Super expensive but all the prices seem higher in Hawaii vs a couple years ago. Their Deli section is the best part of the store with tons of prepared food you can get to-go. I love how they have mainland staples like the lemon vermicelli pasta and broccoli salad but also TONS of local Hawaiian specialities like the purple potato salad, Namasu salad, Teriyaki chicken, Spam musubi, sushi, poke, ube cake, etc. etc. read more

Safeway - They have an awesome Deli section with tons of local Hawaiian dishes - Grocery Near Me - Kailua Kona, Hawaii

Safeway online order pickup service is sometimes fine but when it's bad, it's terrible. Waited 30 minutes in parking lot, called store, went INTO store and told woman at service desk I couldn't wait any longer cause I had to go to work, but I would come back later that night. 15 min later I get an email saying order has been picked up. It's been 3 weeks and I have called twice for a refund on the $141.62 order. They keep telling me to wait another 7 business days for a refund. I will never use their drive up service again, it is the opposite of time-saving! Also, twice I found mold on the deli-prepared sandwiches. read more

I appreciate that this Safeway location offers public restrooms. A lot of places don't anymore, and having that option is genuinely helpful. The bathrooms themselves aren't particularly clean, but they're functional, and I'm grateful they're available. That said, every stall door currently has a sign that says "Aloha, locks are broke, please knock." Unfortunately, that system does not work. I am a female and just had a man walk in on me while I was actively using the restroom. That's uncomfortable and avoidable. A printed sign is not a substitute for functioning locks. For a major grocery store, this should be addressed promptly. Basic privacy in a restroom is not optional. Still shop here, but please fix the locks. I did try calling to speak with someone but the phone was never answered. read more

While I typically love Safeway (freshest best selection around for quality food) recently the old skinny female cashier (I plan on getting her name, writing to the CEO and store manager) berated the young female bagger (appropriately 16 years old) for double bagging my heavy full paper bags of food (which all fell apart as it was raining) she was so ugly to this bagger. I assured the bagger 2x she was doing a great job. Between personal and the company I work for I spend thousands of dollars each month. While I k ow it's not much to a big company. I'll look elsewhere to shop. read more

Produce selection was lacking, but I was there late at night which could have explained the shortage. The produce here matches the quality of most other Safeways I've been to. For fresh produce, I do prefer the local farmers markets to this, though the convenience is definitely a selling point here. read more

We visited this location a couple times while visiting Big island. This Safeway Is big and they carry more items than we expected. Prices are reasonable. Parking is plenty. We loved their ready to made food items and the flower section. read more

I appreciate the Drive thru pickup for the convenience. But the best part is the shoppers who collect the order really do an excellent job selecting the items. They bring it out with a smile and thankful, friendly attitudes and I enjoy that they read the "notes" that we can add to each item. Mahalo Safeway for amazing customer service. read more

The most overpriced Safeway I ever bought from. Food is ok as a subway chain store. Service is on par. Interior, counters are similar. Only price of food is doubled. read more

Has a wider selection of most produce Love the selection of potatoes Appreciate the produce clerks for always answering questions The flower selection is great with Friday specials The sliced cheese frequently goes on sale Nice selection of yogurts Thank you Safeway read more

So excited to reunite with Safeway, my favorite. This large store had more than we needed during our vacation on the Big Island. We over-bought! Prices were reasonable, especially since I'm a reward card member. The parking lot is huge. read more

So far the best dubi chocolate I usually do not like dark chocolate however the flavours are so rich and creamy it takes away the bitterness that dark chocolate has if I find a better dubi chocolate I will update also I am open to suggestions to try new the first chocolate I tried it tasted as peanut butter I was not happy with that then I found this and was amazed how different it was and delicious which gave me the realization of now I see what is making this trend a big deal they sale this at Safeway here in Kona read more

Store is always so busy with long lines. Not only on $5 fridays. Gas pumps is a hit or miss with contactless payments at the pumps. I do like the little mini mart but their lines are slow and long also. Maybe a self check out in the mini mart? read more

My AMAZING PRE ORDERED THANKSGIVING DINNER!!!! SO INCREDIBLY DISSATISFIED!!!!! I Called 3× to confirm my order, the deli staff laughed and walked away from my husband when he tried to get our dinner. Very nice fresh and artistically flowered staff helped find the dramamine and benadryl that was so desperately needed

