I like this Safeway. I don't like the people that shop there. Too many snobby, ignorant people giving their kids, other shoppers, and employees a hard time. So these complaints about how there's no hard liquor? There's a liquor store next door. People just expect this "secret Safeway" to have everything available for them always holding up lines over a stupid reason. That's why its small. For it to be convinient to old people that live in that area to find things and not walk for hours. Its not a one stop shop, geez. read more

I come to this Safeway often and the lines are always long. The store seems to be extremely understaffed. Whenever I go to customer service, I am left to wait (unacknowledged) for over 20 minutes. I highly recommend going to any store besides this one! read more

I just found that this review was not posted although I wrote it some time ago. But here it is because I can still remember that experience very vividly. I had the WORST EVER Safeway experience with the Assistant Manager Jonathon. He treated me like not even a person, and certainly not a valued customer. He wasted so much of my time by messing up big, and when I had to come back because of that, he did not even apologize. And he did all this sending me back and forth to no avail in order to not let me have the promised discount on items for which I printed out a shopping list from their store! This is the worst safeway store I've ever been in my life. There is a weird smell all over the store. But the worst part is the check out, half of an hour wasted in line, don't understand why do they have 2 registers open no matter what time of the day you go there. DO NOT DO NOT buy beer from this store. I bought a Heineken keg from this store the night before. The next day, when the more I drank the more diarrhea I had. Apparently, their keg was last the one on the shelf and leaked air which caused the severe diarrhea and their store employee1 Mayras and their manager refused to refund the defective product...... Moe, the sushi chef at Safeway Sharon Heights is a skilled at creating beautiful and delicious food. I purchased two of the special combination sushi platters for a Christmas Eve party and all but two pieces from the assorted rolls were left for me when I checked. Moe is interesting, his English is just ok, however, his knife skills and artistry are clear. I took a chance in going to Sharon Heights, which is a smaller branch, than the larger Safeway on El Camino because I've always thought that the sushi just looks and tastes better at Sharon Heights. This Safeway is on my way to/from work but I don't stop there very often. If I stop by in the morning to pick up something for lunch, I never know how long I'll have to wait for check-out. Some mornings there is only one checker and you can end up behind someone with a carful of groceries. The produce section is quite mediocre; I'd rather go out of my way and get produce elsewhere. Many of the checkers are just not very friendly. I don't need much but they can be pretty curmudgeonly. read more

I live in Woodside and I normally go to Safeway on Sharon Height, Stanford, because I find better display for food and nice home made soup. Today I had an unpleasant experience with a handy man who works in the store moving boxes or to fill bags at the cashier desk. I was looking at the range of soups that normally Safeway at this location display with little cups for tasting. I could not find any little cups available at the soup counter. I asked someone in the store about the tasting cups that are normally available for customers and he kindly offered me to taste the soup I wanted to buy with a small size cup. I felt a bit embarassed to use a small size cup for a small taste but I went ahead and try to soup I wanted to buy. Suddenly the handy man who was putting empty boxes in a cart saw me and without any reservation and respect told me if I had filled the cup and was having my soup in the store. I was not only embarassed for the unfriendly and rude approch from someone like him to embarassed me in front of my friends. I reported him to a floor manager, a young talk blond man, and a woman at the cashier desk where the horrible man now was helping to put items in a bag for a customer. The reason I am reporting this small incident is because I was offended and now I feel I have to shop somewhere else for a small amount of soup which I tried.. Beside I bought $45 of grocery. The man in question is a short, mexican looking with glasses. Thank you for you attention, hoping that no one in your store affront a customer in a very rude and embarassing fashion. This Safeway seems to be frozen in time. It's small, it smells funny and the lines are very long right before the dinner hour. God forbid you should get any help at this Safeway: Most of the clerks feel that they have more important things to do, and management is doesn't care. In fact, there seem to be more managers at this location than clerks. On the rare occasion that I have gotten assistance, the employees are both nasty and uninformed. Why is this Safeway even there? Seems like the new owners of the Safeway corporation could save a bundle of money by closing this one since there is a much bigger and better store just down the road. DETERIORATING!! I've been going to this store for years and saw it expand after taking over the old small drug store next door and have watched it slowly deteriorate over the past few years. I've had it and have started going more and more to Trader Joe's for many items, Amazon and Walmart.com for delivery of staples and Costco for meats and cheeses. This store drove me away from any Safeway anywhere. I don't care if the store is cold or if checkers are chatty and smiley. There is one checker ( the big guy) who has probably been there over 20 years who still seems to be a poud Safeway employee. I do care if shelves are not restocked and frozen foods are limited -- they are often out of some of Stouffers items and no longer seem to carry Stouffers Ravioli as they once did. The last 3 times there both the 1% and 2% milk were either out or so far back in the case that I could not reach them and I have 35" arms according to my shirtmaker. Further, I could not find ANYONE at the customer service counter to have someone fetch some for me. I could never find anyone in the wine dept to help me find the wine I have been buying for years which no longer seems to be there. These are just a few examples. The produce dept appears to be going all organic for which they can charge higher prices which is the biggest ripoff of the consuming public but that is another story. The only people in the store seem to be the checkers and they are too harried to leave their station to help. I guess management is pressured to keep costs down (they seem to have fewer employees) and if they are making the numbers things will not change. It's their option in a free economy but when the business starts to decline it will be in a freefall. They appear to continue to be supported by older customers in the neighborhood who don't want to travel farther and a lot of Stanford students with daddy's credit card. Our comments will not change them so we are the ones who must change. As I said it is a free economy and they can do what they choose and so can we. read more

