He said he had been with his dentist for so long he did not feel he should make the change. I was very pleased with my first visit and every subsequent visit to Dr. Unkenholz. I find his hygienists are extremely friendly. I have recommended him to several people since I started going to him. With the Covid pandemic going on at my last check up they were very safety conscious. No patients were allowed in the waiting room. They waved patients in to check in as their hygienist were ready and took them promptly. Everyone wore masks in the office. The hygienist are attentive to your comfort and are gentle. In addition to the TVs on the wall and ceiling in the exam rooms, you will be offered glasses to protect your eyes and a wide variety of flavors to choose from for your teeth polishing. I had seen a couple negative reviews and am surprised to see them. My experiences have always been 5 star.

They have shown contempt and disregard for me as a patient, customer and a person. I was referred to this office by my dentist who detected potential cancer concerns on my tongue. They sent me to this office and instructed me to take my medical insurance. Upon arriving at the West River office I was told they do not take medical insurance (even though a biopsy falls under a medical procedure). When I asked for clarification on why I was instructed to bring my insurance card to them, the receptionist sternly said "If you don't want to pay, you can leave." They choose to not work with medical insurance. For - what I gather - no other reason than laziness. I did pay in cash that day. That's what you do when the concern of cancer is lofted at you. 10 months later I received a phone call from Indiana University (IU). They did the lab work on my biopsy sample. But failed to send me a bill. IU blames West River for a minimal error in my address, and West River blames IU. West River did submit their work to my insurance company (a small outfit you may not have heard of - Blue Cross Blue Shield), but refused to recognize that IU was out of my network. West River did no due diligence to work with my insurance and send the lab work to somewhere in my network (they choose to ignore the many labs in the state of SD in favor of somewhere states away). They gave me not option or notice that they chose to use an out-of-network lab. To recap: They would not take health insurance (despite attempting to make a claim -- is that fraud?) They would not do due diligence to work within my insurance's network. They gave me no notification that they were contracting out this work and that I would have additional financial responsibilities. They gave IU my address incorrectly (according to IU) and I didn't receive bills or notice for over 10 months. They took my money (rudely and without compassion) and demonstrated no concern for the additional challenges they created for me. In fact they seemed inconvenienced that I would even bother to investigate these business practices. In as much as possible, do not give West River any of your business. I will update if West River decides to take any responsibility or actions to care for this customer.

There were multiple delays in processing the order and the glasses, and it ended up taking substantially longer than I was originally told. After multiple delays I picked up the glasses and explained my frustration to the person serving me that day. The doctor was out that day but she later personally emailed me and apologized for the delays. Also, her office wrote me a letter with attached discount if I would give them a second chance. It was great customer service and I appreciated it. We all deserve a second chance. I would consider going there again. I am quite happy with the glasses as well.

Everyone in the office was very friendly, and it was a welcoming environment. I checked in and did the typical insurance exchange. Within a couple of minutes Dr Schaefer came out to get me. At first I thought I had the summer intern, as he is a young looking guy. I am at an age where I can fortunately choose Doctors that should outlast me, so that I don't have to adjust for someone new. Dr Schaefer may be young, but that comes with a huge benefit. Everyone in their life has met with a care provider somewhere that has decades under their belt, and they show it by asking a couple of questions, acting burdened, and rushing off to the next patient. Dr Schaefer was the complete opposite. He was patient, answered all of my questions, and was highly professional throughout.
