    Nice to know it's ORGANIC!

Recent update - March, 2025 - RAVING about the recent availability of TerraFresh Peruvian ORGANIC mangos. Every one has been edible when purchased, though shelf-ripening always helps. A few though, have been shelf-ripe from the get-go! What a joy to open the mango to see deep orange, soft, sweet fruit-meat inside. Either way, after shelf-ripening at home for a few days, or ripe immediately, these mangos are worth a visit to Avas.

You would think this place would be super busy and overpriced because it's in the downtown/popular area but it's neither and I loved it just for that reason! I was able to buy a nice bouquet of flowers for a friend quickly and easily at a really decent price of $12 and it wasn't busy at all even though the street itself was jam-packed! Definitely going back

Cute local market on Castro St. that has a good variety of things, from fresh produce, fresh bread, baking supplies, tons of cheeses, wines, etcetera. HeyO! and Pokebar are both located inside here as well. I come here often for: poke, and last minute grocery runs. +1 Fresh baguette! YUMM. Pretty cheap too! +1 Cheese selection makes we want to get everything! We ended up getting brie, and camenbert. +1 "Meats" selection...not too sure what we got, but everything here looked delicious too! (see pics) Overall, a stable spot on Castro that will probably be here a while considering the traffic that is always coming through.

This store has been my go-to store for grocery pickup through the pandemic Pros - They have a huge parking lot in the back (adjacent to the one with CVS) - They're fully stocked on most days .. even better than some of the local target, whole food stores - Staff is really friendly and respectful of covid guidelines - They even have a local deli for sandwiches etc. Cons The only possible con is the fact that they don't serve as many organic vegetables

When we arrived at home all 3 were icy. Texture was crunchy with ice instead of being smooth and creamy. The cantaloupe had a thick, chewy dry layer at the top which was disgusting. We assume it has to do with how the ice cream is stored in their freezer. Come to think of it, their freezer was very frosty and icy. For the price of these (normally great) containers of ice cream, this was a huge let down. After this experience we discovered Zanotto's supermarket in Sunnyvale carries Marianne's. We got a tub of lemon custard and it was not icy at all. It was very smooth and creamy, just like getting scoops at the Marianne's shops in Santa Cruz.

There are lots of uncommon fruits and veggies, like fresh jujube fruits, prickly pear cactus fruits, and specialty herbs and greens. It's a great way to support local businesses and farmers, while keeping excess produce out of the landfills. The open-air market style also allows for individual selections of produce, and considerably less plastic packaging!! Don't forget your reusable bags, but if you do, they sell some and they even offer green, compostable produce bags available for any quantity you are in need of. Foothill Produce is particularly great for discount deals on ripe produce if you are keen on same-day recipes. They also have a large selection of European, Russian, Polish, Middle-Eastern, and Jewish foods (fresh and frozen). The market always has apples of almost every variety, seasonal products, fresh breads and challah, and plenty of standard groceries as well. Fingers crossed for a bountiful 2026. If you're debating stopping by, let this be your encouragement.

Their prices have always been reasonable, and while there were occasional quality issues, they were easy to overlook. However, I've recently stopped shopping here as often due to a serious decline in the freshness of their produce. It's become common to see pallets of berries and other items that are completely moldy or rotten. Even if these items are discounted, selling produce in this condition is a health risk and shouldn't be allowed. I'm leaving this one-star review to get management's attention, please stop putting moldy products out for customers. I am more than willing to update this review and return as a regular customer once I see a consistent improvement in quality

Their mission and vision: Bay Area food pantries struggle to provide nutritious food for the local homeless and low-income population. In particular, fresh fruits and vegetables are rarely donated in edible condition, and higher quality produce is too expensive to purchase.
