On February 16, 2026, at a Safeway gas station located at 1001 SW Highland Drive, Gresham, OR 97030, a gas station attendant displayed racist behavior by refusing to fill my tank. The attendant's manner of speaking to customers was unfriendly; they asked for my phone number, which I provided, and requested a full tank of premium gasoline. After I showed my ATM card, the attendant asked how much I wanted. I said a full tank, and the attendant asked if it was regular gasoline. I replied "full tank of premium." I then questioned the attendant, asking, "What's wrong with you?" After I asked, the attendant refused to fill my tank and even threatened to call the police. I tried to go inside Safeway to speak to the manager but was unsuccessful in reporting the attendant's racist and inappropriate behavior. This is our neighborhood grocery store (walking distance) and we have been happy customers for 17 years. However things have changed DRASTICALLY recently and we are trying to avoid this store now. Maybe new manager? Staffing is at a minimum. Last time I was there, seven carts were in line for the one open register. There were four employees standing around the self-checkout area and only three of those were functioning. Customer service is horrendous! About a month ago I was in line for 15 minutes, noticed two employees standing at the customer service desk so I called the store and asked them to open another register; they hung up on me! Still some of the worst service in the area. When asking for help from bakery counters or other areas your treated rudely by managers who just don't seem to want to help the customers. They'd rather stay in their back hidden room. The fresh fruit and veggies area is always empty. They never seem to stock this store as well as others. If your looking to shop Safeway go to the others in town. While the service might be sub par there at least you won't be treated poorly for wanting to buy and shop The store. read more

A typical Safeway with a large footprint that never seems to be logically organized causing me to walk all over the place to find specific items. When I have appointments out this way, I stop in if I need to pick up a few items and I'm pressed on time. It's never my store of choice. The positives are they are conveniently located on NE MLK and NE Ainsworth with a huge parking lot out front and a Starbucks inside. Not a place to shop during a pandemic--safe distancing and isle flow arrows were not in play on my brief visit here. The carts aren't cleaned between customer uses but there were sanitizing wipes available. The single entrance / exit was my biggest concern with at least six people in close proximity for my exit. There was no place to go but through the doors and within a few feet of people standing in the foyer. The service at checkout is historically good in my experience and there's plenty of parking, which is why I stopped to pick a few things up. I'll likely not be back, even in better public health times. Safeway, you're overdue to pick up your care for your customers and your employees. read more

I was checking out and had one bag, and a your child with me at the self checkout, the cashier told me it was my personal responsibility to take the basket outside with me, that's ridiculous it's bad enough I'm checking my own groceries out when that is somebody else's job now you want me to put the baskets back in a certain place which is yet another persons job, high prices poor customer service, and no one available to check out your groceries or put the basket back where it belongs will not be shopping here anymore. read more

