I brought my 5-year-old son in for a free trial class to see if he would be interested in jiu-jitsu. From the moment class started, I was amazed at how engaged and focused he was. I've never seen him listen so attentively or follow instructions so well in any other sport or activity. The energy in the room was fantastic, and the instructors did an excellent job of keeping the kids focused while creating a positive and encouraging environment. They were firm when needed, patient, and always willing to help my son throughout the class. What stood out to me the most was the culture of teamwork and support. Several of the kids went out of their way to help my son, and it was great to see the older students taking an active role in keeping the younger kids engaged, attentive, and included. It truly felt like a welcoming community. Overall, it was an excellent experience, and I highly recommend Gracie Barra to any parent looking for a structured, supportive, and confidence-building activity for their child. read more

Gracie Barra - First day - Muay Thai Near Me - Northridge, California

Gracie Barra Northridge has been great for my boys--and I ended up joining too after seeing how effective and useful jiu-jitsu really is. The coaches are patient, structured, and genuinely care about everyone. The environment is positive and welcoming, and there's a strong focus on discipline, respect, and confidence. My kids look forward to training every week, and I've had a great experience myself. Definitely recommend for anyone looking to get into jiu-jitsu. read more

My son started at Gracie Barra when he turned 4 years old. He was reluctant to take any martial art, but I insisted he learn the basics so he could learn to protect himself without throwing punches or kicking. I chose this studio because of a referral from my best friend who's kids compete in tournaments. While my son is slower and less athletic than the other kids his motivation is to keep getting the next level up. I like how the coaches know the kids by name and take the time to instruct with demonstrations and watching them closely while they grapple. I tell my son he doesn't need to win, just keep trying. After a year and a half we are still here twice a week trying our best. He's about to earn his grey and white belt and I'm proud so of him. Thank you to all the coaches for encouraging him to never give up. read more

Gracie Barra - My son and his professor. - Muay Thai Near Me - Northridge, California

BEST DECISION EVER! I have always wanted to try jiu-jitsu since I was a young gal and read the reviews online to give me the confidence to finally walk through the doors of Gracie Barra Northridge last October at the age of 40 years old, and I am SO grateful I did. Not only has it given me the confidence I was seeking, but it has also helped me have much more awareness of my body and has taught me discipline and consistency . The big BONUS of signing up is that I have found a beautiful community of people who are supportive and encouraging. I love this place and cannot thank it enough for how much it has changed my life! PS, the women's class on Monday / Wednesday's at 6 pm is fantastic! Professor Teri is warm, inviting, and brings so much fun to her classes. If you are a lady thinking about joining BJJ, I highly recommend GB Northridge- you won't regret it! read more

They do a great job of making the classes fun while still teaching discipline and technique. It is a wonderful community and I've seen such a boost in their confidence since they started. We love Gracie Barra and we especially love our son's training ng with Denner! What a great community with support and kindness always.

I just went inside for a quote. I have two daughters, a 14 and a 16-year-old. They're both girls. They were trying to charge me $299 for each teenager which comes out to be 600 basically or 199 and could only go bi-weekly so basically $400 for both bi-weekly I love martial arts but this is getting out of hand 600 for two teenagers a month is ridiculous. I'll be trying other gyms around the area. read more

Overall it's a good class, only thing is I wish the coaches were more attentive to the children and prepare them for competition. The ratio of kids to coaches is uneven so you can see some children don't get the attention they need to excel. read more

Our kids have been training at Gracie Barra Northridge since 2018, and we couldn't be happier. There is truly no other place we would want our children to grow. The environment here fosters the essential life skills they need both on and off the mats--building confidence, discipline, and character. It's more than just a jiu-jitsu gym; it's a community that truly cares about the development of the next generation. I would highly recommend to any parent looking to have their kids join! read more

