First visit to this restaurant on a sunny Saturday afternoon. Great service, good atmosphere on the rooftop restaurant. The hummus appetizer was good, especially the fresh, crisp cucumber, carrot and celery spears served along with the freshly baked pita wedges. And the black bean burger was OUT OF THIS WORLD! I'll come back for this reason alone. Freshly made, you could tell the cook didn't just pull an already-made patty out of the freezer. Fries that came with it went untouched, save for one. (Too much hummus, I suppose) it was very crispy and not at all greasy. Only one drawback was the waiting area for a table is small, but they use most of that space for people eating, so I get that. I recently dined at RyeBelles where I sampled all the appetizers as well as the pizzas. I can not express how fantastic the majority of the food tasted. I would rate each menu item 3+ stars. This restaurant is the best place I've been to in St. Joseph. It was so enjoyable, I returned the very next night to try the rest of the menu. The atmosphere was relaxed and warm. Wood panel walls make the main dining area cozy and perfect for a cold winter while the rooftop deck will never be empty during the summer. There's also a balcony with seating that overlooks the downtown street. With a wrap around bar, this place is ideal for happy hours or just a casual drink with a friend. The staff was extremely friendly and on top of their game considering its only been open for a few days. The first night the drinks were a bit light handed but that was quickly adjusted the second time I attended. That meant they listened to constructive feedback... a sure sign of customer focused business! This is the type of place someone would frequent. Prices were great especially because the entire experience was so good. Starters ran from $4 - $9, salads were all less than $10, sandwiches were about $7 - $9, and entrees were $11 - $27 (most under $17). The wine was $6 - $8 and call drinks were about $6. I would definitely recommend this place to anyone who visits. The Food I ate: Sliders: The meat was fresh and cooked perfectly, the grilled onions were a perfect compliment to the egg yolk buns. I prefer a softer bun but everyone else loved it as is. This will be my go to appetizer. Artichoke Spinach Dip: Yummmm. Cream cheese and spinach and artichoke was well seasoned and creamy. I felt it's one of the best dips I tasted. Fried Zucchini: Fresh, al dente, and tasty breading. The best part of this place was the dipping sauce... a must have. I think this sauce will be great on a variety of dishes. Quesadilla: I had the chicken. It was bold in flavor with well seasoned veggies inside. Just the right amount of kick. The sauce for the fried zucchini was awesome with this. Calamari (sauteed): This dish comes fried or sauteed. I prefer it to be a tad bit more salty but I like salt. My other friends preferred it as is because it was light, fresh, and not over powering. Besides, they said "I can always add salt". So I did - lo & behold, the table salt & pepper were premium ingredients. Coarse ground pepper and sea salt or kosher salt. Not sure which one exactly but it wasn't iodized table salt. Shoestring Fries: Fresh spices (salt & pepper) made these fries delicious. Chicken Wings: We ordered the boneless wings which usually come out dry at most restaurants but they were tender and good at RyeBelles. This was good but not as memorable as the other dishes. Fire Oven Pizza: There was a slew of pizzas. I ordered the "House Favorite", "Veggi", "Pesto", and "Wild Mushroom". By far the House Favorite was my favorite. The fennel sausage was perfect. A close second was a tie between the "Veggi" and "Wild Mushroom". Although the Pesto Pizza was good, it wasn't a bold in flavor. Shelly's Chicken: Who is this Shelly and why does she get a plate named after her.... oh I know why.... because this dish rocked. It came with mashed potatoes and asparagus; both were cooked properly and seasoned well. The chicken was super tender and super flavorful. This will be my go to entree, it was fantastic! read more

