This store is just OK. I never have a problem finding things I need, but the check out lines are terrible. They are understaffed in this area. I usually shop at night to avoid this. Other than that I give this place an A- read more

I'm really rooting for my local Safeway. I think recent management is trying to make it better. It wasn't too long ago every single time I would go in some checker was publicly moaning that it was damn time for their break. I'm sure they deserved their breaks but it was so comically unprofessional how they would articulate it. read more

A very good Safeway? This is a contradiction in terms. This Safeway is run of the mill. Bad produce, lots of chips, soda & pre packaged things. No selection unless you are seeking General Mills products. Lines are long. Checkers are slow and quick to drop a couple small items in a plastic bag. I almost lost it when a creepy bagger was eying my 11 year old daughter in the parking lot. read more

For Marin standards I would say this grocery store is subpar. The floors are always sticky, the butchers are constantly using profane language within earshot of the customers and deli department is always slow. However, the register staff are friendly and fast, the floral shop is always well equipped for whatever seasonal holiday is upcoming and the shopping carts are clean. Overall, it's a place to go when you are in a hurry and know what you need. read more

This has been my Safeway store for a long time. I think it's hard to be a middle-class market in San Anselmo... hard to keep workers at the corporate pay rates in pricey Marin. I think their people do their best. Their prices are the best around. I forgot my credit card at the self-check register yesterday. I called to see if I left it there and was told that: Yes, they did have it; and that somehow the customer behind me had had his food charged on my card. When he realized what had happened, he paid them in cash, which they turned over to me when i picked up my card. We live in a nice world sometimes. read more

This is the worst grocery store in the history of grocery stores. Long slow lines, Terrible service, product picked over, but at least the team isn't pleasant. read more

It is very hard to pay for the groceries because the check outs are not all manned and the self check out has problems. I have walked out of the store whenever I get frustrated because I do not want to wait in line. The produce looks and tastes like plastic and is very expensive. Thank you read more

Wow Safeway I'm not a fan...... I moved to the area in April and started shopping at Safeway since it was so close to my house, it has blown my mind every single time I go how terrible it is. Every time I'm in the store there is only two to three lines open with customers at times waiting up to 10 people deep and cashiers who really don't seem to care either way. It's also frustrating to me that every time I go in the door and reach for the small plastic baskets they are no where in sight because they are 20 high at the registers and no one has taken the time to assure they are pulled hourly and placed back at the door for the customers to use. I always shopped at Lucky and loved that store, now I just hate going to the supermarket.... read more

Avoid this place as the checkers (and Manager's) don't know how to count. 15 Items or Less, means 15 or less!! NOtT60 items because it was 10:30 a.m. and no one had 15 items or less so you take a guy with 60++ items! Guess what, 5 people came with 2-5 items right after she started helping the guy. The guys said "Sarah" the checker it was OK to do! I brought it to the Manager's attention and he didn't even say he was sorry. I'm calling the Corporate Office because they have NO CLUE on how to manage the store!! Go anywhere else! United, Whole Foods, Andonicos. MANAGEMENT: Catch a clue and learn some management techniques! read more

It is sad to see poor reviews for a place I utilized for years. The food/ groceries are acceptable but it is hard to find some one for help. The cash registers are a bit of a pain. One good thing is the self check out but still I do shop at other safeways. San Anselmo Safeway needs a little makeover and love! Copy millvalley's and cortemadera ...... I like my experiences there. read more

Maureen (who I believe is the store manager) is absolutely fantastic! I came in looking for a way to keep ice cold for the day because I had forgotten my cooler! She was absolutely exceptional, heading into the back and creating a makeshift cooler for me, along with recommending the nearest store where I could buy dry ice to keep the ice from melting! And on top of this already exceptional service, she even helped carry everything out to my car. I'm so impressed! She could have easily just said "We don't have anything, sorry" but instead spent the time to make sure I was taken care of! read more