Several weeks ago, I was in the area with my family for a couple of days, had just landed at SFO and on the way to the hotel we stopped at this store because I needed some milk for my toddler. Two registers were opened and the lines were really long. As I am trying to decide which line to stay in to pay for my few items (things like a small bottle of milk, a bottle of water and a bag of chips), I hear one of the employees say "I am opening Register 3". As I happened to be right next to register 3, I proceeded to put my things on the belt. The next thing I know, is an employee yelling at me (literally yelling) and telling me to get away from there because the next person in line should go to register 3, he claimed that was what he said. The lady who was next in lady (elderly) told me it was OK and I could stay in front of her, but I said it is no problem, I will move behind her so I shifted the toddler on my hip and picked up my items then I told the employee that there is no need to be ugly, I did not hear him say "next in line", I only heard him say that register 3 will open and since I was right there I assumed it was OK to get in line. He proceeded to berate me and continued to yell even though the elderly lady behind me assured me that indeed, the employee did not say "next in line" he only said he would open register 3. I was stumped. Never in my life have I been treated this way in a store, especially while I am holding a toddler and a bottle of milk while my other child, age 8 is whispering "Mama, I am scared". In the meantime, my husband reached us at the line and told the employee that he needs to stop yelling because he is disrespectful and completely out of line. My husband (who was a few feet away looking at a display) also heard him say that he would open register 3 and told him so. He told the employee that first of, he did not say next in line, secondly, he needs to shut up and stop yelling at me in front of our children especially since he has no reason to do so, and even if he did, he should not because that is not how things get resolved. The employee then proceeded to threaten my husband, asking him if he knows what can happen in a parking lot when people leave the store and that he should watch it unless he wants his family to miss him. I put my small basket in the middle of the isle and left the store, very shaken. I should specify that we did not curse out the store clerk nor did we say anything disrespectful. We just asked him to stop yelling and being ugly with me. I will never, in my lifetime set foot in another Safeway. read more

This is the Safeway that time forgot. They also forgot about customer service and keeping their employees happy. The checkout lines go down the aisle during the two hours before dinner, and the managers don't seem to care. If I could give 0* I would - this store is the worst!!! from San Francisco all the way down to Sunnyvale the customer service here is terrible (I go to all of them due to family locations and I am on the road a lot, worked in most of the stores myself when I was younger). Get this I worked for Safeway for about 12 years during it's Superior Customer Service days..what the heck has happened. The absolute worst checker today he actually rolled his eyes at me more that twice because I wanted cold items together. (I was shopping on my lunch and wanted to put the cold stuff in the cooler) I was bagging all the other items myself - old habit and they no longer pay attention to what they bag together. This whole store has a bad attitude- manager do SOMETHING!! This store is located in the Stanford - upper Menlo Park area (big $$$$) maybe that's why everyone that works their is pissed off? It also has no deli or hard alcohol because they made a deal with the landowner - Eric's deli is in the strip mall and there is a small liquor store. It also never seems to have enough checkers and they are mostly SLOW with super bad attitudes. It is small so they don't have a lot of the items you to Safeway for which hen means double stops. I think they should just close this store and let someone else have a go at like Whole Foods or Sprouts at least their employee's are nicer!!!!!! read more

Nice area and I kind of like going to a smaller Safeway. But last few times I've gone in there the cashiers are a bit rude and rough around the edges. They need to go through some training to improve on customer service. One thing I find slightly annoying is when the cashier starts to talk to either another cashier or a customer they know while they're ringing you up or bagging. It's like, "Can you just focus on me and then later chit chat with your buddy?" Also lines can super long since it's a smaller store especially on Sat. Last time I was there they were almost completely sold out of bananas? I don't think I've ever seen that at a store? It was rather odd? Also sold out of non fact milk. Which is quite rare. I wish they had the automated check out so I wouldn't have to interact with human cashiers. It's always shocking/amazing how poor the service level is in the U.S versus other countries like Japan. 15 minutes to checkout during a quiet time of day. Worst front-end employees ever, they are so unhappy. They don't say hello, goodbye, or thank you unless you do so first. Today at 3:45 they had 3 lines open with at least 8 people in each. The third line was manned by a manager and he shutdown. I asked why he was closing even though he was he was a manager, he stated that he had to go home. Strange behavior for a manager. 5 minutes later another manager opened a line and charged my for an item but she forgot to bag it. When I returned from my car for the item. She said that I left it top of her register and that I had to prove I paid for it. I showed her that it was the first item on the sales slip for and reminded her that she had bagged my items for me. Avoid this Safeway if you can. It is time for Safeway to sell this busy location to another grocery store that can provide basic customer service. read more
