just now New A tall white boy with hat working night shift DRAGGING two shopping carts passed my while I was carrying a basket shopping and after I told him it was a narrow path, his cart dragged behind him HIT my waist. Where to start? If I was a family on a budget, I wouldn't come to this Safeway. Almost everything here is 30-40% higher in price than competitors like Trader Joe's. That being said, there are reasons to visit Safeway. Their Boar's Head Artisan sandwich shop makes amazing sandwiches. I like their sandwiches more than many independent and chain sandwich stores in the area. I also think the bakery does a solid job and makes quality cakes and other baked goods at a fair price. If I didn't feel I was being price gouged by the rest of the store, my review might be more favorable to Safeway overall. read more

I have been going to this Safeway ever since I started day tripping in Foster City. It's strangely a very interesting store because I am getting items at prices that are even lower than what my local Safeway has. If you are a Foster City native, this is your local store. This is a store where you can not only find some food and drinks but also some hot foods that you can bring to your workplace to eat. Like the Smart and Final nearby there is a diverse array of people who work here. They are more than willing to help you out when you need help. It's also a store where it's easy to navigate. You should have no issues finding whatever you need. This Safeway is very clean as well. I will come here again. Drawback: The only issue I have here is parking. It can be a little hard to navigate between which one is the right arrow and which one is wrong. read more

Customer service at this store has gone so downhill. We explained to the checker Maria that my husbands Safeway app wasn't finding the just for you deal that was advertised. She argued and then refused to let us just run the transaction under my account instead. So we asked to void the transaction and try again but she got some front end manager who was very rude and also wasn't listening. She demanded that I must have used the deal already even though I just got back from an out of state vacation. She argued with me, took my phone out of my hand without permission, and spoke to us very rudely. I have been a customer of the Safeway on Hillsdale for over 15 years. I have always received good customer except for one employee about 2-3 years ago. I don't usually play the complaining customer, but I did complain about this person. There must have been multiple complaints because she was let go shortly after my bad experience with her! I appreciate the relationship that I have with the regular and long term employees, and the newer ones have been great, too. It's hard work, but I always try to make it more fun for them while I am there. read more

What a difference since my initial review. What used to be a sad and crowded store with grumpy employees has turned into a happy bastion of wonderfulness. I actually look forward to shopping here and sometimes spend way too long just chatting away with the lovely people who work and shop here. I'm so in love with the meat department staff. Although I miss Maggie, Darryle is an absolute angel! He always has my back with a smile and the most wonderful sense of humor. And then there's Kim, who is such a hard worker. Honestly, every single person in the meat department just makes my day! There is nothing in this world that can make me change where I shop now that they have a staff that cares and really loves their jobs. This is my favorite Safeway. I don't know why they have such low rating, it looks like all Safeways have two to three star ratings, I guess because they have so many customers shopping there, you can't possibly make everyone happy. This Safeway is large and it has everything that you ever need. It's pleasant to shop here, it's very well organized and people who work here are helpful. Like anywhere else right now, employees come and go and it's hard to have any consistency in their training and knowledge but overall they provide pretty good service. This Safeway is located in the nice neighborhood across the street from the Laguna. I always take a little walk along Laguna when I shop here, it's so pleasant. read more

