Loncheria Fabiola - Taco time!

We wanted to find some authentic Mexican street style food and not spend a lot of money doing it…read more We were able to make all of those things happen at Loncheria Fabiola in Pisté. We loved that we could dine outdoors (and hangout with like 15 stray dogs haha) and this was incredibly close to the Mayan Ruins at Chichen Itza so we were able to grab food here the night before our tour of the ruins. Started off with some pork tacos and some assorted empanadas. The empanadas were good but I would say out of the three things I tried they were my least favorite. The flavor was solid and the fillings and consistency were enjoyable but they lacked the pop of the other two dishes for me personally. I added some of the hot salsas they brought to the table and that made these even better but the tacos and my entree definitely held the edge. These tacos were served on a thicker tortilla than the tortillas they brought for our entrees. I really enjoyed the texture and mouth feel of this compared to a typical corn tortilla. It had more flavor as well to me. The pork had great flavor and was very tender, and the toppings as well as both hot salsa's on this was really great together. I'd eat these tacos all day long. For my entree I decided to get the "Chochinita Pibil" platter. This is this regions famous go to dish so it made perfect sense to try it out. It's a pork that is slow roasted with interesting seasonings like cinnamon, achiote, and allspice. The flavor on this was not similar to things I've had before and I enjoyed it so much. The pork was super tender and there was a bit of a smoky flavor as well. I made some tacos with it and added some of the rice and mole and it was seriously an awesome bite. Would order this again 10 out of 10 times here. 3 entrees with tacos, empanadas, and sodas was like $30 usd or something. Insane. Loncheria Fabiola - Didn't Suck!

I was trying to talk to my husband about things while a sales associate was right on our tail to suggest more things for us to buy that we had no interest in. The food buffet when we came back was okay. There were limited options and only one dish stood out as being tasty was the shredded pork. They had two different groups of dancers who danced for maybe two minutes and then went around asking for tips. Then the server came back around telling everyone that the dancer tips and server tips are separate. The "servers" were not present at all except when they sat us and asked if we wanted drinks and dropped them off.

It's a rather large space with many different souvenirs, at a somewhat decent rate. I wound up buying an overpriced pack of six Mexican Tequilas to give to some of my colleagues and some candy for my daughter. The staff here wasn't overbearing but they stand close by and swoop in to give you a ticket with their name-- I guess to receive credit for the sale, although they provided absolutely no assistance. When we came for lunch, the lines were a little confusing because people were just standing all over the place. Finally, when we did get our food, I only wanted rice and black beans, both of which were good. We also were provided a glass of Horchata, I've never had it before but decided to drink it-- I was very impressed and actually liked it.

The waiter greeted us right away and told us the three option on the menu. We had the carnitas and they were soooo good. I can't remember the other two, but one was with eggs. The sign is a bit off to the side and not really facing the street, so we missed it the first time around. Pulling in, you can see the grills going in front and in the back of the seating area. Plastic chairs and tables under shaded canopies were readily available. There is no menu, essentially whatever meat is being grilled is what you get - that and along with warm homemade tortillas, pico de gallo, limes, beans, and salsas. So I was lucky they were grilling pork that day. The pork was pretty good and fantastic with their thick homemade tortilla and ridiculously spicy salsas. For $4 USD a person, this was a steal. I did get a bottle of water and not use their cups of ice just to be on the safe side. Glad to say I had no tummy issues after this meal.
