The appetizers are always hot and fresh and the beer cold. The dinner menu is amazing. We love their steaks and specials too. We live in Bako, but have a cabin in Alta Sierra. So we love diving the slower way up so we can have an excuse to stop and eat.

We had to flag her down for everything from ordering, to getting silverware, to actually checking out. She never once checked in with us to see how our food was or offer us refills on drinks. We also ordered a well drink from the bar and she automatically upcharged us without asking. As a former bartender I am all for upselling, but don't charge a customer for greygoose when they ordered a well vodka. Once we were finished eating we sat there for a good 15 minutes as she was outside on the patio smoking and chatting with her friends. When she did check us out she seemed bothered by us even being there and never once said thank you. The food itself was ok, we had two of their sandwiches with onion rings and fries. Overall though, I can't recommend this spot, which is sad because I love supporting local businesses. Hopefully this was just an off day for them.

The day we went was surprisingly busy because of course it was their 20th anniversary celebrations and we had no idea! Even with it being incredibly busy things came out quickly! I got to try a peach slushy margarita thingy (I forget the cute name) and that was delicious and refreshing! All the food was delicious and well made! My husband really enjoyed the burger and commented how much he liked the meat mix. The server was a delight, and all around it was a good choice to stop by! A very good cut of meat and I would only assume from local sources because we were in cattle ranch country. Great seasoning on the steak with perfect marbling. The sides that came with our entrees were all perfectly paired with the proteins, whipped buttery mashed potatoes, good sized baked potato with the fixings. It was a delicious dining experience for us all, Gretchen checked on us numerous times with her pretty smile and happy demeanor. The menu is very reasonably priced making it very affordable in these unaffordable times. Great food located in a remote area, with friendly staff and cold libations the Cowpuncher's is like an oasis to anyone passing through or working hard in the Central Valley heat. The sandwich could have been better in my opinion if a shredded ice burger lettuce would have been used for the crunch factor since the bread was so soft and by using a thick cut of bacon for that sandwich. I paid $35 for the burger and I'd gladly pay it again. If I remember correctly it was a 1/3 lb pattie cooked to medium. Oh my God... I have been in love and thinking about this burger for a whole week. The most incredible experience aside from the unmatched burger, was the experience and customer service. Everyone was so cool, fun, and just so incredible. The owner walked around each table to introduce himself and you could clearly see his pride and love for the restaurant. Watermelon Sugar High:4/5-refreshing with watermelon juice freshly made in house and an ice cube with mint frozen in it. Seared cauliflower: 4/5-great appetizer for 2. The crispy chicken sandwich and the Botanist smash burger:5/5-Both had super flavorful pickles and toasted buns which always add a lovely crunch to each bite. If you're ever in Bakersfield and are at least 21, this place is well worth it! We'll hopefully be back someday. Highly recommend!
