Don't get sandwiches from Alexandra at the deli. She pretty much made me want to kill myself. She's older woman (white) with really short hair (only a couple inches). She was so rude, throwing the stuff on my sandwich like she was so mad at me. All I asked for was a simple chicken wrap from the menu. THIS IS YOUR JOB! Don't be pissed at customers for ordering items. The veggies looked like they were five weeks old. I literally have made Safeway my number one grocery store until today. I go there 5 times a week for the past 15 years. She made me never want to go back. I will only be going to whole foods going forward. Shame on you Safeway for hiring such a mean employee. read more

It's a grocery store, what can i say.. Since its new and there's apartments right above and next to it the parking situation sucks. You can go in there and shop, it's a clean well put together store but I'd terrible if you need help. If you were to go to the customer service desk it's a ghost town so be prepared to do some waiting. Then also expect for the first person to come to have no idea how to do anything so you're going to have to wait some more! read more

Some of the pharmacy technicians are very rude. Almost ridiculously so. Had simple question, and was given incorrect information, seemingly on purpose. She literally didn't care. Spoke to the pharmacist. Very nice and answered my question. Taking my business elsewhere in any case. read more

I'm so tired of going to this Safeway time and again to find only ONE regular line and ONE express line open, with lines backing up down the aisles. My frozen foods are melted by the time I reach the cashier. I have complained many times, and they don't seem to care. They are saving money by having a couple of fewer employees on at night, but I am taking my business elsewhere. read more

Cafe eating area is very dirty and untidy. Space could be utilized better and more garbage bins should be placed around area.

The store seems great. But every time I go there, there are at least three dirty, insane-looking homeless people camped out at the only tables available for sitting and eating. Gross, and this prevents me from wanting to eat, period. I even stopped going for a couple years, went back a few days ago and they are STILL there. Safeway is where I buy a few things that I can't get at Whole Foods and the California Street store made that convenient. After my first visit to this new store I have no plans to go back. It's too hard to get in and out due to the parking configuration, and they moved the machines for refilling water bottles into the middle of the store and raised the price over 20%. Basically they put an urban store into the suburbs. Thankfully I can still go to Bailey Park Safeway for the things I want. Safeway, if you do update the Bailey Park store, please don't repeat this strategy there or you really will lose this customer to one of the alternatives. read more

I don't know what it's like during the day but don't go here after 10pm. Went here one night and as i was shopping, i noticed only 2 lines open with 10 people in each line. Figured it would die down, but when i was done shopping and came back to the checkout area, the 2 lines were even longer so they had not opened other checkout lanes and the lines were not moving! I guess everyone in line was so tired that no one said anything or thought to ask for a manager. I usually do this but it was late and i was tired just like everyone else. They had many workers in the store stocking the shelves. Not sure why they did not call any of those people up. Seems like no one is managing this store. I looked at my goceries that i had just spent 30 minutes gathering and noticed the lines were really not moving and asked myself do i want to wait another 20-30 minutes more around 11pm at night or do I need to get home to my family? I'll never go to this Safeway again. Too bad since it seems like a nice store. read more

Generally I like this Safeway. It's clean, it's well laid out, and the employees are friendly, courteous, and professional. I have one complaint. Almost every time I ask for stamps, I do not receive them. Sometimes I remember to ask as I'm handed the receipt and wished a nice day, but sometimes, I forget or assume they are inside the folded up receipt/coupons/monopoly money handed to me. Today I got all the way home and found NO STAMPS in my receipt or in any of my bags. I was charged for them (2 books) and once again, did not receive them. I know being a cashier is a hard job and I know it requires multi-tasking and dealing with lots of things at once. I know because I worked as one. But if your cashiers can remember to charge someone for stamps but not give them to the person, there is a problem. I have the receipt, but it sure looks shady to come back and say "hey, I didn't get my stamps". How can I prove that? Please do something about this. This is the third or fourth time it's happened. I like the convenience of getting stamps at safeway which saves me a trip to the post office, but I will no longer purchase stamps here if this isn't solved. read more

This Safeway is awful. Just got back. They had 2 cashiers checking out and they were soooo slow. The manager refused to let other cashiers open. I waited for about 15 minutes and gave up. Tip for those in the area. Drive over to the Menlo Park Safeway to shop. read more

I really enjoy Safeway. Since I have a club card, I am able to purchase things for rather cheap prices. Also, the staff at the Safeway next to my house is very accommodating. I especially like one of the staff members who tends to walk around the aisles helping people out. I'm not sure what her name is, but she's really great. Also, the people working the cashiers and the people working the self checkout area are very nice as well. I come here a couple times a week, at least two or three. Sometimes I buy a lot for my family and it never ends up being a hassle. The Safeway that I live by is even in walking distance. I have never had any complaints about the Safeway except that sometimes the fruit isn't as wonderful as it could be, and also you can buy really cheap fruit from Felipe's market next-door. All in all, I rate Safeway a five out of five stars because I've never had any significant complaints and Safeway has always gotten me exactly what I needed. read more

