- [ ] This isn't a foodland, it's a sack n save which I assume is owned by foodland. Being a tourist I have been hearing about the poke served at foodland and wanted to try it. We typed into maps "Foodland" and directions brought us to this place. They did have poke. Several different kinds, mostly tuna. The guy working the counter was nice and offered samples for tasting. I got a regular side of the spicy ahi tuna. The poke was very good, my first in the big island but I've had better on my trip. The fish was fresh and tender but wasn't as soft like butter as others I've had. The rice lacked a bit of flavor. But for the price of $7.99, $10 cheaper than all over meals I've had your really can't beat that. We also got 3 apple bananas and 1 papaya which cost us an additional $10. read more

Went to the down town sack n save and honestly was a little bummed. The sushi didn't look the freshest and the options were limited. It could have been because we went later in the day but still I felt the quality was a little low. Anyhow, we ended up getting two rolls of sushi that looked pretty good. The cashier was also very nice and even gave us extra napkins. I'd recommend going to the Puainako Sack n save if you want more options for sushi. read more

Local grocery in downtown Hilo that closes late. It's a good thing too because most grocery stores here closes early. As all known, this is operated by Foodland. Location wise is good but it's a melt pot for homeless people. Yes they don't bother you but it's a bit bothersome for their other patrons. Parking here is a bit narrow but since we came here evening it's a less hassle dealing with other cars. Store is pretty clean when we came here. Fresh produce but not a lot of selection. Staffs are just okay. It's late in the evening and I must understand that they are too tired at that day. It's bigger than a convenient store so of course this store carry most of the things you need & want. Recommended if you want to grab some frozen foods & goodies Which 24/7 Longs Drugs don't have. the fried chicken tenderloins at the deli hot food counter is really good. I was hungry before going to the store, which is never a good idea... So, I found myself migrating away from the original plan and looking at the fried chicken thighs that I hadn't bought for years (it was a go to meal for beach and other fun picnic kind of activities.) I have been watching my diet a little more now that I'm aging in years...so to see the tenderloin option in buttermilk fried chicken recipe...I was so stoked! It was good. It had some seasoning in it that I liked and though it could have been crispier, I really enjoyed it! you should try. read more

Haven't met a Sack n Save I didn't like! Our go to grabs from every Sack n Save we entered was a bowl of poke, fresh fruit, and snacks. We thought the stores and employees were fine and didn't have any bad experiences when we ventured to them. Wish we had these on the mainland. read more

Last 10 piece fried chicken for $18.99 was JUNK!!! They were either too old just sitting too long in their warmer or overcooked tasted weird like it was old. Definitely off tasting that's for sure maybe even freezer burn too? I couldn't enjoy the extremely HARD AND DRY fried chicken experience and even struggled to peel off their skins to eat first (unbelievable, my first time not enjoying fried chicken skins too NO WAIT THEIR KOREAN FRIED CHICKEN I HAD BEFORE WAS WORSE) and so I even boiled them to make chicken soup but the meat was still hard and chewy!!! This experience was terrible and unacceptable!!! Even SAFEWAY fried chicken was better than this on one of their BAD "OFF" DAYS!!! read more

PARKING LOT SUCKS. Customer service is okay, just depends on who is working. Wouldn't recommend taking anyone who just came back from basic training (wearing uniform) in with you if you're buying yourself some beer/hards because they'll deny you EVEN if you're carrying it, you're the one paying for it and you are honest and tell them that they are underage when asked. They still ask for ID and if you can't show proof you're underage then the person of age still can't buy it for themselves? No problem! We can give our money to someone else read more

Usually love this store cause it's close to my house. Shop here almost everyday. Today there was 2 of worst floor walkers flowing me and my boyfriend around store. Felt very targeted, I never stole anything in my life. These are employees that have worked for Sack N Save for awhile I've seen them in uniform. I wanted to go here because I was looking for some poke to have for lunch. The poke was tasty and there is a large selection. Since I'm a tourist, it was fun to browse the aisles and look at all the things that I can't find on the mainland - like the poke and the wide variety of fruits and vegetables. It's a good store run by local people. A bit of a run-down appearance and vibe - but a real store patronized by real people. If I lived in Hilo, I might shop here - but more likely the KTA because KTA seems more organized. read more

Local grocery store operated by Foodland. Has very good poke. Had the ahi shoyu, Korean flavor, and California roll poke. Also recommend trying the shrimp tempura musubi. read more

I feel like such a contrarian writing a negative review. I bought one item and was in the store about five minutes but their policy, disclosed before I chose to buy, just struck me as opportunistic profiteering. I was visiting hilo and I forgot my cell phone charger. Sack and Save had a charger for $6 ah ha! I was in luck. All I needed to do was make sure it would fit my extremely common USB micro slot. The Sack and Save clerk informed me that I could look at the plugs through the plastic but I could not open the reclosable plastic to fit them and if I paid for it all sales were final. I saw three plugs including Iphone and USB...so I paid and gleefully opened the package. Guess what...it was USB mini...::::whaaa, whaaa, wonk, whaaa. Sack and Save made a quick six bucks. Because i had no use for a charger that did not fit, I put it back together and left it on the counter. I would understand the policy if the plastic was not reclosable or if it was once it leaves the store all sales were final, since I am sure people would "borrow" use and return. To not allow fitting for an item that lacks a very common connection seemed kind of opportunistic. But hey at least the price was right, Hilo Airport wanted $27 for a charger (which I did not pay). read more

Cheapest milk I have seen in Hawaii- $.3.25 for a half gallon of nonfat milk. Nice workers, clean store, late hours, plenty of parking, a discount card, and 2 Red Boxes. Their produce looks pretty good, but I stick to just getting crap at the farmer's market but for more traditional fruits (apples, strawberries, etc) I wouldn't hesitate to buy here. read more

Love the store because locally owned and operated. Another reason is reasonable prices. A thing to improve is the employees they need to understand true customer service is enthusiasm to serve the customers. A manager needs to truly empower their employees and encourage them to success even if it is higher than you. I know it can be done if truly implemented sales be growing and employees be getting raises. I believe that can be done. read more

I live close to this market and find that it usually has everything i need. It's clean and small - which I like as I don't like having to walk all over looking for things. Decent grocery store with decent prices. If you're looking for more exotic items, you should try Safeway or KTA. Sack n save downtown has a good size partially covered parking area, and the related aloha gas station on property is convenient. Deli is average, alcohol selection is good. read more

Not a lot of variety compared to other grocery stores BUT definitely a lot more different brands than the other sack n save @ Puainako. Love how thy have Poke Bowls for $6.99 (one choice) and a 2 choice for $9.99. It's super cold which is good. Aisles could be widen more. It's clean. It's kinda cramped, but not so much so that you feel squished in the aisles. Cashiers are slow, but helpful nonetheless. Easy to get here by walking if you are staying downtown, plus they are open later than most other places if you have a Hi-Chew craving...or a regular healthy food craving. I would steer clear of their fruits and veggies. The Hilo Farmer's Market is MUCH cheaper and has better quality. read more
