Safeway was my grocery store for a year when I lived in Concord. I went there once a week. It had everything unlike Trader Joe across the street from my apartment. One day I had a craving for strawberry rhubarb crumble. I went with my friend to Safeway to see if they had any rhubarb. When I couldn't find it, I asked the produce guy and he directed me to a booklet which stated which fruit/vegetables were in stock and when. Turns out that rhubarb is only in season from April to September. I think I was looking for it in the month of February. We ended up going home empty handed. And now I'm craving that sweet and tart red staining crumble. Rhubarb is really good. It's so much better than celery. You can't make dessert out of celery. Celery is rhubarb's evil twin. read more

I visit the store on a Friday at 7pm: PRIME TIME! So I just need a few items and look forward to using the new "self-serve checkout machines." But they are backed up AND there's only three other checkers and one of them is a 15 items or less and the lines are really long. Some shoppers are bringing full carts to the machines and then need much assistance from the staff to help them. If these machines are meant to reduce employee expense, they are also creating longer check-out times. Is this the NEW NORM?? I know other big box stores are moving to these machines as well. Next thing you know, we won't need money; we'll just walk into the stores with our personal, hand-held shopping assistant the size of a matchbox. Each product will have radio frequency chip that broadcast a signal that's picked up by our receiver as we walk out of the store and the total will be deducted from our Special Store Account connected to our Bank Account. This review is not targeted at the store in general but the self checkout area only. Overall I would rate the store 3 stars since there is really nothing unique about it, it's a generic Safeway. The lady running the Self Checkout needs to take a serious lesson on customer service and what you're not suppose to do while on the job. I've had two extremely bad encounters with her to the point where I have to write this review on a grocery store for god sake. The first time, I was doing a checkout and noticed one price seemed a little off from what I saw. I asked for assistance and she came up like I just ruined her spa session, "what do you need" she says. I tell her my concern, and tells one of her coworkers to watch the stand while she checks the price. She came back telling me that I was wrong and that I have to pay that price. I shrug it off and after check out, I walk back and check the price, lone behold I was right and that she had lied to me, and don't forget with the annoyed attitude while telling me. The price difference was $5 so at the time I thought to myself, there is no point in making a fuss so I let it go. Second case happened tonight! I avoided the self checkout since I saw she was there again. So get my groceries and walked over to the counter area to eat my sushi, then out of the corner of my eye, I see her on her knees, under her podium, chatting into her cell phone, loud enough that I even could hear it. There was even customers using the machines while she was doing it, I was so astonished at the sight I even got a picture. Unfortunately the picture was of her after she closed her little cubby where her cell phone was. So overall this is the epitome of bad customer service. read more

Having needed to use the men's room here, I can say I'll never shop at this grocery store again. The toilet paper for use was sitting on the floor. The paper towel dispenser sitting on the changing table. The room itself not clean. And it's right next to the produce - inviting those with unwashed hands to go out and immediately fondle food. One star for service since the people who work the self check out are always friendly. The produce department is out of control! I was shopping for cilantro yesterday and all the bunches they had out were turning into black mush in the center. I asked the produce lady if they had any more in the back. She looked a little put out and asked me how many more did I need. I told her I just need one that's not turning into black mush. She brings out an arm full of cilantro and dumps them right over the nasty ones. She tells me these are "fresh." Guess what, they were all turning into black mush too. I brought this to her attention and she told me "oh no those are fresh, they came in on the truck this morning." It doesn't take a genius to see the cilantro wasn't fresh. It might be a new shipment but that means nothing! Open your eyes and maybe take some pride in your work. Her final word of advice was to put some water on it and it will be fine. BTW, this isn't the first time I've come across bad food in the produce department. I have pulled stuff off the prepackaged shelves and delivered them to the store manager on two separate occasions. I don't usually provide bad reviews but the service made me upset. This Safeway is horrible. I had a rain check from a Safeway a mile away, this one was closer to me as I stopped by to purchase a few things. They would not honor my rain check that states the protein shakes were 3 for $5.00. Mariecay was the checker and said she wouldn't honor it! She would only let me purchase 6 and would take my coupon. What horrible customer service! Aren't all Safeway's the same?!? I go to a lot of Safeways for work and this is probably the nicest in the area. I do most of my shopping at TJ's, but I come to Safeway for meat, fish and let's admit it...junk foods. This location has nice wide aisles, a good selection and a lot of pre-made food and bakery choices My absolute favorite things here are the ciabatta breads from Semifreddi's. I don't think they have these at all locations, but they are soooo good! They also sell them at Costco sometimes in 2 packs and freeze well. No I don't work for them :) read more