Wow....... This Safeway isn't sooooo bad, except for some of the usual grumpy checkers, (a.k.a David.) One of the checkers named David likes to harass me about the 3 cent bag credits. Which I guess is not so much, but I bought the freaking bags in the first place so please Safeway, pick your checkers wisely! Other than that, this Safeway has some good food, but I don't necessarily trust the produce section, try Anronico's instead for that department. And almost all of the other checkers are sweet, and seem like they enjoy their days at Safeway. read more

I agree with other reviewers, the store is huge and yet the selection of groceries is limited, mainly processed foods. No bulk food which is surprising. The produce area is smaller than most and the checkout staff, at least at night does not come across as very happy. It feels like a "big box store", it is big and new and bright and at the same time it has no soul. I may do more shopping at Mollie Stone's even though the drive is further. read more

I have been shopping at this store for years and after this morning it will be a long time before I shop at this place again. Besides doing our families major shopping at this establishment, I spend $500 weekly on gas gift cards for my truck fleet which I have been doing for two years now. After going to the check out to pay this morning I was greeted by the rudest checker (middle aged blond female) with the nastiest of attitudes. She excused herself for a minute and came back to tell me that I could not use my credit/debit card to make this purchase and had to use cash! I asked her if she was kidding as who carries $500 in cash these days. her response was some guy named "Ike" said they could not accept cc for payment. I asked if Ike was a manager and set policy and she said no. I asked for a manager and she rudely stated there was no manager on duty and she flat out refused to take my cc as payment, so I threw the gift cards up in the air and left. When I called to complain to a manager they put some guy on the phone that could not speak English and hung up on me. I looked to me as this woman did not want to do her job and set her own policy, San Anselmo Safeway has lost $3000 in business from me and I will not be going somewhere else as the B St. Store was more than happy to take my cc as payment. read more

Is there anyone at this Safeway who knows what they're doing? Long lines for the self-check, because 1/2 the machines are out of service. Long lines for the check stand because there's only one open. The local high school is on lunch break and herds of hungry teens are crawling all over the place. One women uses the self-check but leaves before paying because there's not enough employees to supervise. So another machine is left unusable until it gets cleared. And then another check stand opens and, you guessed, people wandering up to the check stands slip into line ahead of the dozens who've been fuming for too long. This isn't the first time. It won't be the last. Why? Why can't Safeway figure out how to manage the lines and the employees? Why can't they anticipate that, at around noon every school day, there will likely be heavier traffic and they need to open a few more stands? Why can't checkers see who's been waiting and call them over with a "next in line"? Why do we have to wait in line to give them our money? What is wrong with these people? And is there ever a manager around? Not enough, not nearly enough. read more

No matter how many customers are in the store, this Safeway will never have more than 2 cashiers working. There will be other employees milling around but they can't violate the firm company policy: make customers wait so that they appreciate everything in life a little more when they finally emerge from this hell hole. read more

This Safeway is the absolute worst! Does anyone read yelp reviews about a Safeway? I don't know. Do I want to inform the world about the need to bulldoze this crappy store and all it's bad juju? Yes! The people that work there all HATE their jobs, and they will not hesitate to tell you every time you go through the check out. Seriously. It's depressing. I assume under other circumstances, the people that work there are probably free spirited, or at the very least, alive. Confined to their jobs at this heinous store, they are irritable drones (except Lenny, who's sarcasm shines via his wit). There is no bulk food at this store, and very few healthy options. The ones available are hidden among the Hungry Man dinners and the Oreos. My biggest pet peeve may be that the employees seem to be trained to waste as many plastic bags as possible. They will double or even TRIPLE bag tiny items that don't even NEED a bag at all! Once I caught someone sticking an item of mine (that was packaged in a clean, cardboard box mind you) in a bag and told them I didn't need it and asked them to re-use it. It hadn't even been removed from the caddy- and he ripped it off and threw it in the trash!! It may not have been so bad, but that type of thing happens to me almost every time I shop there. I now drive a half mile further to shop at United to avoid going into Safeway. read more

