So, I was confused when I first visited United Kitchen - is it a commercial kitchen or is it a…read morestore? Well, it's both! The vendors use the kitchen to produce their artisan goods which you can also purchase at the store towards the front of the kitchen. I had some pesto this past weekend from UK and it was out of this world. My husband is still talking about it! Can't wait to try the beet pesto, yes beet pesto! Everything I've tried (best chocolate sauce, zucchini bread, home-made soup, toffee, pesto) has been perfection. Just Delicioso! They also work with the Lyons school students who make fresh coffee every morning. Stop by, you won't be disappointed. I also recently started to use the commercial kitchen to bake vegan cupcakes for a large supermarket and I have to say, these guys know how to run a commercial kitchen. They work with you, are flexible, and are very responsive to emails/calls. The space is very clean and well-stocked. The other users are friendly and don't give you "the look" when you're running a few minutes late. This is such a refreshing change from my last kitchen which reminded me a little of a dungeon, sorry. Love this concept, well done UK! You are good people!

So, I stopped by last Saturday and they are now closed on Saturdays. Only open M-F. What?? So, I made a point to get there today on a Friday afternoon. Was all set to buy multiple loaves for gifts when I was told the baker has gone "gluten free". Oh, no! The loaves are now more expensive and flat as a pancake & don't taste the same! Too bad they jumped on the GF bandwagon; by the time this latest fad fades they will be out of business :( Won't be back...

Upon entering, they have coolers in both sides of the door , with meals to go , or sides and dessert. Pickup on Wed dinners are between 4-6 pm. Everything is fresh, service is great. They will do curbside, or delivery for a small fee. What I like is, I appreciate the thought by the chefs that are put into each meal they create. Everything is paired excellently with forethought, and care. The meals usually have a slight twist or flair to it. If you do a pickup of a Wed nite meal, things will have to be re-heated. But it usually for less than 30 min at a moderate temp. I don't know anything about the catering side but, am reasonably sure, it is fabulous! Excellent food , friendly ladies. Whats not to like? Try it , you'll like it! I feel compelled to add to my review. Yesterday's supper was fantastic! Nice starter salad with toasted walnuts, and a great lemon vinaigrette. Soup was : Tomato , roasted fennel . This soup had a lot of depth to it. Excellent! Main was: Chicken Caprese on a french roll, ( I purposely cooked it longer in the oven to toast my roll). Great sandwich, lots of cheese. Kicker was the homemade pesto sauce. Yummo! Dessert: salted pecan choc chip cookies. Lot of love put into this. Again, what I like. Is, they are out of the ordinary choices, which makes them fun. Thank you Hive.

I was advised that the dough and sauce is homemade and once they sell out, that is it so we have to order early. Being from NY, I have very high standards when it comes to pizza. To be fair, I've had Chicago deep dish, which I think is delicious. We had a medium thin crust pie with pepperoni. It was just okay in my opinion. The dough did taste homemade and not processed, so I will give them that. I just felt something was missing. It needed some oomph. Also I learned that "thin crust" comes in a bag and regular crust and deep dish comes in a box. That's interesting. It was cheaper compared to NY prices. It came to just under $19. Staff was friendly when we picked it up. I was also surprised to see young kids/teens hard at work. High five to them!

It is a state of the art facility with everything you can just about think of, and that's just for the students. They also have an incubator kitchen that you can arrange to use for anywhere between 7-12 dollars an hour, just in case you were thinking about starting your own catering company. The staff is very well trained and proffesional. I was comparing the resumes of the Washburne staff as opposed to the kendall college staff and was actually pleased to find out the Washburne staff has either more experience in high quality fine dining establishments, and/or higher education than a majority of the staff at kendall. http://kennedyking.ccc.edu/washburne/staff.asp The education recieved there is more hands on than most culinary schools in the nation, and that is without boosting the tuition to rediculous amounts. In total for the associates in culinary arts is around 14,000. Which is also one of the best in the nation for culinary arts. Also students are taught from the same text as the Culinary Institute of America which is considered the best culinary school in the nation. The provost for washburne was an Associate Vice-President at the CIA. Washburne provides a very quality education without making you go broke.

The school has moved to the South Shore Cultural Center, a gorgeous building restored to its close-to-original grandeur. The cuinary school has opened up a restaurant to showcase the students' cooking: The Parrot Cage Restaurant. Although I have not been to the restaurant, I attended their 9th annual showcase, which was as impressive as the cooking was good. The students really did it up, serving up Japanese-influenced favorites from Black Cod with Miso Sauce to a very tender teriyaki chicken. In the future, I hope to support Washburne with my own donation in the future. To learn more: http://kennedyking.ccc.edu/washburne/parrot_cage/home.html