Look no further you have found the best place for your child to practice juijitsu. After trialing many places in the valley we have settled on this gem in northridge with professor Jason who I would also consider a master child educator. There is something about professor Jason that just commands respect. His tone, his diligence, his ability to run a class of children ranging from 4-6 years old with ease. This is the real deal. With many assistants to the professor he is equipped with a master team. I'm so proud of my boys that have joined Little Champ empire. Although there was a short adjustment period my boys have begun to learn and thrive enjoying each day that they attend. Professor Jason and the other instructors have the patience of saints. I seriously pray that they are blessed in so many ways because they are doing the work of angels for these kids. The schedule is very flexible. For little champs you have the opportunity to attend many days after school. After reading a very long post in my next door neighborhood watch I was affirmed that self defense (particularly jujitsu) is one of the best ways to ward off bullies. It takes discipline, focus, flexibility, skill and technique to keep coming to juijitsu class. You have to be brave and you have have a thirst for wanting to know more. You have to be the type of parent that values focus, discipline, and dedication to self defense and you have to want these things for your child. Feeling safe and confident are what the children of today need. I knew my boys needed to do something else besides T-ball and soccer. They needed to be part of another family. A family they can grow strong with. For any sports league the kids on your team change, the coaches change and you may never see many of the other players or coaches again. Gracie Barra is different. These kids will continue to the next level and many of them remain in classes as adults and then some of them come back to teach the classes. It's a lifestyle that can come full circle with endless possibilities. This is the type of family you want your child to grow up in... one that demands respect and is full of mentors of all types. I would always find my 2 boys wrestling together and they needed more boundaries and I felt they lacked self discipline so I was looking for the right type of class to fill this need. They are molding into the ninja of their dreams and at the same time they are learning to protect themselves. I know that everything they learn will make them more flexible, more patient, more focused and more safe. I want my boys to develop into the best version of themselves and I am confident that Gracie Barra can do that for them. read more

Review for Tiny Champs Class The Tiny Champs class has a lot to offer, particularly when it comes to the quality of instruction. The main instructors are excellent--they take the time to teach effectively and ensure that the children understand and improve their skills. I especially appreciate Coach Jason's stern yet fair approach, as it helps maintain discipline and focus in the class. However, some of the assistant instructors could benefit from being more vocal and assertive in their interactions with the kids to create a more balanced teaching environment. On the other hand, the class does face challenges with overcrowding. There doesn't appear to be a system to limit how many children can participate per session, which leads to days where there are simply too many parents, sibilings, etc with no place to sit and ultimatly end up standing uncomforably, while blocking views of other parents (especially on the small mat). This not only diminishes the quality of instruction but also creates chaos on the mats, especially when dealing with kids who act out. Also, It would be beneficial for the management to establish stricter guidelines for parents to ensure that siblings not participating in the class are supervised and do not disrupt the environment. Overall, the class has great potential and skilled instructors, but they really need to address the issues of crowd control and facility management would greatly enhance the experience for everyone involved. read more

World class, excellent instruction, provided by very knowledgeable, friendly, and humble instructors. The training environment, from the instructors to the students, and the facility itself, is absolutely first class. Everyone is super nice, friendly, ready to learn, and highly competitive all at the same time. Our 9-year-old daughter has been attending class for about a year, and I am thoroughly impressed with her physical developments, mental focus, and interest in improvement. We are thankful to be a part of this team and family. If you are interested in learning patience, discipline, and techniques for your child, give Gracie Barra Northridge a shot. This review is long overdue. Gracie Barra Northridge has been my second home for quite a bit of time now. Professor Romulo and his entire family and staff are changing lives for the better every single day. They certainly have improved mine in so many ways and for that I will always carry a grateful heart. Jiu Jitsu has made me a better husband, father, son and friend. Humility, hard work and goal setting that has been taught to me inside the gym is seeping into all facets of my life outside the gym. I have more self control and confidence. You forget you are training with multiple world champions. There is no ego inside those four walls. I look forward to introducing my daughter to this gentle art when she is old enough to experience it. Many blessings to everyone at Gracie Barra Northridge and much more continued success! Where can I start?? There are so much to talk about and so many reasons to give FIVE stars!! My 9 yr old son has asthma. He tried everything. Soccer, basketball, baseball, Tae Kwon Do...!! None of them he couldn't keep up with!! As a last result, we gave a shot to Brazilian Jiu jitsu. And... What a choice!! Not only he found a sports he could keep up with and push further, but also he LOVES!! And on top of that, he learned the best way to handle his "bullying" situations. He didn't have to act physical, or "violently" at all. It was all about the confidence and inner strength he had built through BJJ. He learned to stand up for himself!! I owe all these to Gracie Barra BJJ-Northridge!! I know things about martial arts myself, having Tae Kwon Do degrees and Judo and all... Some schools do make kids "violent"!! Some schools or masters or coaches do give kids wrong ideas about learning and knowing a thing about martial arts make kids to think that they are stronger than others. I mean stronger outside!! I've seen it and made them too violent and too competitive!! But here in Gracie Barra BJJ Northridge, the coaches handle all these VERY well. They just know how to push them to become strong inside AND outside and at the same time make sure kids are having FUN!! They help them to build inner strength. And they make sure kids are enjoying BJJ!! I've seen troubled kids, spoiled kids, or whining kid became responsible, disciplined, focused, and playful at the same time. Trust me!! I know...!! My son was one of them...!! Ha Ha!! Thank you, coach Jason, Peter, Pedro, Mike, Sean..., and many more!! And of course, Professor Romulo!! It was a long and a little disorganized review but thank you for reading all the way. read more

