Honestly, love choice mart! Absolute a go to for any grocery needs, etc. especially for us residents in cap cook. Ono fish selection is always "choice" lol for real it's fresh and their poke is bomb/decently priced. Store is always clean, produce section is great, good choices of health foods, organic, gluten free, vegetarian, alternatives. Staff is awesome! Everyone working knows where things are, has great suggestions, especially in the deli seafood/meat section, they're all super helpful and friendly. Ample amount of parking, Ace is right next door for garden/home stuff and Choicemart is open 7 days a week and usually til 10pm.. i think? I'm always grateful for this store as there is not much else southward on the island. On a holiday weekend unlike all the big stores in Kona it was still well stocked and had everything I needed. This is a small grocery well outside the tourist areas. So mostly locals shop here. It is a typical grocery store. Meat counter, dairy section, produce section, etc. Nothing really special about it, but maybe a little cheaper than someplace like KTA. Worth a stop if you're driving by anyway. I took my disabled friend to shop there. The employees were more interested in talking to each other about whether they were going to have internet at home than informing customers that the ebt was down for the whole store. Their excuse was that they had signs posted. There were no signs when we arrived. One register had it posted, making it look like that particular register was down. The other register had the sign facing the cashier! They should be verbally letting people know not just placing signs that blend in with other signs in that mess of a place. Luckily, I could pay for her groceries myself. Every time I go in there the cashiers are talking to each. This is simply bad customer service. It's a super small grocery store but seemed to have everything you'd need if you live or are staying in the area. We did by some baked goods because they looked so good! In the 1800's Greenwell General Store existed. Today, you will find a newly remodeled historic supermarket. Independent, family-owned and operated by the Greenwell's, ChoiceMART, for the past 18 years, has been the only grocery store that serviced south Kona. Last week, KTA, a competitor moved in, down the street. Competition is a good thing. ChoiceMART needed to be updated and remodeled. In 2017, the transformation began. It is still underway. I enjoyed the warm welcome of the fresh cymbidium orchids that now grace the entrance. The pastel color varieties were appropriately selected for the spring. Henry Nicholas Greenwell, commonly known in the islands as H.N., was the son of a wealthy English family from England. After his fathers passing, his inheritance was meager, wanting to see the world, he joined the Navy. After serving, he set out to Australia to settle. A career path that did not pan out. While visiting Oahu, he worked for a short time, in a general store. Which intrigued him to want to open his own store. But he needed reassurance that the islands really did have the proper infrastructure in place to ship goods to and from the Mainland on a regular basis. The isolation of the Hawaiian Islands would always keep it dependent on this infrastructure to keep store shelves stocked. Once convinced, H. N. migrated to The Big Island. It was here, he decided to construct, his own, small general store on the then, very remote south Kona coast, Today, his great grandchildren own it as well as the shopping complex the supermarket anchors. They learned to be entrepreneurs through their hard working grandfather. Their family fortune includes major land-parcel holdings that ranch cattle and farm and roast Kona coffee. If I'm in the area, I always stop in this store. The variety is always interesting and the prices are excellent. I often purchase dried fish and fresh aku here. It's so delicious with poi :) And I know these fish varietals are sourced on The Big Island, which is important to me. Opelu in Hawaiian, or better known as mackerel, was usually fished half of the year, the other half being kapu or forbidden. Our ancestors understood that opelu was not only a main food source, but was also important in the food chain to feed larger fish such as ahi, yellow fin tuna. Aku, the spinjack tuna, could only be fished when the opelu were kapu. Fishing was allowed only in certain seasons, for certain species. The Hawaiians knew that fishing this way would conserve the natural resources and keep their main food source plentiful. I also come here to purchase Galangal or Thai ginger. It is not easy to find this ingredient. It's sharp citrus flavor is essential in Thai dishes. It looks like ginger but the flavor is completely different. Not as spicy. I also use their shredded coconut in Thai desserts and baked goods. I find it holds up well in dishes because it is crispy not soft like commercial brands. The other item that I enjoy is fresh parsnips. They are so delicious boiled and mixed with celery root & potatoes in a tri-root vegetable mix. Much more flavorful than the normal mash potatoes. Cacao pods can also be found here. After cutting the pod open, you can munch on the beans . When they are first removed from the pod, the beans have a white, mucus-like coating around each bean. It is sweet and yet tart. It's a bit like a very sweet lemon and is incredibly refreshing on a hot day. I always gravitate to the large selection of bulk nuts, lentil varietals etc...so much to choose from and fun to browse. The natural organic section of the store is the area I spend the most time combing through. I also picked up my usual items that I use in my daily juicing recipes. Goji berries, maca powder & bee pollen. I also like the flavor profile of their garam masala. When cooking Indian food it is extremely important to either make your own spice mix or buy one that is fresh. This one, I find has the right balance. Indian or Thai cuisine also requires young coconut, which can be found here. The young white coconut meat offers a sweet flavor that is soft enough to be eaten with a spoon. I use the water inside to further flavor my dishes. Sometimes I can't resist not just drinking the water inside, when chilled, it's refreshingly delicious! read more

