Before I started going to this gym, I was pushing 200lbs and near 30% body fat. I decided I needed to make a change and better my life and my health. I decided to do the full MMA program there. At first I was very nervous, but upon my first class, coach Julio greeted me with open arms. Let me begin by saying I have absolutely no experience at other gyms and therefore can't compare. I've also never trained or even got into a fight in my life. With all of that said, I can't say enough good things about this place. I'm a skinny lanky dude and when I saw pictures of all the people who fight here, I was super intimidated. The stereotypical "MMA Guy" after all is the complete opposite of me! I have been greeted with so much kindness and camaraderie, and though I am still probably terrible, Julio and everyone else has taken me under their wing and helped me tremendously. So far, nobody I've met is the stereotypical MMA Guy at all. Everyone is gregarious and really kind. No one rolls their eyes when they are partnered with me and everybody just wants to help. I've definitely worked out and trained in a lot of different ways. I've done circuit training for a while, lifted weights, and did yoga for a bunch of years. This is by far my favorite of all of those. You get an insane workout, will feel muscles you didn't even know existed, and stay engaged the whole time (as opposed to running...just my opinion. :) This place also turns out a lot of really good fighters that constantly compete. It certainly doesn't have to be a route you go, but it's just good to know that their instruction is top notch and competitive enough for that. Having trained in many different gyms/martial arts schools in many parts of the world, I can honestly say Saekson's Muay Thai is a martial arts gem tucked away in the Valley but becoming famous worldwide for upholding a high standard of excellence in Muay Thai. The attitude of the gym is excellent and welcoming to both seasoned vets looking to sharpen their weapons for war, or newbies curious about entering the world of martial arts. Coach Julio is a wealth of knowledge and inspires his students with a refreshing no frills but laid back attitude. There are no egos at this place and there is a great sense of community at this gym. Which is honestly refreshing in this day and age of MMA and traditional Mcdojos trying to make a quick buck rather than provide a place where students can learn, grow, and improve themselves. Also one of the biggest hallmarks I look for in finding the right place to train is the amount of ACTIVITY you see at a gym. A gym with little to no activity is a gym that in my opinion has become stagnant, complacent, and comfortable with what it has become. It no longer desires to better itself and improve. All traits that are detrimental to the growth of a martial artist and really people in general. That is not the case here at Saekson's. Whether it's the competitive team of amateur and pro fighters who can be seen fighting in everything from local events to even the UFC, energetic classes, or simply enthusiastic students putting in work before, during and after classes the activity at Saekson's is infectious and truly inspires and motivates you to get better. I did my first personal training session yesterday with Coach Julio Trana Sr. & it was great! I so happy I made the decision to sign up. Coach explained everything to me in the way I was able to understand quickly. I don't think I've broken a sweat or had a better workout, ever. I woke up this morning feeling that good workout soreness, and surprisingly I saw some muscle progress in my arms already. I've trained for a long time now (At another gym) and I thought I was pretty good, until I walked into this place. The coach knows his stuff. He's a really great trainer and a better friend. The people there are very nice and they make anyone feel comfortable. If your a first timer new to the world of Muay Thai or have many years of Muay Thai experience this is the place for you. This place popped up on my yelp to review so I decided to share my experience from a year ago. I was here for about 3 months. I had visited Thailand and fell in love with Muay Thai and wanted to learn. Being a bigger girl I was always intimidated to join a fighting gym ,but finally got the courage to pursue my dream. I researched alot of places and thanks to the yelp reviews, I thought this was somewhere where i could finally feel comfortable and learn. The whole experience was awkward and uncomfortable. No one wanted to be my partner and the coaches didnt even acknowledge me until the 3rd or fourth time I was there. And it was a small enough class to realize someone new was working out . Completely opposite from the reviews I read. I'm sure it's the people who know the coach who are writing the reviews. Because I definetly did not feel welcome. Anyways it was so uncomfortable that I decided to leave. Having made no real connection with anyone, even though I gave my all in class and worked my ass off at a new thing I was trying to pursue. 3 stars because I actually lost 15 pounds with the workouts and training. Not worth paying for feeling unwelcomed though. One time I even was asked to leave because the sparing would be too difficult for me, even though all saeksons promos say "all levels welcome." Do you know how humiliating it is to show up to a class only to be asked leave. Ugh I should have got my money back right then. Instead I went into the other empty room and trained by myself. Van nuys Mma is a great gym to train at wether it be for learning self defense getting into shape or if you are looking to compete. I have been training there for more than a year and I can say I wouldn't want to train anywhere else. The environment is very inviting and the people are friendly. This gym is a hard-working family. There's many other nice gyms out there, they'll collect your monthly membership fee and tell you what you want you want to hear. I've been training at this gym for like about a month, and I love it because I'm a pretty heavy set guy and I'm losing weight quick while also gaining muscle. Not only do you get a great workout and great trainers, the people that attend the class also motivate you and teach you. They also have a lot of people fighting which is fun because your training with people that are actually preparing for championship fights. The fights are very awesome to go to, especially when you are cheering for the people that go to our gym. This class is awesome I highly recommend it to everybody whether your a girl or guy or even a kid. My little brother also trains with a group of kids there. And he loves it too. I've learned a lot of Muay Thai moves from Julio and all his fighters. Try one day and you will see what I'm talking about. read more

I had never put on a pair of gloves or fought a day in my life however I was 40 something and felt like my life was slowly being taken from me. I didn't have the energy to be the type of parent that I wanted to be, something needed to change. I can't thank Julio Trana and Saekson Muay Thai enough for turning back the clock. I personally attend the Muay Thai class and I could honestly say it is a great place to get a workout, learn to defend yourself and also have a good laugh or two. Everyone that attends the class is very friendly and will gladly help you with your technique if needed. What can I say this gym speaks for its self, try it once and you will see. They have an amazing Jujitsu Instructor in Alder Hampel. The class is very easy to get along with, you don't have to be a super amazing cool guy athlete to be part of this gym. There are many different levels of students ranging from super duper beginner and really really ninja type dudes which is pretty cool. The one thing i really love about this class is that everyone learns that's for sure. The Muay Thai class is super vicious, I have not taken that class but the guys that they are putting out are are handling business that fr sure. read more
