I appreciate that this Safeway location offers public restrooms. A lot of places don't anymore, and having that option is genuinely helpful. The bathrooms themselves aren't particularly clean, but they're functional, and I'm grateful they're available. That said, every stall door currently has a sign that says "Aloha, locks are broke, please knock." Unfortunately, that system does not work. I am a female and just had a man walk in on me while I was actively using the restroom. That's uncomfortable and avoidable. A printed sign is not a substitute for functioning locks. For a major grocery store, this should be addressed promptly. Basic privacy in a restroom is not optional. Still shop here, but please fix the locks. Super expensive but all the prices seem higher in Hawaii vs a couple years ago. Their Deli section is the best part of the store with tons of prepared food you can get to-go. I love how they have mainland staples like the lemon vermicelli pasta and broccoli salad but also TONS of local Hawaiian specialities like the purple potato salad, Namasu salad, Teriyaki chicken, Spam musubi, sushi, poke, ube cake, etc. etc. read more

I appreciate the Drive thru pickup for the convenience. But the best part is the shoppers who collect the order really do an excellent job selecting the items. Produce selection was lacking, but I was there late at night which could have explained the shortage. The produce here matches the quality of most other Safeways I've been to. For fresh produce, I do prefer the local farmers markets to this, though the convenience is definitely a selling point here. read more

Did all my food shopping here for the week I was in Kona, and we ate mostly in the condo. The good is that the prices are a mix of what you find on the mainland and what to expect in Hawaii. Some things seemed overpriced, but most things didn't seem significantly more than what I spend at home, The great is that they have several versions of poke, all really good, but every supermarket sells multiple versions of poke, and that was most of my dinners while I was here. They also had a decent selection of Japanese staples, including the little packet of seasoning I cheat to make sushi rice with, so I always had warm rice for my poke. The bad was that the selection was hit or miss, and lots of things could be bare. There were times I went in for certain produce I saw 1 day, but the bin was empty when I went back, and there was some a few days later. read more

Nice and bright store in Kona but things can get a little expensive. Good selection of things here. Someone not quite in their right mind said some inappropriate things in the store, hopefully an isolated incident. I'm visiting from California and we were looking for maraschino cherries and we could not find them anywhere. There was a young lady named. Mahae, she was the sweetest young lady. I can honestly say in my life I've never had someone give me such great customer service. She ran around the store like she was a track star. After a long day of traveling & a delayed flight, I took too long of a nap and woke up at midnight without any supplies. I started to panic a little when I was having trouble locating much of anything still open. I saw this Safeway was 24hrs, crossed my fingers & headed out. She's a big, clean beautiful store that's perched upon a gentle hill north east of Ali'i drive and below the Hawaii belt. The employees were all very courteous & welcoming. Some of the shelves had empty spots but we were able to locate everything we needed. There is also a pharmacy attached. I grabbed a sandwich from the deli and it was well made & fresh. I was also able to donate to the Lahaina fire efforts at the register. Mahalo for saving my evening, Safeway. Now I can wake up not starving and with coffee & juice tomorrow morning, without having to run out somewhere else to get it. read more

Auwe Safeway Kona! Don't waste your money here instead go to KTA or Sack n Save and support a local company! I went in to buy a Maile lei and it was priced at $115.00 yes $115. I thought it was a typo and asked the worker and she said that's what her manager told her to price it as, so I had the worker call the store manager name John Parello/Pirello and he said that it's always been that price (Obviously he is not local) which is not true as I bought these leis in Kona Safeway in the past in this location. The manager did not have the professional courtesy to come down and speak to me in person so that speaks volumes..FYI the lei smelled like bleach as I had to examine this $115 overpriced lei. This past weekend, I was on the Big Island for work. We didn't finish until the evening so I just went here to grab some stuff to take back to the hotel to eat. I got a pre-packaged tofu salad. It was pretty damn amazing, especially for getting it from Safeway. All the register lines were decently long, and the self-service kiosks. But the nice employee who was manning the self-service kiosks saw me waiting, called me over, and rang me up. That was awesome. Only negative was that I walked up and down the aisles 3 times trying to find the damn beef jerky. Couldn't find it. Read the signs, and still couldn't find it. Ended up grabbing a couple packs that were by the register--- but it was peppered flavor which I only eat as a last resort. read more

Safeway has officially become a mess. Not only have they been charging more, but the shelves have a lot empty spaces, especially for stock items, i.e. fatfree cottage cheese, quinoa, just to name a few. Their shelves are being stocked at peak times, especially by outside vendors with dry goods and condiments. Why can't they have their stocking done when the store is practically empty? They are open for 24 hours for crying out loud! We're struggling through the aisles while carts with empty boxes keep piling up to the sides, blocking passages and food items. It was madness, and the store was not even overpopulated.... I gave it one last try because it was my husband's favorite store, the operative word here is indeed WAS. I am exasperated by this store. The checkers are great, but it is just not worth it. I am never ever going back there again myself, Foodland is just as good even though it's smaller. So is KTA which is a local store.... Sigh, even Target is better, even though they don't have a wide variety. read more

Well laid out store with a wonderful deli and meat selection. Make sure you have their shoppers card as this saved us over $50 on a $180 shop. As with everything on the Island, it's more expensive than the mainland and they do run out of things, especially items on special. We usually divide our big shop between the Walmart superstore and here. The veg selection is vast and of great quality here. read more

So very disappointed with Safeway here! Bought a Ribeye Steak on sale looked great from the front side, but when I got home and flipped it was all fat and grizzle. I went back and got a refund no questions asked. I decided to get some chicken instead. Packet said AIR CHILLED free range etc.. I do not eat frozen chicken as it gets very chewy. Made it for dinner and turned out it had been frozen at least once if not twice.. chewy and horrible!! DO NOT SELL CHICKEN THATS BEEN FROZEN AS AIR CHILLED!! It's misleading at best! If it's frozen put a sticker on it to let people know, I would not have bought it!! Food is so expensive now that this should not happen!! read more

Do not order groceries to be picked up from this Safeway, my experience was a complete disaster. I went to the store to shop for some items that I needed but I had placed an order ahead of time that I just wanted to pick up and go. The woman who brought out the order did not have a print out of our receipt which led to a lot of confusion since we were missing several items from our order. When I pointed this out she said oh yes I forgot your fried chicken. So she went back into the store and instead of getting fried chicken and she grabbed a whole roasted chicken. Upon further investigation I noticed that we were missing our butter yogurt eggs and lettuce. She said that since it was Monday after Thanksgiving they didn't have these items in stock and that's why they didn't make it into the order. So she and I went back into the store only to discover they did have everything that I ordered whoever picked the order order Just didn't bother to fulfill these items. Needless to say it was a complete waste of time and my other groceries just sat in the car getting warmer and warmer as I located the items that were left off of the order. Rene in the deli department is awesome. Ordered a sandwich from her and she made several recommendations on how to take it to the next level. This included cooking my bacon then removing the excess grease. Can't say I've had anyone from any other Safeway offer me that option. read more