I've been training here for about 6 years now and this review is long overdue. Started coming here primarily for my kids. Their kids program is top notch! The head kids instructor is a black belt (which you won't find at many other schools teaching kids as young as 4-5yrs old) and he is assisted by other high level jiujitsu practitioners. The professor and coaches are not just here for your kids during class. If your kids are competitors, you'll always have a coach in your kids corner at tournaments. Once I saw my kids training I got the itch to also get on the mats. Fearing I was too old to train I was encouraged by the friendly coaches and staff to give it a try. I tried it and immediately I was hooked. I slowly began learning everything I could about Brazilian Jiujitsu and not just the techniques but also the history of the sport. I learned about my Professor Romulo Barral the achievements and successes he's had in the sport and the hard work, dedication, and passion he has for it. He's committed to everyone on the mats and is always encouraging you to do your best. He exemplifies leadership by leading from the front. There are no handouts here. If you want to challenge yourself and if you embrace the grind, give this place a try. Joining this gym you don't learn jiujitsu. You live it. It becomes a part of you and everyone here becomes an extended part of your family. I love coming here and I embrace the grind with my team! read more

Unfortunately our time here was short. My 5 year old was not enjoying her time and I kept bringing her until she finally had a meltdown and I decided it best to pull her out. According to their contract we have to give a 60 day notice. This means they will continue to charge my account even though we are no longer attending classes. This is straight up fraud and my bank will be handling it from there. They are not empathetic just looking to get paid. We attended 3 classes in 2 months and I will be charged for another 2 months. The classes were too big and there wasn't enough time being given to each student. If you're looking for your littles to learn the basics of jiu jitsu this is not the place. read more

Gracie Barra - Gracie Barra Northridge is the best place to train in California! - Muay Thai Near Me - Northridge, California

Although I've had a love for watching Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ) for many years, I was always hesitant to pull the trigger and try it out because of the people I envisioned I would encounter at a BJJ school. When I finally made the decision to start training, Gracie Barra Northridge (GBN) shattered all my misconceptions of training. Not only was Romulo Barral, head professor at the school and International Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Federation (IBJJF) Hall of Famer, incredibly welcoming and approachable, all the other world class professors and coaches at the school carried that same welcoming and supportive attitude. Don't get me wrong. Starting to train BJJ is tough, especially with the competitors at GBN. It can be discouraging getting tapped over and over again, but the support you will receive from BJJ fundamentals coach and rising star in the BJJ scene, Sky Lovell, will make you come back for more and drive you to improve. Over time I found myself getting in better shape, all while doing something that I found fun and challenging. I've also grown to see the training partners in my classes, as well as the staff at GBN, as part of my extended family. GBN also has international acclaim from the BJJ community because of five time world champion, Romulo Barral. After learning that professional BJJ athletes actually moved from their home country to train with Romulo, I felt very lucky that I only have to drive 10 min to get to the school. So if you're on the fence on making the decision to start BJJ training, don't wait for years like I did. Start training at Gracie Barra Northridge and I promise you that you won't regret it. read more

I can't say enough about Gracie Barra in Northridge. The atmosphere is very family-oriented and friendly, and this comes from the owners and management who set the tone. Yet even as the youngest kids feel free enough to play with their friends, there is a serious competitiveness at the higher levels that lets the kids know that there is serious discipline involved in jiu jitsu. The coaches are great-- strict without being mean, and they also know how to let the younger kids have a little fun now and then. In this nurturing environment, our son David quickly learned to love the sport, and has made a lot of friends that he looks forward to meeting as many evenings and Saturdays as we can bring him. And, it gives him a good workout, and much-needed physical contact with other kids his age. read more
