Athena has become "the big city" in recent years... used to be just a whistle stop on the main highway. The locals rely on this store for basic survival provisions, especially when Winter hits. If you're looking for a townie chances are they will show up here before long. I like to patronize local businesses and always stop in here for a snack or something at least. The folks there are friendly and Athena is a really nice, friendly town. When I used to come here in the early 1980's the local cop used to eyeball me pretty closely and follow me around in his cop car until I left town. I guess they don't get many visitors showing up on Harleys. He must have retired or lost interest in me lately cuz I haven't seen him in recent years.

This is usually the go to place to get lunch when I am in town and need to grab something quick…read more I'm easy to please and usually enjoy anything you can get out of the hot case but the other day we ordered 8 cheese burgers for the office I work at and I wasn't as pleased (soggy like they put way too much sauce on it and cold) however since it was such a large order I don't really want to take too many stars off for it and they did have it all done at the time they said they would for us, and I still ate it so I can't really complain too much. Also appreciated all the extra fry sauce we got (places that actually give you enough seem rare!) and I really enjoy their salads, never had a problem with those. I've stopped in a couple times after work this week just to grab random things (hard cider, candy, etc) and it's always fine. It's just a small town convenient store that I have seen go through many changes over the years and when you don't have many options, you tend to be grateful for the couple that you do have. Edit: While I feel silly putting so much effort into a review nobody will probably EVER read, it feels fair to say I stopped by yet again on this trip and tried another cheeseburger. MUCH better this time, as I guessed, I think the one I had the other day was just sitting out too long for my taste (pretty picky about textures/bread getting even a little soggy). It's not a fancy burger but I appreciate that, and my personal preference is the slinner patties which (thankfully) is what they have. There are probably about four or five tables all together that I did not get pictures of. I know that when I was in high school this is where everyone would go and eat for lunch and I would assume that is still the case. It's like half gas station/convenience store and half almost a restaurant? Basically don't expect anything too fancy, but when it's not very busy, they're pretty quick to get your food out!

They come with fries that are the best I have ever had. I wish they were here in Milton Freewater or were closer so I could have them more often. The guys behind the counter were super friendly and chatty. I ended up ordering their tomato and burrata sandwich with pesto (which is walnut free, yay!) and it was truly one of the best sandwiches I ever had. I honestly did not expect much going in (I mean, it's in a gas station!) but I was completely blown away. The sandwiches are HUGE, and loaded with fillings, and the bread is fresh-baked ciabatta. I have paid triple the price I paid here (I think my sandwich was like, $12?) for meals that were not a tenth as good. My partner and my MIL were pleased as well. They are both meat-eaters and can attest that this spot does NOT skimp on the meat the way some sandwich shops do. In all, this is a great spot to come in and pick out some stuff for a party spread, and is a must if you are in Walla Walla for lunch. I will definitely be back.
