We left Haverstraw marina around 6:00 AM on Saturday 8/6 and arrived to Pilots point about 6.5 hour later. From the moment we got there to the moment we left 2 days later I was nothing but impressed with the dock hands, the dock master and the marina. Beautiful clean bathrooms, BBQ all over the place, nice pool, brand new club house and all around great facility. I want to mention again the dock hands that unlike in other marinas actually know what they are doing! Also they were all very nice and friendly. The marina have deep water so I hat was not an issue as my boat draft 4.2 foot. We got slips right by the fuel dock and there was plenty of space for all 4 boats. The fuel dock is by far the busiest fuel dock I have seen. We will surly be back to Pilots point!

Since it was raining, I decided to get some rain gear for my trip. Milford Boat Works had just what I needed. And, you know how the saying goes, if you have rain gear, the sun will be shinning! We selected the M4 based on where we wanted to drive the boat and the type of water activities we are interested in. Bassett Yacht and Sales Boats is a Monterey dealer that is close to us which is how we met Dianne Bassett, owner of Bassett Yacht and Boat Sales. From the very first time I spoke with Dianne she was personable, knowledgeable, and very patient, despite our obvious lack of boating experience. Dianne took the time to ask appropriate questions such as: where we planned on doing most of our boating, how many people would be on the boat, and the types of activities we wanted to do with the boat--really getting to know my wife and I and ensuring we made the proper boat selection and didn't pay form something we did not want or did not need. Dianne also kept our budget in mind when making her recommendation. A place to go…read moresomewhere else Smith Neck boat launch area is frequently called the Great Island boat launch. It has a huge parking area and a pretty decent ramp but it can get pretty shallow in very low tides. Very large boats can be a bit of a problem but it's a great place for canoes and kayaks. Once off the ramp you have many options. You can go north up the huge Connecticut River or south down into Long Island Sound. Or if you have a canoe or yak you can explore the area around Great Island. You can't actually go on the island because it is so marshy with little solid land. Just as well because a huge number of large birds nest there. Better just to look and not disturb. It's a very easy area to get lost in a yak. Lots of small rivers and inlets and some very tall grass and reeds, so at times you can't see where you are going. No problem, you'll end up somewhere. The Black Hall River, the Duck River, the Back River and the Lieutenant River are all accessible from the ramp. However, if you decide to go up some of these you better make sure you have enough tide to get back out or you might end up carrying your boat back. Also a good idea to bring strong bug repellent if you decide to go into any of these small inlets. The flies can be fierce and want your blood. A extremely nice place to launch your boat, especially if you have a small one. I've been here a zillions times and never had my truck broken in to. Even though it can get a bit crowded during the summer everyone has always been pleasant and people here seem to enjoy helping and socialize with other boaters. Smith Neck is definitely one of the nicest and most pleasant launch sites on the Connecticut coast.

Directly behind it is a bird sanctuary. It is perfect. The sanctuary is fenced off so you wont be disrupting any habitats but some of the birds (depending on time of year) will get very "curious" of you and check you out. I have never had a real problem with it, though. The fishing is great up the Black Hall river as well and as a previous commenter mentioned just be sure to check tides because you could get stuck.

For the past 12 years I had services my 90hp Yamaha engine at Boats Inc and they were a very…read moretrusted service destination. This year, dealing with the service department became a $1588 nightmare when having to change gas filters. During our first trip of the year our engine (having used Boats Inc, to change oils and winterize the engine) stalled and we had to be towed back to shore. It looked like there was some problem with our gas supply to the engine (most likely clogged gas filters). We made a service appointment on a Monday morning and dropped off the boat, with an understanding that they would diagnose the problem by Tuesday and provide an update. Tuesday, and Wednesday went by without hearing anything. On Thursday afternoon I eventually called back to inquire what was going on. The explanation I received was that the gas filters were indeed clogged and the technician had replaced 2 of the filters. They needed a 3rd one that was not in stock and had been ordered. I was then told that they would provide me with an update. I was not given an estimate for the cost either. On Friday I had to call again and I was told that they had replaced the filters, but the gas tank had some micro openings and that they would not be able to guarantee their work, if I did not replace the tank. They proposed to look up the cost a replacement and let me know. Again, I did not hear back from them. Finally, on Saturday I called them to inquire what was going on, only to hear that they had not found anything. At that point I asked to pick up my boat, only to be told that the gas tank hose was not connected to the engine anymore and that the technician was out. I got frustrated and asked them to reconnect the hose and that I would go by to pick up the boat. when I got there, I was told that I could just put some silicone around the gasket and that could prevent any future issues. I then received an invoice for $1588 that indicated that they had put in 8 hrs of work !!!! on the engine (the price include a 2 hr labor discount)... When checking online the suggested repair price was closer to $ 400- 500 indicating only a couple of hour of work for my particular engine and problem. The whole interaction and charge has completely evaporated any speck of trust that I have for their service at this point.
