I started going to the Ray 5 months ago on the recommendation of a colleague and I have not been disappointed. The staff at the front desk are very friendly - and with your membership you get a free locker and towel. The locker rooms are in good condition and the showers are well kept and gives you plenty of room. The pool is really nice - and there are quite a few classes you can join. I use their personal training services with Kizzie Mailander and she has truly changed my life! She's a great trainer, but she is funny, direct and pushes you in the most positive way. I couldn't recommend her enough. The most important thing about the Ray is that they have a great selection of equipment and the place is kept in great shape. My membership may cost more than some of the chain gyms - but I feel it's a great value for the money. Highly recommended!

If you have more time and and you're into Chicago baseball, this place will put you right in the area of all the action. Our visit was strictly soccer though, and while the team did not disappoint, the field that they played on had a bit of a grade on the east side goal and my daughter said that there was a buried underwire that that tripped people up every so often when they were near the goal box. The turf was super hairy, make sure that you plan on brushing yourself off after the game. We didn't visit the restaurant that's attached to this facility, but it seemed like a restaurant that had a lot of different options for all kind of game and beer drinkers. The Chicago Fire sponsors this field and so you can get all type of Chicago fire attire. That's your jam. It's great to see pro sports sponsoring these type of fields so that kids have opportunity for League games in their city community. There are indoor bathrooms on site which is a pro when it comes to an outdoor soccer game.

The fields are always in great shape -- the turf is well maintained, the lines are clear, and the layout makes it easy to watch multiple games without feeling crowded. Even during busy league nights, everything feels organized and professional. One thing I really appreciate is the parking. There's plenty of it, which makes showing up for games stress-free. No scrambling for a spot or walking far with your bag after a long match. The food is another underrated part of the experience. For a sports complex, the menu is actually solid. It's a great spot to grab something after a game and hang out with teammates. The overall atmosphere feels welcoming and community-focused, which is probably why I've kept coming back year after year. If you're looking for quality fields, easy parking, and a good post-game vibe, this place delivers.

This place deserves a whole hearted 5-stars, but because the aquatics management at UIC is not fit…read moreto their jobs much of the time I demote to a 4-star rating. This is the story... I swam at a Division 1 level for 4-years of college and upon graduating I needed to find a place to try to remain active. Swimming alone is the most mind numbing and painfully boring activity in the world... so I knew that I would need a team and a coach to keep me motivated and having fun. I was 100% correct in this statement. I first joined Chicago Blue Dolphins (read my review of them elsewhere) and liked it... then it got old, and terrible, and mismanaged, and over priced, and and and... I will let you read the rest on my review of them. So when it came time to switch, a number of my friends and I made our way to Chicago Masters. I heard they were coached by the UIC coach (Paul Moniak) and they had a great team- that had a passion for swimming. Paul has an old-school methodology to his training habits that prove successful for his collegiate and masters swimmers alike time and time again. He is a great coach and is always willing to help with your stroke and swimming fitness needs. There are PLENTY of workout options, and the team trains long course much of the year- which is AWESOME. There is a large variance of skill levels from pre collegiates going for masters world records to 1-step away from aqua joggers. Ages range from lower 20's to infinity... so you will find someone in your skill and age range. The team is just as social as serious having breakfast outings after morning workouts occasionally, picnics on the beach, and other fun activities... Why you would not like it and I demote it to 4-stars. (1) WAY TOO MANY people wear equipment for the duration of a workout. Sure I wear paddles now and again, but fins the whole workout is so beyond appropriate swimming etiquette that it blows my mind. (2) You want a LOT of fine tuning to your stroke. This is a swimming team- we do mostly training. There is some drill work involved, but there is not going to be someone holding your hand through learning how to breath or finish your first triathlon swim. YES- there are options for private lessons (and I encourage those, because I love the though of anyone getting into my sport) but workouts are more training focused than skills. (3) The worst of all... the pool maintenance is poor. Its always clean enough, and the lane lines are in- the stuff you need to swim. But the water temperature is sometimes so impossibly hot that normal swimming is not possible. It seems that the staff that regulates it doesn't understand what good competition and training temps are. So in all- look past a few flaws that keep this from the perfect aquatic experience, but I can confidently say you wont find a better training program in the city. We have multiple masters world record holders, consistently send people to state and nationals... and Paul is easily one of the most underrated coaches around.

I've seen countless friendships forged and have even attended a few Smelts weddings--including a couple who met on the team. I've also seen people across ages, swimming abilities, socioeconomic backgrounds, geographic, ethnic and religious backgrounds come together to swim and cheer each other on. We have hardcore competitive athletes and causal fitness swimmer who come to practices when they can. They've all been welcomed and, generally, treated with respect. We have a big team, but it doesn't feel that way. The camaraderie exists at the lane level and the team level. You can be as involved as you want--whether simply attending practices from time to time or helping plan the annual pride parade decorations. The only expectation is that you be nice and swim. I mean, you need to know how to swim and follow lane etiquette, but let's start with you joining us for a practice. Pop by and decide for yourself if you want to join. Hope to see you there!

First off if you…read moreneed to mention the word insecure 4 times in a review it makes me question how insecure they may be themselves. I am an aquatic professional and not only have I been a part of a few masters swim teams I have also been in charge of a few. The biggest thing about the chicago smelts is how unique they are. Here are few interesting facts about the Smelts: 1. Most masters teams are a program within a club, gym, YMCA, etc. Smelts is it's own entity 2. It is a non profit organization. It is not about making money and if any money is left over we always give back to the community. New lane lines to an out door pool we frequent, money to help with the swim team at Gill park, donation made to other local charities. We even do fundraising at events to help raise extra money for this reason. 3. It is run by volunteers. Everyone who coaches puts their time and energy in for the team. it is run by a board of members and not one single coach is paid. This means they do it because they love it. It's not just another job for them. 4. It's a family. Lots of teams I've seen it's people paying for a service. You go in, get your coached workout and then leave. That's it. Do not expect that from this team. There are some pretty close connections with the members of this team. Best friends formed, marriages, etc. have been created through this team. Some people rely on the friends they have found on this team as if they were family. There are always non sponsored events happening. Once a month a group of people plan a monthly 5K. Do we always get along with everyone, NO. Why should you. There are a ton of people on this team and if everyone got along with everyone then I think we would have found world peace by now. Gill park is a park district pool we utilize but it is not ours. We have no control of how the locker rooms, showers, pool area is run. That is all up to the Chicago Park District. We do our best to try and help out. Remember the raising money I talked about earlier well that's helped pay for some of the improvements made in the facility. We do what we can to help out but in the end it's up to the City of Chicago. I have been on this team for about 6 years and never have I seen a group of committed individuals as this one here. when you talk about goals for state meets many people do not list their times as their goal but how many new people they can meet in the weekend. If you are looking for a team that has no passion, you just want to go in and out without making friends along the way, you want everything to be done for you and want nothing to do with anything that requires the littlest bit of your time and energy outside of the pool then this may not be the place for you. We are about living life, making friends, having fun, and enjoying adventures together.