Nice and bright store in Kona but things can get a little expensive. Good selection of things here. Someone not quite in their right mind said some inappropriate things in the store, hopefully an isolated incident. We ended going to the KTA Super Stores more often than the Safeway, as KTA has more Asian items and take-away prepared food. read more

Did all my food shopping here for the week I was in Kona, and we ate mostly in the condo. The good is that the prices are a mix of what you find on the mainland and what to expect in Hawaii. Some things seemed overpriced, but most things didn't seem significantly more than what I spend at home, The great is that they have several versions of poke, all really good, but every supermarket sells multiple versions of poke, and that was most of my dinners while I was here. They also had a decent selection of Japanese staples, including the little packet of seasoning I cheat to make sushi rice with, so I always had warm rice for my poke. The bad was that the selection was hit or miss, and lots of things could be bare. There were times I went in for certain produce I saw 1 day, but the bin was empty when I went back, and there was some a few days later. read more

This place should be closed down by the health department as will be my next complaint too constantly rotten produce but this last time was the Finish when I bought a bag of lines couldn't tell they were totally rotten until I took the bag apart and found that more than half of them or stinking rotten this place has no integrity and the people working there want to poison the locals disgusting and for some reason the site won't allow me to download the photos read more

Not sure if it's on purpose, but they can up charge you on poke bowls. Got a previously frozen poke bowl and was charged $12.99 and after confirming with the rep it suppose to be $10.99. read more

After a long day of traveling & a delayed flight, I took too long of a nap and woke up at midnight without any supplies. I started to panic a little when I was having trouble locating much of anything still open. I saw this Safeway was 24hrs, crossed my fingers & headed out. She's a big, clean beautiful store that's perched upon a gentle hill north east of Ali'i drive and below the Hawaii belt. The employees were all very courteous & welcoming. Some of the shelves had empty spots but we were able to locate everything we needed. There is also a pharmacy attached. I grabbed a sandwich from the deli and it was well made & fresh. I was also able to donate to the Lahaina fire efforts at the register. Mahalo for saving my evening, Safeway. Now I can wake up not starving and with coffee & juice tomorrow morning, without having to run out somewhere else to get it. read more

I'm visiting from California and we were looking for maraschino cherries and we could not find them anywhere. There was a young lady named. Mahae, she was the sweetest young lady. I can honestly say in my life I've never had someone give me such great customer service. She ran around the store like she was a track star. I truly appreciate her, and I told her that I was gonna make sure I gave her a great yelp review, if the manager is seeing this, please give her a raise. She was great.!! read more

The market is very close to our Airbnb, so we came here twice to get stuff for breakfast. It's easy to find stuff, but I'm also astonished to see how expensive grocery is in Hawaii. The store itself is clean, and bright. Self check out works fine. read more

Don't pay for delivery service. I ordered 1.5 lbs of poke at $6.49/lb and at first they said there wasn't any through chat. Then there was a $50 charge for 2.07 lbs @ $22.99/lb, but when it was delivered it was 1.59lbs @ $29.99/lb. Wouldn't ever recommend something like this to anyone. read more

Auwe Safeway Kona! Don't waste your money here instead go to KTA or Sack n Save and support a local company! I went in to buy a Maile lei and it was priced at $115.00 yes $115. I thought it was a typo and asked the worker and she said that's what her manager told her to price it as, so I had the worker call the store manager name John Parello/Pirello and he said that it's always been that price (Obviously he is not local) which is not true as I bought these leis in Kona Safeway in the past in this location. The manager did not have the professional courtesy to come down and speak to me in person so that speaks volumes..FYI the lei smelled like bleach as I had to examine this $115 overpriced lei. Kona Safeway is not it. read more

This "lady" was so rude. 09/02/22,0715am. "Excuse me...may I order a sandwich?" She actually threw the lettuce onto the table she was working at gave me a pissed off stare. It's not as if I was rude. And she was the only one at the deli. And she WAS already making sandwiches so... I was like, "...that's ok. I get something else" Instead i bought some crackers and salami for my flight back to San Francisco. I was really looking forward to a good deli sandwich for the 5hr flight. Oh well.... read more

Excellent service. Came here to get some items to make pain killer cocktails. The gentlemen stocking not only helped me to look for coconut milk, after we failed to find any he continued to look and found some options then went around the store looking for us. I was so amazed at how kind and helpful he was. He really made my day. The store itself is very clean and organized, I will say their stock is poor but I can't blame them since they are in a high tourist area. read more