The Pharmacy here is incredibly slow. We made an appointment ahead of time for the Covid and Flu vaccine at 10:00 AM. Checked in at 10:05 and did not get the vaccine until 10:50. I understand a 10-15 minute wait, but someone checked in after us for two vaccines and got taken before us. There were also 2 pharmacists and at least 3 staff members. Be prepared for an infuriating experience from start to finish. Employees spend more time chatting with each other than working. It's not uncommon to see the staffers chatting by the self checkout while there people are waiting for ID checks or coupons. And there are only three waiting because there's usually only three of the six working. Checkers spend more time waiting for managers than they do checking people out! Worst Safeway EVER.. Constantly fail to add discounts. Employees are RUDE. Untrained. Last visit, had to spend time at customer service (standard) Employee told me they were doing me a favor by taking $5 food off my bill. Total was ANOTHER $15 plus. Poor math perhaps. The customer service lady, walked up and immediately was on the defensive attack. Kept assuring her I simply was tired of overpaying, $10-$20 per visit. They all blame corporate/just for you. They clearly need help with management here. Place is understaffed, which is not the fault of the workers themselves at all. Some workers are kind, including the person at the self-service checkout I see often. At least half the time, half, if not more than half of the self-service checkouts are not working, causing long lines. My biggest complaint goes to the pharmacy- not so much because of the staff, but because of the lack of people up at the front desk. Must be a staffing issue. Lines are always way too long at pharmacy when it is most convenient for me. I get my medicine there since it's closest to where I live and most affordable. It would help move lines if they had another pharmacist or two ringing at the front desk. There are rarely people at the full-service checkout lanes- and typically only one is open. On my lunch break today I decided to go to this Safeway and grab a salad or sandwic and encountered a rude employee who was working in the deli at 12:22 pm. Before I could even ask him for assistance he immidi responds with our sandwich area is closed, while I was in the middle of responding he immediately walks away and chooses not to further assist me. The part of the story I left out in the beginning was while I was standing to the side I watched this man help two people before me and he was very polite to me. Based on my whole picture/experience I would have to say it was a race issue. One of the store managers working this shift assisted me by address this issue immediately. I can usually tolerate the long (very long) lines and poor customer service. However today even the prepackaged cheese was moldy. Like how bad to you have to screw up to let product that's sealed in wax sit outside of safe temperatures so that it is intolerable to keep in your kitchen trashcan. They do not answer their phones. When they do they do not greet you with a hello or with their name. I usually have to ask who I am speaking to. No one picked up the phone after calling 3 times in an hour. Iffy is not responsive and gets upset very easily. She doesn't take her job seriously and almost shames me when I pick up my meds. I recommend talking to the store's management. The next thing I will do is write, email and call the district office. I recommend you do the same if you rely on this local Safeway. I had a terrible experience today while trying to use my digital coupons. Unfortunately, the apps rarely or never work right. The person in self checkout was a joke. She could not help me. Typically when there is an app issue they just fix the problem there by making manual adjustments. She was incompetent and sent me to a longer line where her manager was cashiering. The manager there was rude, unprofessional and LAZY. His name was JOVANN. He refused to help stating that it would take long to fix the issue and he had customers behind me, what the hell? Aren't I a customer?? I was also the only person in his line. The others left when they heard how rude he was being. This lazy, no good manager then calls someone else over to make the corrections because he refused. Not sure of the reason why. I called him lazy to his face and then he wanted to argue with me and told me he had 2 jobs. Well, he would not have to have 2 if he done one of them right!! He then slung my groceries across the counter. And told me I did not have to shop there. BEWARE- If you have issues of ANY kind- do not expect JOVANN to make it right. Laziness gets you know where!! This place is a dump. Horrible customer service, find another grocery store. I bought the wrong product for my new born, wrong type of formula. So I went back with my receipt in hand and the product unopened and they refused a refund even though I was purchasing the the correct product. Came early in the morning 8:30am to return some stuff I bought at another Safeway down the street. Didn't know you can only get your cash back when you return it at the same store. Otherwise you get a gift card. But regardless the customer service opens at 9 am. This blond middle age white guy with glasses Mike or Marc or something sent me off right away: "No we don't accept returns". I asked 3 times and there should be a way to return a brand new shampoo and detergent" He just said no and rejected me. I rarely go to this Safeway anymore for a number of reasons, but I went tonight for a good sale on frozen lunches, I couldn't pass up. Unfortunately they were out of what I wanted but that was ok, as they'll restock tomorrow. What really impressed me was at 7:00 in the evening, they actually had 3 check outs open! Of all the Safeway stores in N/NE this is my least favorite for several reasons: PARKING - this lot itself is cramped and does not flow well. And trying to exit the lot onto either MLK or Ainsworth can be incredibly frustrating much of the time. DELI - the hot food always looks lukewarm like it's been sitting there for hours and there are always trays that have not been refilled (during peak and off-peak times). And the refrigerated deli food frequently looks crusted over (for example the macaroni and the potato salads). Very unappealing for sure. The one time that I actually tried to get food at the deli, the customer service was worse than sub-par. I actually had such an unpleasant experience that I asked to speak with a manager (Note: This was the first time I have ever complained about service at a grocery store... it was that bad!!!) QUALITY - The produce section is hit-or-miss, sometimes the produce is great, but sometimes the vegetables are wilted and the fruit had bruised and/or soft spots. And be careful buying packaged berries, several times I've seen strawberries and blueberries with mold, ewwww! SERVICE - I have actually had consistently GOOD service here. Sometimes the lines move a little slow, but the cashiers are always really nice :) SELF-CHECKOUT - Unfortunately they seem to have frequent issues with their equipment here. Based on the 3 times I've been here it's by far the worst grocery store around. First off, the deli has a huge variety of hot and prepared food. Unfortunately, they have really bad workers. All three times I've gone there, I've had to ask them if they were open because they just stood there talking to each other while I stood waiting, with no one else at the counter. It took the deli employee 15 minutes to make a sandwich for someone on another occasion, while a line of people started growing (the other employee didn't help anyone, and when asked they just went into the walk in cooler) They never have enough employees at the register, so prepare to wait a long time. This is easily the worst grocery store that I have ever shopped at in my life. I hate that it's the only moderately cheap grocery store in close proximity to my house (it's absolutely overpriced for how crappy it is). I've never shopped here without there being long lines. I don't think that I've ever seen the store staff more than 3 registers regardless of whether it's peak hours or not. In addition, you can almost always count on 1 or 2 of the self checkout stations to be out of service. It seems like management makes zero effort to repair them. There's also no room for the long lines to form which creates awkward and uncomfortable situations where people can't get around the lines or others cut lines. Waiting in line to check out for 30 minutes is an absolute joke. This Safeway is also sketchy as hell. I've seen someone steal a woman's groceries as she was loading her car. People shoplift here rampantly and you will hear "security" calls on the intercom every 5 or 10 minutes. Other people I know have witnessed fights inside the store. One positive that I can give the store is that they hired a new guy who often works the self checkout area and he really does a fantastic job of helping people get through the area. Maybe this is the beginning of more positive changes. The majority of the other employees do a great job of letting you know how disinterested they are in their jobs. read more