Went to this location this last evening to purchase a quick dinner as we did not feel like cooking. We tried to buy some fried chicken from the counter. We were unfortunate in that we were assisted, and i use that term very loosely! by a woman whe seemed very past retirement age. 6 times we verbally asked for eight pieces of fried chicken but no drumsticks! We said we did not mind paying more but did not like drumsticks. At least five or six times this woman kept picking up drumsticks to put in the box! Every time we reiterated that we did not want drumsticks! Finally we get our box of chicken and go to meet our friends. Guess what? We got charged for 8 pieces of chicken and received only six pieces!!!! How can you run a store with incoherent staff who cannot count? It would have been less disappointing for us and our friends if we had just gone to Subway! If you are in a hurry and expect good customer service then AVOID this Safeway at all costs! read more

I go to this Safeway almost everyday. They are now offering more and more organic foods at good prices. The wine selection and prices can't be beat. read more

While this store undoubtedly has the best prices out of the array of grocery stores in the area - we generally stay away. The store is in a nice shopping center, is mostly well stocked, but my goodness, the people - S L O W and not very friendly. And it's not just the cashiers - it's the people at the deli, the Starbucks, the baggers - everyone is grumpy, and disgruntled -- there must be something wrong at the management level - and it needs to get fixed. These poor people. read more

I still hate shopping here in spite of the fact that they have decent stock at better prices than the market closer to my house. I always come out of there extremely irritated at the slowness of the checkout line. They are slow because the checkers stop what they are doing to carry on a conversation with the customers in front of me. I see that somebody made exactly the same comments on here a couple of months ago. When I go shopping my goal is to gather up what I need and get out of the store as quickly as possible. I was so mad yesterday that I had to bite my tongue because I was ready to make a really sarcastic remark to the woman at the till. I knew I would have felt bad about being rude, so I contented myself with giving her a withering look. It is completely unacceptable to me to be kept waiting while they actually stop work to talk to the customer ahead of me. I think there is really poor management there and absolutely no idea of customer service. read more

5 stars not for supermarket behemoth chains but for the super-friendly and helpful staff who work here. They are unfailingly pleasant and chatty in the best sort of small-town way, and make it a great experience to shop here. read more

I will never go here again. It takes FOREVER to get in and out of the store. They refuse to put on extra check outs to get people on their way. Then in their wierd fake corporate identity they call you by your name and tell you to have a wonderful day. A woman called Judy (head checker) is a complete fake. Why on earth are you asking me about my "day" when I have been waiting in line for 15 minutes to purchase a gallon of milk? Unbelieveable, support your local farmers market! read more

Even with setting expectations low, they continue to disappoint. There was one checker manning 2 self check out stations of the six available. Asked why the other 4 were not open and he said that management was closing them out. Meanwhile a line 8 people deep waited... Seriously what is Safeway's problem? They are really bad. The only reason I didn't give them 1 star is that their prices on staples can be much lower than other grocery stores. Can't wait for Amazon to start delivering goods locally to Marin to shake Safeway up. read more

I've always been more of a United Market shopper because lines are shorter and there are more registers open, but Safeway is next to my office. They have definitely improved a great deal in their produce department - including a lot of organic food. And, the prices are pretty unbeatable. However, the psychological cost of dealing with the frustrating "self check-out" stands makes the discount on the food not seem worth it. I suspect they think they are saving money by putting in these stands but one constantly needs to utilize the living employee at the self check-outs to get out of there. Thankfully, they are so helpful and kind and lovely. The machines themselves are annoying and not up to par with what they are trying to accomplish. I consider myself fairly savvy with these types of things and even when completely following the directions correctly, I am always having to wait for the support staff to clear one thing or another for me. Too bad they don't just keep the clerks behind the registers, and open all the registers. The employees there provide wonderful costumer service but the business itself is lacking in this regard. read more