Uhh great poke for just $9.99 a bowl. Which includes a ton of rice the poke and a choice of vegetable. I got the sesame ahi poke with kimchi cucumber and you must get it! The cucumber what actually my favorite part but the poke was delicious and worth it. It's a bit of a drive from Kailua Kona, but it's worth it. Choice mart is a small supermarket, similar to their KTA. From produce to seafoods, We went here to get the chantilly cookie sandwiches. It was introduced to us at a family party and everyone loved them. My father in law loved them so much he even went there at opening before 6am and waited for it, but he was told they weren't able to make it until after 8am so he reserved some and came back later In the day. The cookie sandwich has the right crunchy taste and the chantilly icing in the middle is sweet. It's very popular with the kids. I'm not really into Chantilly anything whether it's cakes or icing part or flavorings, but from my tastebuds it's actually a pretty good dessert item. For some reason, none of my cards would work, so I called the store and asked if there's anything that can be done. The flexibility and creativity of the manager didn't cease to amaze me for the two days she spent coming up with options that might work for me. Birdie went above and beyond my highest expectations to find a solution to a problem that shouldn't have been hers to solve in the first place. People who tend to complain about the prices probably do not live here. Visitors will be shocked, our prices are higher than the mainland. Choicemart is of course more expensive than big box Walmart or Safeway. Small businesses always are, and have to be. I'm just grateful they haven't folded (a la Kamigaki) I know in advance to buy milk (or any of the other really high priced items) when I am in town or at Costco. Other than that, I love the produce and shopping at Choicemart, and I love the convenience of only having to drive 3 minutes from home as opposed to 30 to go all the way to town. Customer service has been mentioned in previous reviews from others. I have never had a problem, and everyone is always nice. Nice place , however , park behind it not in front otherwise you have to climb stairs . Is a nice store, clean and quaint, lots of food options like deli stuff. We were there the day it was pouring so we got really wet. They have paper bags but prefer you take your own, we had to ask for bags . The clerk didn't offer to bag for us. Not a bad thing we are capable just different than Home. We got our vegetables here , with rat lung worm , we opted to not buy from the locals. I love Choice Mart in the sense that it's got so many products for such a tiny store. And their prices are actually very cheap. You'd think for a small market like that, you'd have high prices. But I've found that a lot of their products are actually cheaper than a lot of bigger markets in Hawai`i. Like Foodland/Sack-n-Save or KTA. The one thing that makes me give this place their 3-star rating is the service! It SUCKS so badly. Nearly every single time I've been here, the cashiers are rude, don't smile, and don't even talk. The best all-around choice for groceries in the southeast part of the Big Island. They've got great local fish that changes frequently. They've even got a decent selection of organic and other highfalutin stuff that you don't normally see outside of the bigger cities, but you'll pay a pretty penny for it (think: $5.49 for a tub of Brown Cow yogurt.) No complaints at all, really. We were renting a house in Captain Cook and needed groceries. We're food snobs. It was definitely worth the extra scratch. This is the most convenient grocery store to south Kona. The selection is decent, the prices what you'd expect. We were there to visit the deli for cheap food stuff to go. On our first visit, near supper, the deli was well picked over but we still found a little bento of chicken and rice, prepacked salad, and avocado wraps. And beer, for my husband. This is our second "Baby Moon" on the Big Island and this time we decided to stay on the Kona side of the island. My Husband booked us a nice little beach house in Captain Cook which is a little ways out from the business of Town. We needed to grab some baby items for our Son one afternoon and looked up the nearest Grocery Store to us and ChoiceMart was it! We were pleasantly surprised to find there was a good amount of parking. When entering the grocery store we were greeted with friendly smiles from the Clerks and while making our rounds through the store we got stopped at least twice by Workers asking if we needed assistance with anything. Very friendly staff and great customer service! My Husband was happy to find that the store carried so many Organic choices (he's a big Organic guy lol) so he was able to buy his Kombucha and Nut Butters that we normally can't find in regular grocery stores. We have since then been back to ChoiceMart three more times and the last time I was introduced to the FAMOUS "Chantilly Cookies"! Two chewy brownie cookies with a Chantilly filling in the middle. I only ordered five but I'm already planning another order before we leave the island! If you have a sweet tooth then this is definitely something you need to sink your teeth in! read more

One star, because the employees are nice folks. Everything else about this store blows. They have people like us who live in Captain Cook and points south, by the short hairs. The prices are absolutely ridiculous, the store feels like a damn walk in freezer all the time, and the deli needs serious help. The only thing that might be half decent is some of the produce, especially the beef. It is not wildly marked up to fleece the crowd. Apparently the owners' families have been doing this for decades. I cannot wait for an enterprising business owner (we know you're out there somewhere) to start a store in the area that undercuts ChoiceMart's prices by at least a third. One of our favorite things about the Big Island is the abundance of fresh, local, organic food. Finding a dependable place to shop can be more challenging. Choicemart is a huge gem for those who like the freshest, organic, local fruits, vegetables, fish, etc. The variety of selection is striking! The ChoiceMart is a large, well organized grocery store that has EVERYTHING under one roof. And if they don't have it in the store, and you need it, they can get it for you. From the freshest organic produce we moved on through the store to find an wide selection of local fish. The Ahi Tuna is the freshest I have ever seen in a grocery store. Choicemart has a fantastic selection of Grass-Fed Beef and the taste of the meat is amazing! Beyond the Fish and Meat section is a terrific selection of Organic foods. Everything you may be used to, as well as many island tastes. (I am now hooked on Coconut Syrup - having never tried it before - and it is fabulous on pancakes or as a sweetener). Between the organic section and the Bakery/Deli are isles and isles of every grocery item imaginable. The deli will make sandwiches to order, along with many pre-made items for a quick grab to go. The wine/liquor section is quite diverse and the wine offerings are terrific. The quality of wines available is a nice surprise and we were able to find quality wines to pair with our fish and meat dishes. Choicemart is near enough to Kona that for vacationers to shop. Too bad that we found this place five days into our eight day trip:-(. It was great. We got some beef and fish and some other ingredients to cook them. It may have been pricey, however, it was much less expensive than a restaurant meal and allowed us to have a nice evening in. They also had produce which was good, since we missed the farmer's market. It's was close to the resort we were staying in and much closer to us than Safeway or Walmart.
