If not for Matthew T., we would have never discovered Sabor Latino. Yep, it is a typical scary Bradenton shopping center next to a Bingoland. There are local rednecks drinking beer in the parking lot at 2:30 in the afternoon. So we knew this was going to be another adventure. As soon as we got out of the car, we would hear joyous Latin music blasting from the speaker on the front of the restaurant. I started to get really excited to see what is inside. We found a seat in the back right next to the open kitchen. There is a very Brooklyn/Queens* vibe about the place because the tap water is served at room temperature and the sodas are served in a can with a straw. Sabor Latino is a Columbian restaurant, but they also serve dishes from Peru, Honduras, Mexico, and Puerto Rico. They have warmed Pandebonos! Which is a soft cheese roll made mostly with cheese mixed with tapioca flour and cornmeal. They are only $1 each so we ate two as an appetizer and ordered four more to take home for later. I have had the Brazilian version of this bread, and was so happy to see that there is also a Colombian version. And the front of the menu showed their Colombian specialty the Bandeja Paisa (which means Platter from the Paisa region). If you google this dish, it is typical of the information you would find online. The dish is similar to an English Breakfast with beans, eggs, sausages--- but with rice, and various other accompaniments. "Are you sure you want the blood sausage?" the waitress asked. Yep, I wanted to taste the food as served to everyone. The blood sausage was crumbly, but very delicious because it was loaded with spices. The chorizo, on the other hand, had the vibrant flavor of a hot dog. These were served with flat seared steak and fried pork with skin. The pork was sitting in beans, so it became quite wet and rubbery. My husband ordered the best dish so far, which was the Mofongo with Carne Frita. The mofongo was not the highlight of this dish--- but the carne frita was lick-your-plate good. It is fried pork chunks that have been marinated in a sour sauce and seared on the flat top with onions. The flavor is so vibrant that I just kept going in for more. Next time, I want to try one of their many seafood dishes served with a cream base. They also have delicious looking desserts and Arepas with various fillings. Available is also an assortment of bottled beers, many which I have never heard of. *Only slightly-cold or room temperature drinks, we started referring to as "New York Cold, " being sarcastic. The Hipsters would eat Sabor Latino up, they pay top dollar for Arepas. I remember eating an Arepa dinner one night that was around $130 for 3 people.

Bandeja yummyness. And yes the pork was delish

How can this place not be reviewed yet? It seems like I've seen the sign for it for years. While it is in a rundown sort of nearly empty icky strip mall on 41 north of the airport is probably part of the reason this hasn't been reviewed yet. Which is a shame. What is more criminal is the fact I didn't try it sooner. I tried the Bandeja Paise, for two main reasons, fried pork belly with the skin still on and some chorizo. This dish is actually a ton of food and meat heavy as it comes with a bit of steak (thinly sliced), rice and beans, a nicely cooked runny egg and sweet plantains. One meal for the entire day! Every thing was yummy. The salsa had a good kicked and mixed in with anything on the plate added a great dimension. The pork was amazing, the chorizo was ok, I've had better. Really loved the rice and beans and hard to beat a runny egg on rice to counter balance the other yummy bits or a bite of the belly. Didn't need to eat for a day after this. The waitress was supper friendly and just a comfortable friendly, welcoming place. So don't let the scary strip mall run you off, Try this nice hole in the wall. This review is based on one visit but I know I'll be back. Got to go back and try a few other things!

La bandeja paisa estaba super deliciosa y el mofongo con carne frita muy buen sabor. Lo mas q me atrae es que tienen platos de diferentes paises. Recomendado.

My brother who lives there swore by this spot, and the second I walked into Mi Carreta, I knew he wasn't exaggerating. The Bandeja Paisa? Absolute perfection. We're talking perfectly grilled steak, a runny fried egg, sweet plantains, creamy red beans, fluffy white rice, fresh avocado, crispy chicharrón, and grilled chorizo--all on one glorious platter. I attacked it so fast I didn't even snap a photo, but trust me, that plate is burned into my memory forever. As if the food wasn't enough, the TV above the counter was showing the World Cup group draw live. We found out who Colombia is facing right there over lunch--talk about perfect timing! The whole place was buzzing. For the grand finale, we grabbed a few Colombian donuts (buñuelos and pandebonos) to go. Sweet, cheesy, impossible to eat just one. If you're anywhere on Florida's west coast and craving authentic Colombian food, do yourself a favor and head straight to Mi Carreta in St. Pete. You can thank me (and my brother) later!

It was Colombian, so trying some new things. Place was packed, we were lucky. There was one open table, so seated right away. We were brought waters and menus and ordered the Beef Empanadas as an appetitizer. My wife selected the Ajiaco, Chicken and Potato soup. My daughter decided on the Sandwich de Carne, Steak sandwich. After looking for something different, I chose the Frijoles con Garra, Beans with pork skin, Fried Pork Belly, Rice, Fried Plantains and Avacado. Apparently every meal comes with a small salad, which was nice. As we were eating our salads, our Empanadas came. Wow! These were the best Empanadas we had ever eaten. Crispy, hot, well filled, and delicious. Our meals came and they were whoppers. Especially after 3.6 Empanadas with my daughter - my wife only had 1/2. My wife's soup was huge, most of it went home. As did 1/2 of my daughter's sandwich. Couldn't believe it was only $7.45, a great deal and very tasty. My beans and beans were great and I enjoyed the Pork Belly. Again, half went home for another meal. To wrap it up we were brought a small piece of Caramel Flan to try. Food was good, service was great, good ambiance but a bit loud at time. My only disappointment was their hot sauce was not even warm. But altogether a nice meal as introduction to Columbian food. Next time I'll try something else again!