Am I the only person in Marin who detests Safeway?? I used to be a die-hard SW person but at some point they went off the deep end with their extreme customer service policy. I don't need every single employee in the store to saying hi to me and ask me if I need help finding anything. I'm an adult, I think I can figure it out. I don't need the checker to attempt to give that down-home-small-town feel by reading my name off of the receipt (and mangling it many times, I might add. It's a pretty simple name, not sure where they come up with some of the pronunciations!). The kicker is that if my husband is with me he bags everything up and yet the checker still asks if we need help out today. DUH...why would you think we would need help out if we just bagged up everything and loaded it into our cart? Think McFly, Think!!! That's my big beef with SW. The staff is so brainwashed by the corporate office that I think they are scared of the consequences if they don't repeatedly ask all their customers the same inane questions day after day. The other thing is they went ahead and remodeled most of their stores and somehow seemed to make them SMALLER. The produce section is a joke. All these weird crates are poking out all over the place and two people can't get a basket through there at the ame time. If there's a mom with one of those RIDICULOUS carts with the little car attached to it forget it. Turn around and go the other way, you'll never get past them. That's why I normally don't shop there. I much prefer United or even Mollie Stones (although a bit pricier). read more

I dislike Safeway, sparing you the recitation, but sometimes you need them. Like when you buy your secret stash of diet Squirt or need chunchy chow mein noodles or something. My mediocre vote here indicates that this is the best Safeway in the vicinity, in my opinion. You can park easily. It's medium size and somewhat updated. It's pleasant, for a Safeway. The staff are friendly. There is self check. There is a bakery. You can buy a decent pork bun (0.99) or corn dog (1.00) if you are really feeling crass. None of your friends will go here, so you are safe. read more

I've been a Safeway fan and a loyal customer since moving to California from the Midwest just 5 years ago. I have shopped at the store near my home until they closed it last year on Ygnacio Valley Road in Walnut Creek, to put in a Whole Foods and eventually, open a larger store across the street. However, I am moving to the North Bay and went into this store and thought I would grab a Starbucks on the way in. After waiting 7 minutes with no one showing up at the counter, I tried to get the attention of a worker in the department next to it with no luck (they appear to have looked right through me). I finally waved at a clerk who was walking to the front and when he, too, appeared to ignore me, I walked up to him and asked if anyone was working at the Starbucks counter. His response, as he began to wipe the floor was, "I'm sorry, I wouldn't know" and he kept on wiping the floor. I repeated what he said twice and he ignored me again. I walked out and proceeded to get my coffee from Peet's in the same shopping center where I was treated as a valuable customer and I left a nice tip and then went down the street to Andronico's and spent over $200 on grocery items. I have decided that I will not step foot in that Safeway ever again nor will I shop at any Safeway for the rest of 2016, nor will I set foot in any Starbucks for the rest of this year as well. It's a small gesture and may not mean much to two big corporations like Safeway and Starbucks as a single customer unless one counts up all the grande lattes I drink in a single year and all the groceries I purchase and multiply that by the number of other customers who have likely experienced what I did today. Potential loss in sales for both establishments combined, North of $7000 annually and I am only "one" customer. You don't want or need my business? You would rather treat me as if I'm a bother and/or invisible and you couldn't care less if I spend my money in your store? Well, someone else does care. And I will shop there going forward. read more

This store is a real drag. They are always short on staff, the lines are ALWAYS long, and no one seems to care. Lines 5-10 carts deep on most days, no baggers, and no management in site. This monring, I had to wait 10 minutes to even find a checker at all - that's right, no checkers and all selef serve aisles were closed. So we just waited around while they tried to find a single checker. Albertson's has brought its lousy custeomer service and negligence to a formerly great Safeway brand. This Safeway is awful! Especially on the weekends the shelves are often empty of staples and sale items. Getting through the check out lines on the weekends can take forever, as they are always understaffed. Have mostly stopped shopping here since they stock such small variety and never staff the deli counter. Went in the other night after a long day of travel to grab a cracked crab for a quick snack. I gladly go to United Market and pay more to avoid this place. Prices are low, and they have some incredible sales, but then they have an annoying habit of running out of things when they are on sale. Staff seems not really empowered to make things better. Most of the staff are really nice and try to be helpful, but it is all for a lost cause and morale seems low. Self checkout has helped, except they don't allow it at night when they really need it. Avoid this place if you can. Open 'till midnight so that's a real good thing in an emergency if you really need something. read more