I went to the office and found 3 employees sitting around chit chatting and they have the nerve to get on the intercom and call a cashier. If they didnt want to be bothered why wasnt a self checkout lane opened? This was the WORST experience I've had at a grocery store. I was buying kombucha and forgot that since it was the alcoholic one I couldn't go through the self check out. When I got to the self-checkout the clerk ripped my ID out of my hand, and walked away with it, not telling me where he was going. When I found him at a different checkout with my ID he was extremely condescending and rude to me. He could have politely informed me of the mistake I made and directed me to a different register instead of taking my purchases away and ripping my ID out of my hand. It's new. It's improved and probably the biggest Safeway chain out of MANY in this town and area. The store is clean and well organized. Once you know your way around it's easy to navigate and shop faster. I go in here on the weekend and it's never over crowded at the lines even if the parking lot makes you assume differently (it's big and packed but like others have said there is additional parking with elevator service for you posh people!)... Customer service in the store is what it is, folks are doing their job and not all want to extend the gesture to chat or really give off that positive energy that makes you feel so welcome in a store. There are a few checkers I do love to see and go to their lines when I can because they have good energy to exchange. The produce department is really fresh and really big. Their floral department and meat/seafood are also nice. They have a big wine section and a gourmet cheese section. They are trying to get fancy on us here. They even lit up the healthy and beauty section so you can shine like the star you are when you select your beauty products, lol. Their deli counter offers more specialty deli foods than more Safeways I have been too. They also have a Chinese take out bar, sandwich station, Safeway hot/finger foods station and a fresh sushi station which I will actually say is very decent. They are always behind the counter making fresh sushi and putting it out. They have tons of sushi to choose from including brown rice sushi rolls. I have not tried their sushi but it does not look hideous for store chain sushi. It's very fresh and if you want something made just go up and ask even if you see it out. You're a paying customer with rights. Smile. There is a sitting area in the store and also outside to eat there. They have an in store Starbucks too. Their seafood department has made it a point to rave on the intercom the last two weeks about their "fresh, no color added salmon on sale" which makes me chuckle every time I hear it. They use a lot of pep to lure you into that seafood trap... no fooling me but if you are looking for some line and hook tackle you may want to swim over and see what's up. read more

He flat out said no. Not even one paper bag! Extremely disappointing! This is THE WORST Safeway I have ever been to, which is unfortunate because it is in a great location and the store itself is nice. I have given this location 5 separatechances to redeem itself, but every time I have visited it has proven to be EXTREMELY understaffed and the employees do it seem to care. There are 2 of the maybe 10 registers open at any given moment, with lines snaking back into the aisles. 3-month update: Still only 1 star. Why? * Parking's ridiculous and getting worse, even on 'slow' days. * Hard to find basic merchandise, sometimes piled in the middle of a random aisle instead of the aisle that it's supposed to be in. Very hard to find even basic stuff. * Most important: The staff is just plain surly and slow. I've tried to give them benefit of the doubt, shop at non-busy times, be patient etc...but nope, it's just true; The people who work here just don't care or aren't trained or are chosen for their poor attitudes. They are routinely slow, unhelpful, unfriendly, downright surly and just a turn-off. In all departments. Memo to Safeway: I've tried, hard, to like this store as it's now the closest one to Los Altos downtown. But nope - you've lost my business. I refuse to return to this place. I have never encountered so many employees who have such poor attitudes and utter lack of any work ethic. Whoever runs this store should be fired. read more

THIS IS THE WORST SAFEWAY EVER!!!! Went there to order my brothers college graduation cake about two weeks before. The manager (a Latina) at the bakery said she didn't have time for another cake but will do this for me this one time. However I wish she never had. When I picked up my cake (at a time that the bakery was closed) it was totally different than what I had ordered. Instead of vanilla it was chocolate and instead of chocolate filling it was walnuts which I'm allergic to! On top of that the design was horrible!!!! Ung - what a chore it is getting in and out of the parking lot and even bigger chore shopping inside. Yes they've got a big selection, but the layout is a nightmare, and there's blackness everywhere. It's like two huge safeways with a big CVS in the meddle that you need to traverse to get your shopping done. I used to enjoy browsing the aisles in the old safeway, now I try to find what only I need without any doubling back and then leave. The young man, Blaine, helping me out with my groceries went to get a new handicapped scooter because the one I was in needed a re-charge. Probably the nicest safeway inside I've been to. However, terrible customer service. They started carrying non-homogenized milk that comes in a glass bottle for about 2/3 of a gallon. Each bottle takes a $1.75 deposit. I brought around a half dozen in and the customer service girl was unbelievably rude. She told me I needed to go to a recycling plant, and they can't return them there. I then insisted this was not the case and she closed the door and left me there standing. She was pointing at me to a coworker. I then went to a cashier who referred me to the manger. After over 20 minutes of waiting, the manager told me they indeed returned them. I never mind a little bit of eye candy whilst running errands and getting my grocery shopping done. now back to the other good parts about this particular safeway--it is a convenient, sort of all-in one: pharmacy, fruit/vegetable section, starbucks, usual supermarket stuff--but expanded selections and a great deli and bakery. It's conveniently located in the new San Antonio Square with plenty of ground level and upper level parking and an elevator. Great customer service w/ checkers as well as self-check out. Really bad experience in the meat department. I purchased several Prime filet steaks from the meat department and requested that they be wrapped in individual packages. The butcher was rude and the stainless steel counter was filthy with streaks of dried blood and goo everywhere. He dropped one of the steaks on the floor after it was wrapped and did not re-wrap it. When I got home I took the meat out of the bags and re-wrapped them again. I ate a steak and got some illness like dysentery for 5 days after eating the meat. I will never shop at this Safeway again and am rethinking ever shopping Safeway at all. I feel a distrust in the safety of the food handling. Safeway stores and its staff does not seem to care. I don't think that they train the staff in sanitary food handling. read more