My first experience at this Safeway was OK. They have reasonable prices on the produce, and we got some good deals on a few other things in the store. However, after repeated visits and after seeing what other yelpers had to say about this store, I am not too happy. First off, the other day, my husband and I decided to make a salad for lunch. When we pulled out our brand new Romaine lettuce we had just bought from there the day before, my husband started washing it only to find a small dead bug in it. No worries. It was on the outside. We just won't eat that part, right? Wrong because there turned out to be dead bugs in every single layer of it -- gross! We would have complained or taken it back, except it was only $1.50. Instead, we just don't plan to buy their produce again. A day or two later I needed to purchase a money order. When we arrived at the customer service desk, there was no one to be found. I waited for a sec, and then decided to ring the bell. Silence. No one came. A couple minutes later I gave the bell three good solid rings. Still nothing, and by this time two or three other customers had started to form a line behind us. "Did you ring the bell?" they asked. "Yes," I told them. Then a store worker came on the intercom system, calling for a specific person to come to the desk. A second person came on the line and said, "I can't. I'm at self-checkout." Still no one came. A couple minutes later someone came out the door behind the counter for a second on the phone and said, "Sorry, I'm helping a customer." At some point during all this another store worker came up, said nothing to any of us, and rang the bell a single time, then walked away. Gee, thanks! The end of the story? Fifteen minutes of my life wasted, and no money order. Grrrrr. The Verdict: I will go here solely on days when it's raining or I am feeling lazy as it is the closest grocery store to my house, but I do not plan to use the customer service, buy produce, and from the reviews on here, have made a mental note to stay away from the bakery as well. read more

The lines get crazy long here around 6-7 pm on weekdays, as the commuter crowd makes stops on the way home to buy stuff for dinner. I would avoid this place during that window if you can. What else can I say about Safeway? Its a grocery store. Adequate, but not exactly excellent. Not bad, either. I like their bakery, I'm not a particularly huge fan of the meat department. Their produce is.......adequate...but not the best. Prices are ok, and when you mix in all the J4U and Card savings you can get some decent deals. I remember when stores like this would stock shelves at night or very early morning. Now it is done during the day including peak shopping times. This along with narrower aisles makes for a difficult shopping venture. I often find myself getting home without all the things I needed, because I have to stop buying and get out due to the frustration in getting around the store and through the aisles. I am certain that the aisles crowded with stuff are "intended" to slow down people - and perhaps that works for many people - but not all of us. I've hesitated posting as I know Safeway is a huge corporation and couldn't care less about customers, however, I am so tired of the employees lackadaisical attitude toward the mask mandate. I only shop there because it's convenient, but every single time I'm there (which is almost daily) there are people shopping without masks. Personally, I hate wearing them but I just suck it up. My feeling is that if there's a giant sign on the doors that says masks are required, then it should apply to everyone!! On another note, they are constantly out of stock on everyday items, the crowds and lines are horrific and I don't appreciate being accosted by solicitors and panhandlers whenever I try to exit the store! I shop here often coz it's close to where I live and has a good selection of food and brands. Can't say much about the Customer Service, but I've never had an issue or cause to use it. The checkers overall aren't very friendly, but that doesn't bother me if I can get my food for a good price (their sale prices are good) and get out quickly. (If you don't buy their items that are on sale, this store overall is quite expensive). I agree with the other person who said don't come here between 6 to 7pm: it is crazy busy then. The lunch hour also seems busy for some reason, from about noon to 1:30pm... maybe the John Muir Hospital crowd doing their grocery shopping on their lunch hour. I do buy the fresh seafood here often, and it's always been very good. Produce is kind of a mixed bag: lately, their bananas have been really "meh" but maybe they're just not in season right now. The lines are always three to four people deep with few checkers open the deli is gross (pistachio delight? Really? Maybe in the south but that can't be called food here). This Safeway location is adequate. They have a Starbucks Espresso Bar inside the location so you can maintain your Caffeine habit. The deli's ok with decent cheese selection. As a matter of fact, it's more or less cookie-cutter with all the other Safeways in the area, including the one on Ygnacio Valley and Oak Grove. Obviously, this is nowhere near as gourmet as Andronico's or Whole Foods, but then again it'll cost you a lot less too! read more

I went there today to send money. It took them a while to come out and the bell was missing so I had to yell out anybody here. Then this girl with the worst attitude came out and when I tried to send money she was so rude it was ridiculous. Always when I go there it's the same thing and as soon as I started to tell her that she kicked me out of store and said she would not help as if she would anyway. Thing is I was trying to send money to Veitnam so my sister in law could be admitted to the hospital with failing liver. And this is the kind of crap I get. Unreal. I was going to give my friendly neighborhood Safeway four stars, but upon perusing the other reviews, I was reminded of the many deficiencies I have encountered there. For instance -- how can a major grocery store be out of SmartBacon for TWO WEEKS? Or the time I needed limes, and their produce department had a total of FOUR, only two of which I found to be of acceptable quality? And I understand that restocking shelves involves having products in the aisles, but completely blocking them, instead of arranging the products so as to leave enough room for a cart to get by, is just laziness. Only the fact that this Safeway is open 24 hours (and I have shopped there on all of them) bumps it from two stars to 2.5, and I have generously rounded up, because the clerks are always friendly and relatively quick. Watched a female cashier fast-stepping from the butchers' area behind the meat counter this morning with her arms full of wrapped meat packages. I thought she might have been taking some ground meat - which I was looking for and couldn't find - to the front of the store for purchase. Upon following her, I was shocked to see her dump everything - turned out to be easily 12 packages of chicken and bacon - at the florist's cashier so she could pay there. When I walked over to her and asked if she saw any ground chicken in the back, she answered, without turning around or looking at me, "Maybe. I don't know." I was so surprised to see an employee behaving in a covert and selfish manner. She was my checker when I left the store. read more

