I initially saw a provider at NYU Langone Orthopedics but didn't feel comfortable proceeding with him for my wrist surgery. Therefore, I decided to look into other doctors and chose to schedule an appointment with Dr. Steven Yang. I called on 6/23/2025 to book the first available appointment with Dr. Yang, which was set for today, 7/14/2025. When I scheduled the appointment, the staff were fully aware that I had previously seen another provider at the same office. They even mentioned that they could see my follow-up appointment with the first doctor was still active. I explained that I had already canceled it and wasn't sure why it was still showing online. I also made it clear that I did not want them to inform the first doctor that I was booking with Dr. Yang. They assured me, saying, "We don't discuss our patients with other providers, so there's nothing you need to worry about." Today, when I arrived for my appointment, Dr. Yang began reviewing my history and symptoms. However, as soon as he saw the notes from the first provider I had seen, he immediately stated that he could no longer help me and that I needed to continue with the original doctor. Even after I explained why I didn't feel comfortable moving forward with that doctor, he insisted he could not see me and left the room. In the past, when I tried to see a different doctor within the same practice at other institutions (not at NYU), the staff clearly informed me over the phone that their policy does not allow patients to switch to another doctor once they have already been seen by someone in the same group. Why wasn't this clearly communicated to me this time?! I made this appointment three weeks ago and was genuinely looking forward to consulting with Dr. Yang. Instead, I could have used this time to arrange an appointment with a different doctor outside NYU. This experience completely wasted my time and money, especially since I traveled from outside New York City to see him. It feels as though, unless you're a doctor, your time simply doesn't matter. read more

I highly recommend Dr. Yang. I am currently recovering from carpal tunnel surgery. Feeling so much better and it's only been two weeks. I chose Dr. Yang because of his excellent medical credentials and expertise and because he performs carpal tunnel surgery under local anesthesia. Not all surgeons do. It has been 2 years since I've been to Dr. Yang. I was not happy with the way he treated me, both personally and medically. I had an accident where a couple of bones had hairline fractures. He sent me off to OT and put me in a sling and was dismissive even though he knew that my hands were central to my profession. He only did x-rays, not MRI's at the time and couldn't be bothered with questions I had. So now I have additional problems because I was not treated thoroughly or properly and it's too late to remedy them according to other orthopedists I am now seeing. read more

When I sought out a referral for a good orthopedist in the city, Steven Yang was the first name given to me by my doctor. When you go into Dr. Yang's office, you can't help but look at the impressive credentials on his wall. Duke, Harvard, Yale, this gent has quite the lineup of universities under his belt! Seeing this, I was eased a bit before he even stepped into the room. When Dr. Yang finally walked in, I found hm to be extremely friendly and most of all *optimistic*. He saw the concern in my eyes, heard it in my voice and he did his best to assure me that i would be okay. He also did something I look for in any doctor: he carefully explained things to me like an adult. He broke down medical terminology for me, explained how it related to me and then explained in detail just how we were going to solve the problem. I was only with him maybe fifteen minutes, but he gave me enough information to fill a half hour (it's ok, I absorbed it pretty quickly). When I had a follow up appointment with Dr. Yang, it was actually a few weeks earlier than he had originally anticipated. He had no problem with this and despite his office being positively jam packed, he managed to see me within 10 minutes of my appointment window and was once again reassuring and informative. I feel very fortunate to be under Dr. Yang's care and recommend him highly to anyone with orthopedic issues. read more

Dismissive, condescending and unsympathetic. After a traumatic fall and passing out, my elbow clicks and snaps. He said every arm clicks. Does your arm click? I don't know anyone who has that problem. I've been in pain for over five years now and he basically said there's nothing wrong with me. Walked out of the room and told his assistant to give me names of doctors at their pain center. When i looked up their names, they had horrible reviews. What I will remember about this doctor is the condescending look on his face. He was not at all interested in helping me. read more

