This is by far my favorite restaurant in chicago for colombian food. the portion sizes are huge, and the food is always cooked perfectly. I love the feeling of stepping into this restaurant and feeling like you're at a restaurant in Colombia. The ambiance on the weekend is great with live music every Saturday. The service is great, although i feel like sometimes if the person is not colombian, some of the waitresses are a bit more quiet and not as lively; but regardless it's still a great experience. read more

We ordered catering from Sabor A Cafe for a large party of 50+ people including steak, chicken, rice, vegetables, three types of empanadas, and a dessert of plantains, cheese, and guava paste. Everything was delicious. Elio was easy to work with and helped coordinate everything and arranged for delivery which arrived on time, nice and hot. You get a lot of food for what you pay and our guests enjoyed everything. It was a good thing we had as much as we did because people kept going back and wanted to take some home. This place was not good at all. Very overpriced for what they serve. The service was the worse. I guess they were not happy because it was 8 of us, totally understanding. My issue was that one of the waiters was checking on every single table except ours. He brought out a plate and gave a snarky look. I asked if he was ok and he said yeah. We overheard him tell the other table that he doesn't like serving big groups of our ethnicity. We asked for him water and he refused to bring it because he wasn't our waiter. He said "I'll tell your waiter to bring you water because this is not my table" .. does it really kill you to bring water to the table? the service is always great here, however the food specifically the steak is never ever consistent. i ordered the ny strip steak yesterday medium rare, it was so well done to the point the meat had turned grey and the cerated knife was not able to slice through. I didn't want to cause a huge issue however it was inedible, upon getting it fixed my steak came back raw, it barely looked like the meat had touched the pan. for the other people i was eating with their steaks were well done as well. this is my second time giving this place a try the first time i went here my friend's and I had steaks that were undercooked and raw and had to be recooked again, its just very embarrassing given this is a steak restaurant. whoever the chef is needs serious retraining if a barely 16oz steak is a challenging for them. read more

I took my wife, one-year-old son, sister-in-law, and father-in-law here, last Mother's Day. I didn't have any reservations, and they weren't excepting any, but was surprised that as soon as we walked in, we were able to get a table. The food was great and you get a very very big plate of food for the amount that you spend, I would recommend skipping breakfast if you go here for lunch or a late dinner. The decorations were really nice and made you feel like you were somewhere else other than in the city. Their service was a little slow, but understandable, with how busy they were, and the only negative experience I had on this place was they didn't keep customers table numbers in order. I found out that they were using table 6 for probably almost everyone in the restaurant so we wound up getting someone else's bill that we had to get corrected two different times. If I was able to rate 4 1/2 stars I would, but it doesn't look like yelp allows me too. I would recommend this place, and I definitely would go again. read more

We used to live nearby so we've been here several times. Love this place! The service can be a bit hit or miss but it was excellent this time. Parking is usually pretty easy, the decor quaint and clean, the food very good and the drinks top notch! If your first time here, try the paradilla it's a little bit of everything...a Colombian meatlover's dream! I really enjoy that they make their chicken super thin, it just makes it much more flavorful. I'm not sure what they do to their rice but it is a nice salty fluffy perfection. What really makes their food even better are the sauces! We always end up ordering extra, and then extra after that! We also love their margaritas! I was there this past weekend for one of their live music event and was impressed with the small/cozy venue! We had a reservation for 8pm and we showed up about 15mins early but since our table was ready they sat us down right away. All of us ordered either the mango mojito or the passion fruit mojito... the passion fruit was by far my favorite and highly addictive!! Right away we asked for separate checks and the waitress (Jenny) did an excellent job tracking down the items we all ordered throughout the night. I had the "parrillada" dish which was great and had a little bit of everything! It has a piece of steak, grilled chicken, a sausage, and two pieces of shrimp with a side of plantain (fried into small pieces like french fries) and some potatoes and yuca. Everyone in the table seemed to enjoy their food and the popular dish was the "Bandeja Paisa" which had a lot going on. The place was crowded and with the live music it was super fun! It was lively and some people were dancing between the tables. We had a few rounds of mojitos and even walked out with a CD of the bands latest album. Have been coming to this spot for many years. With that said, today is the last time coming here. Food was awful. Ordered a shrimp ceviche, first they brought the wrong thing and since the waitress never came back we ate some of it...no flavor. The chicken empanada tasted like the chicken had been made last week. Then we let the waitress know she got the order wrong and she snapped back that is what we ordered. The passion fruit smoothie also had no flavor like it had been watered down until it was tasted like water and not passion fruit. We paid over 100 dollars including tip for our food. This is a great lunch spot if you're in the area. I don't come to Chicago too often since I live in the north suburbs, but whenever I visit my family in the area, I'll make sure to get the carne asada lunch special. Sabor a café is a really nice place to Colombian food and listen to some good music. I went Saturday and the group that was in the stage made the experience great. The food is tasty, the service is wonderful and the drink selection is good. I had a Colombian beer, my companions had wine and cocktails. Went on a late Sunday afternoon and we had the place to ourselves. Decor was fun making us feel like we were on vacation someplace warm. There was so much to admire all around. The stage was a great focal point with several portraits. There was even a couple that had light shining through them and projected to the wall. That was pretty cool. Although, there was no live music at that time, it looks to be a great happening night spot and the boards with all the musicians' signatures may be proof of that. There were some miscommunicatons with deep accents between the servers and my in laws, but overall service was fine. They didn't come and check in on us too often and that was just fine. Grilled Shrimp plate was huge with 6 jumbo shrimp, white rice, 2 large fried plantains, side salad and salsa. Half of the shrimp was burnt, but hubby didn't mind.
