I saw Dr Stephen Huish several years ago, and a negative Yelp review under my name appeared. I…read moreguess it provides a reason to think carefully about a review, because I do not recall writing it, nor does it represent accurately my experience at Dr. Huish's office several years ago and several weeks ago, when I was referred to him again. His office was comfortable, although he was punctual, leaving me only a few minutes to relax in it. His check staff were very professional but still friendly and efficient. Once I was in an exam room, again, only a few minutes before Dr Huish came in. He (despite telling me about a bad yelp review which both surprised and embarrassed me) was completely dedicated to understanding my physical circumstances, recent medical history, and his physical examination was thorough and expert (that judgment's coming from me as an MD, not as a patient). I would recommend Dr Huish as a thoughtful, knowledgeable and meticulous caregiver whose professionalism and concern for his patients welfare is reflected in the attitudes of every staff member I met. He has cared for me twice. Needing an orthopedist/rehab center's help may not be your favorite reason to see a doctor, but Dr. Huish and his office combine to make this a comfortable a patient experience, and as optimal a successful treatment outcome as you can get. (and after I posted this I see it says I have done 2 reviews; I cannot find myself a second review from me on this doctor and his office but since he alerted me to this I have changed passwords and some posting practices. I would not want to leave this office (or any other) to be open to inappropriately negative review, and I will be checking this to make sure nothing I've written is modified

I came here to see Dr. Derrick Sims for my annual physical. He was thorough, but was more critical…read moreand judgmental than necessary. While he seemed knowledgeable, his bedside manner was lacking. There was no compassion there. I didn't feel comfortable discussing another important personal health matter with him because of his demeanor. At the end of the day, I had my physical done and that's what matters but it wasn't the most positive experience. Fast forward to two months later. I made an appointment for 9AM for my follow up. I arrive at 8:55. When I arrive there is one other patient sitting and waiting to be seen. As I sit down, she is called in for Dr. Sims. I wait... wait and wait.... 45 minutes later I ask the nurse if my appointment was for 9 or 9:30. She told me it was 9:00 but there was another doctor there and there were no rooms available for me to be seen. That sounded like a crock of shit to me because the entire 45 minutes I was there, no patients came in or out. At 45 minutes, I walked out. And I felt good doing so. I didn't like him anyway and I don't wait 45 minutes for anyone. My time is just as valuable and as precious as his and if this is how patients are treated, I don't need to go there. I am currently having my records forwarded to another doctor. Additionally I met with Dr. Imbornone (sp?) on one occasion for an upper respiratory infection. Again, a very competent doctor but no bedside manner whatsoever. Very dry, no compassion, very clinical. My infection went away with the meds he gave me but there was no connection there. He didn't even shake my hand. Again, I guess this is how the doctors are there and for some people, that works. For me, I like a little more.

Don't get me wrong. He IS a doctor, so he DOES sometimes go into clinical mode, but....if you ask him to break it down into layman's terms, he will. He IS a doctor, and he is going to tell you not to do all of the fun stuff that you wanna do (What? I can't eat cheeseburgers everyday?) But, if you ask him to deal in reality, he will certainly do so. Sorry that you didn't have a good experience, Jen. I have taken off a star solely for the front desk. Sometimes getting someone to answer the phone is like pulling teeth. Edited to add the following: I remember one time I went in to see Dr. Sims and I was feeling particularly miserable. I must have looked incredibly miserable because he actually gave me a hug. The hug wasn't inappropriate or creepy, it was actually very kind. Kudos, Dr. Sims!

This seems as appropriate a venue as any to sing the praises of Dr. Robert K. Gale, GP…read moreextraordinaire. I think most of us have become so completely given over to the mediocrity that is managed care these days. Even the more highly-recommended doctors from whom I've sought care strike that perfect balance between phoning it in and covering their asses. While those are two disparate-sounding descriptors, it's an accurate way to characterize the position of the patient--and when we don't know what we're missing, we're apt to simply accept it and/or never question it. I don't hold any doctor completely to blame--this is how the insurance industry would have it; but doctors could do more to circumvent the impression. Enter Dr. Gale. My husband tried to convince me for four years to try Dr. Gale after hearing me complain about my NYU-based GP. He'd regale me with tales of being referred to Dr. Gale's excellent derm, or the physical therapist, or some other specialist--all within the same practice. Tired of having to repeat your story over and over again as you move from your GP to a specialist? Try a practice that can keep you within it across a number of therapeutic areas. I thought that, as a woman, I wouldn't appreciate having a male GP; now it doesn't phase me in the least. As practices go, Dr. Gale's is run like a fine-tuned engine. Diana is his gatekeeper, and she'll do her level best to find you an appointment, 99% of the time, the same week--particularly if you're in need. Follow-up appointment slip your mind? You'll get a card and a call from Diana. Need an appointment before work? How early would you like it? Blood test results? You'll get a call from the doctor or a nurse without having to ask for it. To Dr. Gale himself: I've known no other doctor with the tableside manner that he possesses. This is a man who will go the extra mile to make you feel both comfortable and informed. And from what I've observed in his care of other patients, I know him to be infinitely compassionate. Another refreshing thing about Dr. Gale is his sense of the how to address how our lives really are, and what we're capable of taking on. I feel completely free to tell him what I can and cannot do; his ability to advise based on that makes him so beyond an "authority in a white coat". Reviewing a doctor is not like rating a restaurant, or singing the praises of your favorite shoe repair. Most doctors I've known didn't merit my time or this level of praise (and in some cases, quite the opposite). I would want Dr. Gale managing my care, no matter what came my way. In my book, that's high praise indeed.

I signed up for an annual physical, during which I had my blood drawn. I received quite a shock when I received the bill. In addition to charges for the physical and blood draw, I received charges for a second office visit, an after hours visit, and a mental health assessment, none of which I consented to. I called the billing office and asked for an explanation. They said the after hours charge was because my visit was at 5 p.m. The mental health assessment because I filled out a paper mental health form (which was never discussed with me). And the second office visit because I asked the doctor a few questions about my health. I explained that I had never consented to these extra services. They removed the after hours charge "as a courtesy" (like they're doing me a favor or something), but said the other charges stood and that my consent was not necessary. It took three and a half months and six phone calls, but finally the billing office agreed to the drop the charge for the second office visit, again "as a courtesy." One false charge remains, but I'm not contesting it because insurance covered the full cost. In any case, I certainly won't return to this medical office, and I urge everyone else to avoid it as well.