I just moved to the area and started going to the Safeway for a couple of months now every time I have any kind of issue nobody can help me and anytime I try to buy the two for one meats the people in the meat department will tell me one thing like I can mix-and-match and then when I get to the register they told me another and always act like it's my fault like I somehow have a full description of the rules even after I tell him the meat department said this they argue with me no that's not right well I think y'all need to straighten it out on your end and get some signs or something instead of condemning the customers that's one number two I downloaded the app so I could use the coupons it doesn't work I went through the register the compute coupons did not work And no one could explain to me why there was like a manager lady she didn't know the cashier didn't know they didn't want to bother with me just take your groceries and leave so I came back a couple days later went to customer service rang the bell three or four times nobody ever showed up so I got online and I wrote on the little app thing where it says messages about my issues and nobody got back to me so I guess I'm gonna have to find another grocery store cause these guys can't help you worth a shit and one department doesn't know what the others doing the only people I can say that her out-of-the-way friendly are the deli people I go on Fridays and get chicken and they're very nice to me but other than that nobody seems to care if you got a problem or an issue or question must be nice to not need the business read more

Horrible experience all around. I have been coming to this location for the past 2.5 years as it is so convenient based on where I live, and the customer service has always been lackluster at best. I have been tempted in the past to write reviews, but have always hesitated as I did not want the behavior of one individual to reflect upon the entire store. Also, I work in the service industry, and am more empathetic to the circumstances of Covid than those who do not. Some things in Walnut Creek are just Walnut Creepy. This Safeway is at the top of that list. I visted this store all the time when I lived just down the street but now I don't frequent it much without necessity. I popped in on a Saturday afternoon in October because I was hoping to buy a sugar pumpkin for cooking and eating as opposed to the popular but inedible carving pumpkins, so I deliberately went out of my way to hit this store remembering that it was nice, clean and likely to be stocked with oddities. Sadly, no pumpkin luck. We did the rest of our grocery shopping here without much trouble - the problem here for me generally isn't with the items, it's the staff and customers. The parking lot is scary, people drive through here like they're behind the wheel of a stock car. And the patrons in general are just rude, oblivious, all walking around with this sense of "Get out of my way, my needs are more important than yours" - just a snooty entitled attitude. People - it's a GROCERY STORE! You know that vibe in a store on Black Friday where you're kinda afraid for your life and have your guard up? That's what it feels like in here all the time. The employees in general aren't much better - the cashier ringing me up was literally throwing my items down to the bagger once she scanned them, and more than once while shopping I had to hop out of the way of employees pushing around inventory. It's a busy afternoon, I'll happily get out of your way - but it's close quarters, there needs to be some give and take. Don't push giant carts around like zombies, work with people - or do what other Safeways do and do your stocking during non-peak hours. Duh. There's really nothing pleasant about shopping here, just try to get in and get out. What a sorry excuse for an establishment, or lack thereof. Does safeway bother reading this shit? Obviously not because nothing seems to change with this place. My review was about to be just this: "man, seems like everyone here who's posted a review has said it all, I don't think I have much more to add." But now that I think about it having read all this it's got me going enough to say something of my own. Experiences: Bought milk here with charcoal in it? Bought expired shit here. Tried to return something and was denied because my reason of 'I don't want it,' wasn't good enough (I raised hell and got my way though). Cashiers have been okay, not fanatic. Guess that's all. I will say this though. Last night was such an exception to the rule (hence the extra star... Would've been a full on 5 if not for everything else)... Adrian (black guy), a checker, stepped up to help when they were slammed with their usual 20 to 30 people queue of shoppers to open another check stand, and he took me first because unlike all the other asshole shoppers I had to wait behind with groceries spilling over the brim of their carts, I just had sugar. He was great. And his customer service and attitude was fantastic! He even defied his manger by not taking his break to help ease the crazy ass line (I don't know if I'd have done that myself). Thank you Adrian! I'll give you a perfect score on the safeway survey (and hopefully win that $1,000)... but I have to tell it how it is when it comes to the store you work at (in other words, it's not you, it's the store). I feel so strongly about this guy's good attitude and customer service that if I was like on that show, Undercover boss, I'd make him the manager.