This store at Red Hill Plaza gets more lame all the time. NO carts in the cart corral - frequently, anymore. Seriously, you cannot afford to pay people to fetch in your carts? Never enough cashiers at checkout....carts lined up six deep. A small cup of coffee from the barista is now $2.05. That's for a plain black, small, coffee. A bulk bagel cost me $1.58. One. They are chronically out of things. The area's most popular blue cheese dressing - no longer obtainable. I've asked the produce guy. Nope. If you want 'Lite' you can have it; not regular. Not ever. Add that to dripping wet and spoiling lettuce, almost no small-batch soft drinks (the good kind) "where's-it -from" seafood (maybe you don't count contaminants; I do) and four bucks for a chocolate bar, and their penchant for suddenly changing the aisles where they put stuff....not worth it. And speaking of aisles, just try using their on-line shopping, which asks you what aisle you want to shop. How about "bakery". There is no such aisle, according to the on-line service. But don't waste your time anyway...the pies are just atrocious. I'm heading for United Market from now on. read more

This Safeway just lost one more customer. I have been shopping here regularly for the past 11 years or more. About a year ago I had a major incident involving a man named Mike, (whom I think is part of management in fact!). He got irate at me for questioning a price on pineapple, and got extremely hostile when I apologized for holding up the line...."do you want me to help you or not!?"...he yelled and ultimately made me cry! My mother also used to be a regular shopper, but now refuses to shop there, but gave the store another chance the other day when she needed something in a hurry. She has an accent, and is repeatedly treated with disrespect. She was asked ..."can't' you read?"...when she was having trouble seeing the text prompts on the credit card reader screen. The checker and...again, Mike....were ridiculing her back and forth between themselves. I made a visit to speak to the manager that same day to state my complaint, and through my tears told her what had transpired earlier that day. I got a blank stare back as a response, and left feeling as if I had accomplished absolutely nothing. This store and it's people have now made me actually cry twice in the past year. That's enough. I'm done. I will now take my business to United down the street. read more

The checker Jamie last nite threw a plastic bag away when I said I didn't need the bag, and smurked at me when I tried to explain that it is made from oil and we are at war over oil. Asked him to use it for the next customer, said no it will be recycled. I asked to speak to the manager, who came out and said he was sorry. I left frustrated, and realized he didn't ask for my club card and had screwed me for $7.00, so I went back in and they were laughing it up and talking about me in spanish. Told them I was glad I was so entertaining, and I wanted my discount, which he had not asked me about, the manager gave it to me....Boy I'm glad I only need to go in there for emergency's. do not ever buy the "sale"/marked down meats at this store...I do not know if this a company-wide problem, as I have not ever purchased meats at any other Safeway store, though I suspect it is a policy being followed at all Safeway meat departments....would like to hear feedback from other customers.... the reason not to buy the on sale meats at Red Hill Safeway is that these meats are horrible/ of no quality whatsoever/inedible/gristle-filled and very, very tough,,,with no taste.... it is obvious that meats of very poor quality are put on sale/marked down in hopes that the less-affluent purchaser will accept them with no complaint... not so in my case, as I have simply returned the inedible meats and been asked that my money be refunded...my money was refunded, each time this occurred....the various cuts of beef are the culprits, most usually.... . ..and now I am off to RH Safeway to return a particularly gristle-filled, tough and inedible pot roast which was a disgusting disappointment....another... wondering why i continue to buy these discounted products...seems I accept the apologies/the returned money and the assurances "it will not happen again"... .seems I am a hopeful person, thinking someone at headquarters will be told of the problem and that said problem will be taken care of/corrected.. that has not happened to date/.not yet..... hey, Safeway(whoever the new owners are at this point)...do you want this sort of reputation?
