First of all, the restaurant was getting ready to shut down its outdoor lunch trade for the winter and the owner opened just for us: That's what I call service! The seating was literally six inches from the river; little ducks were very attentive to make sure that nothing fell off our plates into the water. The food is regional Piedmontese which is very different from what most people think of when they think "Italian." They offer an antipasti buffet which is outstanding! We were given the standard menu (in italian) and when we looked puzzled, he explained (in outstanding English) that he didn't believe in multi-lingual menus as that put "distance" between the diner and the staff. He patiently explained each of his recommendations and we chose the special Piemonte tasting menu. We were not disappointed! He explained each course of the dinner with the quiet enthusiasm of someone who truly loves his work and sharing it with others. As other have said, "The Egg" (a poached egg and potato souffle in a cheese sauce) was the best start to a meal I have ever had. The homemade egg noodles were amazing as was the pork fillet and desert. He pointed out that his mother also bakes the breads from her own recipes. I now have a place to recommend to my Italian colleagues in return for the many recommendations they have given me. I look forward to returning again to this outstanding establishment. Chef Batavia demonstrated his passion for his craft throughout and, he was correct, he connected with us throughout the evening in no small part because we DIDN'T have menus in English.