I made a Yelp account just to write a review of Dr. Yang. I have been an avid boxer for over a decade, and I had been suffering from severe medial epicondylitis for over 2 years prior to seeing Dr. Yang. At the advice of a sports doctor that I saw before finding Dr. Yang (who shall go unnamed), I tried many different non-surgical treatments to cure my ailment, to no avail. After 6 months of frustration and failed treatments, I decided to see Dr. Yang to explore surgical options. During our first consultation, I was immediately impressed with Dr. Yang's knowledge, professionalism and patience. My condition was a major issue in my life and something I needed to fix one way or another. Having never had surgery, I was very nervous to go under the knife. Luckily, Dr. Yang exudes competence -- I felt completely comfortable going through with the operation after spending a few sessions with him. I had surgery in late March, and now as I type this in early July, I'm back to lifting weights, with boxing on my near-term horizon as I continue to progress. I have been a bit of a klutz and had serveal bone fractures at a time when I ice-skated regularly; more recently I broke my wrist and Dr. Yang has always been the orthopedist I've use. To put it mildly, he is outstanding!!!! Aside from his superb clicical skills, he is the kind of physician everyone dreams of having for the time he take to explain your injury, assures you have all your questions answered, and follows up with a personal call with check in. BEST doctor ever for issues with hand or wrist. He's apparently a renown orthopaedic surgeon and chief of surgery at Lenox Hill Hospital and I was referred to him from a friend who's highly respected in his profession in Europe. Dr. Yang's a professor at NYU, graduated from Yale, and a Master from Harvard. I also noticed some 'best doctor' awards from NYMag or some similar publication hanging in the office. Above all, he's patient, explains things in a crystal clear, thoughtful way, and if you've got any issues with something as important as your hand, uh yeah, I'd go to the best in NY, which really is Dr. Yang. read more

Beware: I received a bill 2 years after my visits with Dr.Yang. The bill was for $2,000!!! After over a dozen phone calls between the billing department and my insurance company they determined I owe $250. But why wasn't I billed at the time of service? Dr. Yang is professional, knowledgeable, well-manners and, most importantly, patient to answer all your questions. I had a thumb tendon inflammation issue resulted from repeated lifting of my new-born daughter. After seeing my primary doctor, a terrible osteopathic acupuncturist and 3 physical therapies over a 3-month period, Dr. Yang finally gave me the correct diagnosis. After the cortisone injection didn't help me much (since the inflammation was for a long time due to all the wrong diagnosis/treatment plans), Dr. Yang performed a surgery on my hand to relieve the inflammation. His surgical skill is excellent. He also took the time to personally call me for follow up after the surgery. I would highly recommend him for any hand-related issues! read more

Dr. Yang is an amazing doctor and surgeon. Last year, I fractured my hand and needed surgery. I got a few opinions from other hand surgeons, and after assessing them all I chose Dr. Yang. He is calm, caring, and competent. He recognized that my hand was in bad shape but was confident that it could be fixed. Today my hand is almost perfect. I was referred to Dr Yang to repair a contracted fifth finger on my left hand. It is called a Dupuytren's contracture and it progressed over ten+ years greatly interfering with the function of my left hand. The end of May of this year Dr Yang operated and released my finger. He, his assistant, his office staff could not have been more professional and caring. He referred me for therapy. I can now touch type again. open jars and bottles, cut, chop, cook and my left hand looks normal. I no longer have to make a fist to hide the deformity from the public. Dr Yang has cared for me on a couple of occasions - once to repair a tendon I cut while washing a wine glass, and also for tendonitis (in the other hand!). As a self-pay was pleased to find the billing code used was near the bottom of range established for a visit, clearly geared to the actual contact-time spent as it should be. At a previous NYU medical visit, they tried to bill me for a full contact hour when that visit took far less time and I had to demand to see a department administrator who quickly made the adjustment. I was in a motorcycle accident and broke my right humerus, forearm bones, and several bones in my hand.
