Wolves do not like warm weather so do not visit when its warm. Today it was a chilly fall day. We were there an hour or so before they opened. I'd heard best to be in the first group to visit and we found it made a huge difference. We got to spend a good amount of time with several wolves. The volunteers were informative and we felt very safe. Recommend bringing spare shoes as we stepped in some ... poo. We both really enjoyed our visit and highly recommend it. They give discounts for military both active and vets, fire or medical professionals. We arrived way early so only car there for at least a half hour and the wolves all started howling and making puppy sounds. It was just the coolest moment. I will never forget. I am short so had trouble seeing any wolves because of the tall fence. But it was just magical.

We had heard great things about this zoo and were eager to visit. That finally happened over the…read moreLabor Day weekend. First, this zoo is very large in terms of walking time and animal exhibits. It's very spread out, meaning lots of walking to see it all. We welcomed that, as more space equals more animals. The first thing that we saw and really liked was the Cheetah experience near the beginning. A quick 15-minute show that showcases a porcupine, serval cat and two cheetahs. The seating area fills up quick so be sure to arrive a good 15 minutes before the start time if you want a seat with good viewing. Another cool exhibit that I really enjoyed was the small cat house that was entirely in the dark. Only dimly lit, this was a unique look at many small species of cats that thrive nocturnally. I've seen many of these cats before, but never in a dark exhibit like theirs. It's very cool. One thing that was a head-scratcher was the number of exhibits that said 'closed' or 'animal not for view today' (or something like that). There were far too many exhibits like this, and that's what drove our experience down. The Australia exhibit was also a disappointment. One kangaroo, and he was in the housed area. No other animals in the open area after walking down there, and only penguins on the other side. I've been to small zoos with a far better Australia presence. I don't want to knock this zoo too hard, it's a good zoo with a lot to see and do. I would say my rating is more based on comparison to other zoos of this size and even smaller.

All of the birds of prey had been fed. When we walked by you could see the motionless white rates that had been laid out for them. We walked on down the trail which was well marked and walked along the stream and the Stiller River. Mosquitoes were a little more active here. When the skies turned a dark shade of grey we headed back up the trail to the car. We may come again to do a run when the path dries out a little more.

I definitely recommend taking note of the program schedule on their social media or when you first arrive, because the programs add a lot of fun to the day, particularly for older elementary kids. Even better, all of these are included in your entrance fee, no nickeling and diming here! We attended a planetarium show with an astronomer who narrated a trip around the universe's moons, hands-on experiments for ages 5+ in the Do Lab on exothermic and endothermic reactions, a science theater show on the fire triangle, and an animal encounter with an opossum on the Discovery Zoo Vet Stage. All of these were really excellent and amongst our favorite parts of the visit. In between shows, we explored the many galleries and spaces available. There are some really nice little kid spaces where they can get hands on and do pretend play, like a play pizza kitchen, working with animals like a vet, and the solid waste exhibit (recycling truck). There's a toy brick area with neat Lego displays and hands-on Duplo building. For the dino fans, there's a paleo lab with fossils on display and paleontologists working in a lab with windows where you can observe what they do. (Note - this was trickier to find - the door is off of the museum restaurant, the Eco Eatery). The Treehouse is a really nice and quieter space, as it encourages birdwatching with binoculars and bird feeders. The water play area was a hit although it was missing a couple of pieces for some of the hands-on activities. For the older kids there are some more reading-heavy informational panels in exhibits on topics like Ancient Egypt (they have a mummy on display), the Sonoran Desert, or the multi-space space rooms around the planetarium on the sun, the universe, and the exoplanets. There's a mini zoo on the second floor, with a lot of neat animals to see. We must have been there at the right time, because a lot of them were very active, such as the river otters, the naked mole rats, and the new toucan. The two story climbing tower immediately catches eyes and offers a fun way to access the different levels. It even has a section that goes up higher than the second floor, plus a number of slides of varying heights to try out. Because of the breadth of areas contained in Boonshoft, they have what may be the most impressive list of reciprocal agreements I think I may have seen at one place. If you have a membership to your local science museum, zoo, or kids museum, it's worth asking when you come in if they have an agreement with them. We got 50% off on the spot through our zoo membership, which was nice. There's a nice sized parking lot out front, and the many staff members we interacted with were very helpful and informative. You can bring in food or utilize the restaurant on-site. In addition to the restaurant seating, there is a good seating area in a room across the hall with some nice windows where you can enjoy a packed meal.

The waterway is one of may favorite parts of the museum and glad it's still up and running 20+ years later. We actually went to watch the Mesmerica 360 show in the dome theater. That was rather mundane to me but that's not the fault of the museum. My biggest peeve of the visit was seeing the us flag was still being masted when it is in tatters. I posted in my 'check in' and I will post again here in my review that it's time to retire this flag and replace with a fresh replacement. Whomever is in charge of the grounds here should be embarrassed. Please do better.

I'm not sure if this was something to expect, but after visiting other farms, the entry fee somewhat shadowed the entire experience. The animals seemed not well kept, the corn maze was extremely underwhelming, and there was trash litter all around. We tried to save the experience by grabbing some donuts on the way out, they only had one flavor which added onto our disappointment. We personally won't attend again, especially after driving 35 minutes to get there. If anything, drop the entrance fee and clean the place up a bit. There's potential to make this spot great, but my group was disappointed.

It's a little pricey to get in and you're not going to find a large deal on anything offered…read moreinside. However, People watching and talking to new people is off the hook here! There is always something new walking past you and people in costumes, plays, music and knight fights....I could go on. Take your time and watch a few things and talk to people and you could make it a half day or more of entertainment. I myself do not go in costume but there are plenty that do having fun. And if you don't go in costume no one looks down on you. All age ranges are at the festival.
