem the previous night and the machine was not currently working --but considering Sara C's review pic from Feb 2025 -"Out of Order. Across the Street Ice Machine Working" -I wonder if this is a continuous problem rather than a glitch from the night before. There were a few other problems: * The deadbolt was inoperable. The door seemed warped out of alignment and no amount of pushing or wrestling the door up or down allowed the dead bolt to engage. (We were tired, it was late, and we didn't feel like demanding a new room so we piled luggage next to the door as an alarm.) * The swimming pool was partially filled with brownish-green stagnant water. I remember the pool being out of service on a previous stay here, but don't remember if it was in this sad shape both of our previous visits. * One of the lights by the bed was burned out or otherwise nonfunctioning. The "Hotel" is situated conveniently on the highway we were traveling on, but we will look elsewhere if and when we are driving through Vernon again.

Oh well - I don't hold it against the hotel at all. The reason I'm not maxing out the 5-star scale is the lackluster breakfast. Overcooked scrambled eggs and biscuits, watery gravy, completely out of bacon - yes, these are first-world problems, but I've stayed at dozens of Holiday Inn Expresses that didn't have these issues. Breakfast aside, it was a good stay, and I would stay here again.

Penny, the front desk clerk when we checked in, is absolutely amazing. I even sent up a compliment to corporate so if the general manager reads this , please acknowledge you have a fantastic employee and she needs to be appreciated. She's like your grandma!!! And she kept mentioning the hot breakfast and we are looking forward to it even though it's just going to be the standard fare but Penny made it sound like the best breakfast in the state. The rooms were spacious, bright, and clean. We love the way soap is provided even though it doesn't smell the best but certainly cuts back on single use plastic. The room smelled fresh and updated. My only question is why the pot and oven mitt in a room that doesn't have a stove. Finally, the pool was open. We were promised a pool o Fort Worth but it was broken. The pool room was really warm. The hot tub was a little too hot but the pool was a good temperature. And all chairs were lounge chairs. They even provided wipes to clean before and after use. I can't ask for more. If I were to ever pass through again and need a room, I would go out of my way to stay here. Keep up the good work!!

Apparently the rave reviews are from when the motel was owned by someone else…read more... I'm going to try really hard to be kind because the owners seem like good people, but I also have to be brutally honest. I'm not sure how this place is getting 5 star reviews. The owners described it as a "working man's motel", and I understand that. If you're truly looking for an inexpensive place to lay your head, this place is fine I guess? But if you're looking for any kind of comfort, you'd be better off finding an Airbnb in the area. We honestly would have been more comfortable camping.... The pictures on hotels.com, etc, are misleading. They make it seem much nicer than it is. The overwhelming scent of Fabuloso can't hide the fact that the floors are dirty (the picture is my socks after walking around for a few hours) and there are holes in the walls. We were only given one towel, the tv picture was fuzzy and the remote didn't work. The refrigerator was dirty and sticky inside. Uncomfortable mattress with springs poking out, and flat pillows. The description also states that they serve breakfast from 6-9am. There was no breakfast. If that was something that needed to be arranged beforehand, that needs to be stated in the description. The only reason I gave it more than one star is because it was very affordable, and I'm sure the owners work very hard, but if you don't have the resources to properly maintain a motel, you should probably go into another line of business.