It is June 20th today and I just got home from buying a frozen pizza and It's moldy. They sold me expired food, this went bad June 17th!! Never shopped at a grocer that was this irresponsible, I guess if you're shopping here you need to look at expiration dates because they will sell you expired moldy food and then not let you return it. Unfortunately when you order from Safeway you will not get the $20 discount as a first time buyer. I spent alot of time finding products on their website, and then making the order only to find out that I would not be getting the discount. So I decided to go in person and make purchases and I could only carry so much. I had hoped that since my car is out of commission that I could rely on the delivery but its turned out bad. I purchased an expired Brie cheese from the deli section. I made a second trip to the store to exchange it. The employee who helped me had no care that I had to waste my time coming back and was actually annoyed that I handed her two more expired cheeses that I found before finding a non-expired cheese to exchange. There was no apology or attempt to make amends with a coupon for the inconvenience -- only attitude that I was trying to get an item that I had paid for. Who would have thought a chain store Bakery would be so good? I sure as hell didn't! It appears to go really overlooked too with many people opting to go for the fancy shmancy bakeries when you can get something just as good (if not better) here when you do your grocery shopping. Although the Grocery store is pretty crappy the bakery section is quite the opposite for a few reasons: - Large selection of Breads, Cake's, Cookies, Donuts and Pastries. - Very reasonably priced and if you are a clubcard member you also get additional deals. - Always kept pretty well stocked. More-so on the weekdays but if there is something not on display (during the weekend) they will almost certainly have more out the back. Just ask. I mainly come here for the fresh bread rolls or a sneaky treat for hubby but have been known to get the odd cake or pie from here when I either cannot be bothered to make it at home or just don't have the time. The quality of a lot of the items are better than some of the other hyped up bakeries on Yelp and for as much as a quarter of the price. I also love that you can order cakes and pies to be collected on any day of the week even Thanksgiving and Christmas morning! Which I have done myself and made cooking that huge meal so much less stressful knowing the dessert was already taken care of. Mmmm... I went there for battery purchase today, and there is a sign with a button to ask someone to unlock the section. I pressed the button and wait for 5 minutes, no one helped, so I went to customer service to ask a lady to help, she told me to wait , I waited for 10 minutes and when she finished sth she's gone. I was like maybe she went to bathroom so I waited for another 10 minutes and she never came back , I look for the whole store and hardly found someone to help , so I asked the gentleman who's at self checking section to help me , he helped me right away and it only took him less than 3 minutes. This was my favorite Safeway in the Bay Area until I visited last week. After over a month of not leaving my house, I decided to venture in with my N95 mask to grab a couple things. I was initially impressed by the employees outside, ensuring customers had masks on and being overall helpful with carts. Then, for the next 30 minutes while I shopped, I kept hearing 2 loud females laughing, joking, yelling with each other. It was annoying because the store was so quiet overall but anyway, I continued to shop. I get to the cashier area and to my shock, the 2 females I kept hearing all over the store were actually employees! They were being extremely loud with each other and their peers and the most surprising of all, they kept taking off their masks! I can't enter the store without a mask, yet these 2 young ladies (black hair, potentially high school or college age) were having an absolute ball being disrespectful and almost seemed like they were doing it to gain attention. Safeway, please advise these young ladies on proper work ethic - this was my first interaction with anyone outside my home and I couldn't believe it. This happened on Thursday, April 23 around maybe 8pm - I tried to get their names but shocker, they didn't have name tags. read more

Occasionally between 1100am - 200pm (lunch rush) a customer will show up at the sandwich counter with a list of multiple different sandwiches to be made, essentially disabling the service for other customers until the order is complete. If there is a phone ahead order or online order option, it would be very useful and a good idea to let cutomers know about it. read more

I hate that store. Self-checkout is a joke as the paranoia-level security settings activates if you slight touch the scale or remove an item from the scale before paying. I.e. you *have to* put a scanned item to the designated place, it can't stay in your cart. Like if you wanted to steal $0.05 by cheating on bananas or something. The overall store was fairly pleasant and I have no criticisms. Normally I wouldn't review a grocery store since that's sort of just a day-to-day thing, but I had a memorable and fond memory from Rosa of the bakery when we visited last month. We needed a birthday cake and she was very sweet & accommodating the whole time we interacted with her and had our cake written on. I feel that the bakery on El Camino in San Mateo (near the San Mateo Credit Union) is better. Came to the Foster City location on a Thursday, around 4:30pm and they were out of stock on many items; even the hot food section! Also, why did they change the recipe for their in-house baked peanut butter cookie??? Now the cookie has way too many peanuts. I just want a cookie, not clumps of peanuts. This store could really use some security. I go here often and I've seen quite a few concerning situations. I've seen robberies and rude customers yelling at or disrespecting employees which kind of make you concerned for your safety when in there. I do wish there was some sort of enforcement at the door to make sure situations like these don't happen. Please take note of my review, I love the store, the food and the Starbucks drinks which the employees there are always happy to deliciously make but I'm concerned about this stores management not putting enough effort in keeping its customers / employees safe. read more

I would like to give more stars, but this store is always understaffed, never enough checkers and each register usually has 8+ people waiting in line. The sushi at this specific location I would absolutely never buy because it looks not fresh. The tuna always looks dark not bright pink like normal.... There is a different Safeway near where I work (not in foster city) and the sushi is beautiful and super fresh. Everything else here is good except the amount of time it takes you to check out.... Never enough checkers, even at 10pm..... Side note, whatever you're paying Marlon, it's not enough. He is super fast, works twice as hard as everyone else at Safeway, and tonight again, he was the only checker. The line was moving fast, but when there are 8 people ahead of you with full shopping carts, it's gonna take a while..... Give you're employees and customers more support. We've started doing our majority shopping elsewhere and this is EXACTLY why. There are other grocery stores that you don't have to wait so long to get out.
