The shop is next door to a small market; both are part of a renovated schoolhouse building The donuts are to die for and freshly made when the shop is open. They are also quite rich which means they are a perfect pairing with coffee. I believe the proprietors are Amish, hence no pictures of the extremely helpful and unfailingly polite staff. Seriously--you may hear snippets of "Pennsylvania Dutch" (actually a German dialect). Quirks: the shop is only open Wednesday and Saturday, 6 AM to 2 PM. That's right: two days a week. Period. I strongly suggest getting there early if visiting on a Saturday. Cash only As alluded earlier, it isn't easy to find on your first visit but well worth it.

The size of each donut is well above the norm and the toppings aren't equaled anywhere. Dunkin, Krispy Kream, Sheetz, Twin Run, etc. are not even in the same league, all amateurs compared to Nan's ! The little cafe inside the bakery is efficiently staffed by many young Amish ladies who know their donuts. Being only open 2 days a week makes my mouth water a day early but if they were open more days I'd be so fat on carbs that I would be in big trouble health wise. I can hardly wait for Wednesday and Saturday to arrive to enjoy a cup of excellent coffee and at least one donut in the quaint bakery cafe at Nan's donuts !

What can I say, early bird gets the worm, and I never get the worm. So I pulled up Yelp looking for a comparable egg sandwich and found Dough N Joe. I'd been meaning to try their donuts anyway, but saw they had breakfast sandwiches, so I had to bust out and go. Funny enough, I pass one near work all the time and thought that's where I was headed, but GPS took me to Mechanicsburg. C'est la vie. I like a nice little Sunday drive, so here we are. Got there close to closing, pretty quiet, nobody really in there, donut selection a little picked through. but I grabbed an egg sandwich on bagel with cream cheese, a custard donut, and a cherry cake donut, then bounced. Sat in the car and started eating the sandwich while driving, which is a type of love language. Really good sandwich. Now, it wasn't quite the loaded, gooey, dripping egg sandwich my 1 p.m. soul was seeking, pepperoncinis, tomatoes, lettuce, onion, the whole artistic gooey goodness. It wasn't that. But it was really good. I definitely wouldn't call it standard fare. The ingredients were quality, the chew of the bagel was excellent, and I can still remember biting into that thing. It just wasn't the exact sandwich fantasy I woke up chasing. But the real tour de force. the reason you go to Dough & Joe is the donuts honey. That cherry cake donut? Big, Big, Big Fluffy. Airy. Cakey. Cherry. So good. Seriously, everything about it was so good. And look, I'm on a little health kick right now, so homeboy can't be eating giant cherry cake donuts all the time. I had to stick my neck out a little. when in Rome. Had a guilty conscience about it. Worth it. #cheatmeal Completely worth it. Highly advise you go. Highly advise you get the donuts. I also got a custard one that the fat boy in me wants to demolish, but I may hand it to my roommate because honey... it is not on the meal plan. You understand. Only thing I can knock is I wish I'd gone during peak morning energy. I showed up in my weird late-boy window, and I feel like I missed the full ambiance--the cases packed, espresso machine hissing, people piling in, the Mechanicsburg morning hustle. I bet that version of this place is its own kind of magic. So I'm giving Dough & Joe 4 out of 5 stars. Docking one star only because I didn't get to experience the full New-York-hustle-bustle-in-a-Mechanicsburg-morning fantasy.

So I figured, why not donuts? and so we went to this random place to get a donut or 3. Place is rather unassuming from the front. looking like a renovated bank. From the inside, it's much more upbeat in comparison. The inside has a lot of cartoon rubber ducks, an ordering kiosk, and a cashier stand unmanned. It very much reminds me of a modern fast food location. Instead of ringing people out, you get a giant cell phone that you can order your donut creations and pay. The automated donut machines were busily churning away fresh donuts. The staff were there helping out others, and when it came to do our order one of them got the request and started to prep our snack. The stations were a little on the messy side, and the staff were very much in the mode of getting through with the day. They did do a good job with presentation, but the station was very much trashed. We got our 3 donuts, took some pictures, and dug in. Overall, pretty good. The donuts are not too greasy, more cakey than light. Which makes sense, since there's a lot of toppings you can put on a donut. The donut needs the sugary toppings though, without them they would be quite plain. The Peanut butter was more savory, and the jelly was more a gel than jelly. The bacon was good, and the maple glaze was more sugar than anything. As a donut, they are good but they are basic. You can fancy the donut up in a lot of ways, but the donut itself didn't bring anything to the table. its good, just not great
