It serves elevated Indian cuisine that is beautifully made and creatively presented. This isn't your standard Indian take-out. The dining room is casual but stylish, the cocktails were terrific and the food top notch. Service was very welcoming and efficient. For starters, we had the Aloo tikka chat (5*), the Bombay chat (5*) and the creamery (4*) plus poppadoms with the trio of dips. For mains our table had: Chicken Nawabi - easily the best dish I have ever tasted. The chicken bhuna in this dish is NEXT level. 5 stars does not do this plate justice! 5* Tiffin sea bass - their signature dish and also delicious! 5* Nadal khozi curry - fragrant, deep flavours. Probably one of the best curries I've ever had but it had tough contenders in the other plates! 4* Raman Akhbari - the lamb leg with mash. Amazing. 5* For dessert we had chocomosa anand and the grilled pineapple dish. Do not think you can share played as the portions are small. The little choc filled pastry delights were melt-in-the-mouth crispy parcels filled with warm melted chocolate, on a bed of caramelised banana. These guys are outstanding. Do not let the exterior and street fool you. This is memorable.

I decided I'd ultimately get the vegan thali (£13.90) so I could try a bunch of dishes. The thali came out in about 10-15 minutes, and let me say that this was a very high-quality thali -- none of the dishes seemed lazily thrown together, or like cheap versions of a better dish; I apparently got their A game. The main dishes included a delicious daal, a spicy veggie curry, a very spicy chole (chickpea curry), and a spicy potato curry. This was served with white basmati rice, bread, and pappadams. Huge amount of food and all delicious. Very comfortable environment, good service, and a super central location. This was a great find.

Not far from Cardiff Bay, this restaurant's pretty well-situated for a light bite to eat. On their Pre-Theatre deal, I got onion bhajis, lamb korma and egg fried rice for £9.95. The food was alright: the lamb was on the tough side for me and the korma was a bit too heavy on the coconut. That being said, the service was good and the food was well-presented. I wouldn't rush back, but it's worth trying out.

It was probably way I went. Looking for surly spices going around burning people and collecting ASBO's sounded like a good night out if I'm being honest. Much to my dismay it was far more civilised than that and found it to be a Thai restaurant too. I like Thai as I'm newish to it and am still finding myself ordering whatever looks good rather than going for a usual dish I like. Beef with hot thai bean sauce was my weapon of choice and I wasn't disappointed. There was a small Spicy riot in my mouth, but nothing I couldn't handle and found it very tasty indeed. The staff were polite and served as well, nothing out of the blue though. It did take a little longer than I would of liked but that may of been due to the large number of bodies that were taking up my air and my time, so it was understandable.

The interior is modern and very well furnished. Not a typical, authentic setting for this kind of cuisine, it's still pleasant enough and certainly kept clean and in good condition. The staff here are friendly enough, although given the nature of buffet dining, there's pretty much very little they have to do. Staff are keen to offer refills on drinks, but this isn't entirely innocent. With the quite cheap prices on buffet food, the drinks are a little bit more expensive and carry a bit of a premium. The food is pretty average. That's an honest opinion. Really don't think it's anything to write home about, and i'd hardly call it authentic and flavoursome. The poor quality of the food is detrimental to the whole experience quite significantly. After all, you do go out to eat the food, not take in the surroundings.

I've been to the Spice Merchant about five times 4 of those were to sit down in the restaurant, once was for a takeaway. What they did was deliberately fleece me by charging me an extra £8 service charge rather than giving me the discount of £8 so they deliberately over charged me. The refund I was asking for on a £40 meal was only £12.10. I would not go to this place at all, they can't cook food it's awful that's why I requested a partial refund in the first place. The wait times are insane, waiter service is abysmal. Their staff are very unprofessional, that member of staff who was about to attack me was very shocked when I defended myself and I dare to think what he would have done to me if I had not any self-defence training, he was much larger than me and very athletic build dare I say more... To put this into context I am 5"5 and built like a twig you could put your thumb and index finger around my wrist and make them touch with ease... So while my review maybe slightly tinted by drink fueled exuberance I still believe it to be fairly accurate. We entered the restaurant to be welcomed by a smiling waiter who seemed more than happy to accommodate our loud party of 8. It was one of those evenings that hadn't been planned and we were looking for the nearest Indian restaurant to the water hole we'd been refreshing ourselves at and Janata Palace was that restaurant. So we didn't expect much as none of us had heard of it nor had it been recommended to us. Anyhow I had Chicken Boona which was one of the best I can ever remember tasting.