This past weekend, I was on the Big Island for work. We didn't finish until the evening so I just went here to grab some stuff to take back to the hotel to eat. I got a pre-packaged tofu salad. It was pretty damn amazing, especially for getting it from Safeway. All the register lines were decently long, and the self-service kiosks. But the nice employee who was manning the self-service kiosks saw me waiting, called me over, and rang me up. That was awesome. Only negative was that I walked up and down the aisles 3 times trying to find the damn beef jerky. Couldn't find it. Read the signs, and still couldn't find it. Ended up grabbing a couple packs that were by the register--- but it was peppered flavor which I only eat as a last resort. read more

Kelly in the drive up and go is an absolute nightmare. She takes it upon herself to cancel your order (and claims she can't refund your money). When you complain about it, she cancels orders "because of what you said about me." I've been told there are have been numerous complaints about her (from other customers as well as other employees) but they won't fire her because "she's the fastest shopper." Doesn't management care about its customers? read more

The workers are extremely rude. I haven't met one there in four years that has been kind or courteous. The quality of the food is. It up to Safeway standards and don't get me started on their prices! Worst on the island. Better off with one of the other stores. Don't bother. They need some staff training. read more

Well laid out store with a wonderful deli and meat selection. Make sure you have their shoppers card as this saved us over $50 on a $180 shop. As with everything on the Island, it's more expensive than the mainland and they do run out of things, especially items on special. We usually divide our big shop between the Walmart superstore and here. The veg selection is vast and of great quality here. read more

Do not order groceries to be picked up from this Safeway, my experience was a complete disaster. I went to the store to shop for some items that I needed but I had placed an order ahead of time that I just wanted to pick up and go. The woman who brought out the order did not have a print out of our receipt which led to a lot of confusion since we were missing several items from our order. When I pointed this out she said oh yes I forgot your fried chicken. So she went back into the store and instead of getting fried chicken and she grabbed a whole roasted chicken. Upon further investigation I noticed that we were missing our butter yogurt eggs and lettuce. She said that since it was Monday after Thanksgiving they didn't have these items in stock and that's why they didn't make it into the order. So she and I went back into the store only to discover they did have everything that I ordered whoever picked the order order Just didn't bother to fulfill these items. Needless to say it was a complete waste of time and my other groceries just sat in the car getting warmer and warmer as I located the items that were left off of the order. Not a great experience definitely avoid this Safeway read more

Safeway has officially become a mess. Not only have they been charging more, but the shelves have a lot empty spaces, especially for stock items, i.e. fatfree cottage cheese, quinoa, just to name a few. Their shelves are being stocked at peak times, especially by outside vendors with dry goods and condiments. Why can't they have their stocking done when the store is practically empty? They are open for 24 hours for crying out loud! We're struggling through the aisles while carts with empty boxes keep piling up to the sides, blocking passages and food items. It was madness, and the store was not even overpopulated.... I gave it one last try because it was my husband's favorite store, the operative word here is indeed WAS. I am exasperated by this store. The checkers are great, but it is just not worth it. I am never ever going back there again myself, Foodland is just as good even though it's smaller. So is KTA which is a local store.... Sigh, even Target is better, even though they don't have a wide variety. read more

Whewww - think I'm done with shopping for a week. Picked up quite a few staple supplies, in regular sized packaging. Decent assortment of many items. Had to search for a shopping cart. So very disappointed with Safeway here! Bought a Ribeye Steak on sale looked great from the front side, but when I got home and flipped it was all fat and grizzle. I went back and got a refund no questions asked. I decided to get some chicken instead. Packet said AIR CHILLED free range etc.. I do not eat frozen chicken as it gets very chewy. Made it for dinner and turned out it had been frozen at least once if not twice.. chewy and horrible!! DO NOT SELL CHICKEN THATS BEEN FROZEN AS AIR CHILLED!! It's misleading at best! If it's frozen put a sticker on it to let people know, I would not have bought it!! Food is so expensive now that this should not happen!! read more

February 15, 2022. My friend was visiting from Texas, and I wanted to show her the new Safeway. We had a little list of things to get for dinner. Angel hair pasta, and ground pork, were on the list. The pasta shelves only had a couple boxes of lasagna noodles and some wheat pasta. The rest completely empty. No ground pork at all, we checked the meat section, butcher counter, and frozen meat section. If you are a vegetarian you were in luck, but the shelves were not stocked. Very disappointed. We went to KTA. read more