I went here on tuesday hoping for a great experience and was very disappointed. The bar was packed but the restaurant itself wasn't busy and my friend wasn't meeting me untl later so i took a table. I told the server my company wouldn't be here til later so i didn't want to wait to order. After getting my drink the server did NOT return to the table for 20 MINUTES. And that was after i had to flag her down. After i was finally able to order food, my friend arrived. The server upon seeing my company had arrived began rolling her eyes and talking to fellow servers about our table. Being a server myself i understand the concept of table turnover however there was no one waiting and it was still hours before their closing so the attitude was unnecessary. Thankfully the food was good and after paying the bill we relocated to the bar where we received better service. I am VERY DISAPPOINTED however in the restaurant itself....just today I commented on their facebook wall in regards to my experience...hoping to bring to light the issues with their staff and maybe just maybe an apology...upon re-checking their page a few hours later i found my comment had been deleted. Obviously this restaurant doesn't care about the impressions they are making with attitudes like that. Heard good things about this new St. Joseph restaurant but was terribly disappointed. Limited wine selection. Food mediocre. Wanted to order the calamari appetizer, but the waitress said we couldn't order it for half an hour, she thought because they were expecting a delivery (on a Friday night? maybe they were waiting for it to thaw sufficiently?) Two of us had the char grilled salmon and it was plain and overcooked. Friend had perch which I sampled and it was so mushy I had a hard time swallowing it. Fourth person in our party had scallops which he said was 'just ok.' Most of the food was barely warm. All meals were served on very large plates, which is fine if the small portions are artistically presented, but the food was just thrown on the plates with no garnish at all. Not even going to comment on the condition of the ladies' room, but I guess that in itself is a comment. Since RyeBelles is new, we might try it again to be fair. Can't say that I'm looking forward to a return visit and only hope the second time will be a pleasant surprise. read more

We were in St Joseph for a wedding and passed Rye Belles early in the day shopping & scoping out places to eat. Rye Belles menu looked interesting and was recommended by locals. We were a party of 6 and were greeted by friendly hostesses. We sat at the bar for a short wait for our table. The bartender was hustling with a big crowd around the bar and the cocktails were very good. We were let upstairs to the patio to an excellent table to watch the sunset and greeted by our waitress...I think it was Jen! High marks for attentive and friendly. There are my three stars...ambiance, staff and drinks. Three in our party had the lake perch which was good. Others had wild salmon(over cooked which is a shame for such an amazing product) one had a burger (over done) with cold fries and another chose chicken breast (over cooked and tough). Vegetable of the day was asparagus which was very thick and woody and should have been excellent as it is in season. Overall the food over done and cold. We likely would try another place to eat in St Joseph but would return for cocktails. read more

The experience was alright, but not amazing. Seems like it just another restaurant and that's it, they aren't really committed to making the customer happy. I wanted a Caesar salad instead of the only option, which is a chincy house salad, but they wouldn't let me.. Even though I offered to pay extra... My boyfriend and I were in town for the weekend and decided to sit outside somewhere we could see the sunset. Neither of us had been here before, and from the looks of their awesome rooftop deck, we thought this would be the best place! Wrong. While the roof is awesome and would be great for watching the sunset, they have a VERY limited menu for the rooftop (about 1/5 of their normal menu). Neither of us felt like eating a plain pepperoni pizza or chicken sandwich for dinner, so we went elsewhere. If you only care about the sunset, and not about a good meal, I would recommend this place. Otherwise you're better off going somewhere else. read more

We were more than a little excited about checking out this fancy rootoba with a view of the lake, stopping for a quick bite on the way back to Chicago from Ann Arbor to more fully enjoy Pure Michigan. If you are looking for a place for a quick bite in St. Joseph's, this is not your place. However, it was a lovely day so we enjoyed the patio as we waited for our food. The food was fine, but slow. I really, really wanted to love this place. Upon walking in the atmosphere and restaurant is warm and has nice ambiance. There is a fireplace and it has a cozy feel. We were sat at a table that had enough space from tables next to it, so you didn't feel like you were on top of each other. I had wine and my boyfriend had the Rybelle Relaxer martini. He enjoyed his drink and my wine was decent. We saw several tables with bread, however it was never brought to our table. We both order steaks, which were just okay. I have been to many steak places and the NY strip was quite fatty and seemed quite thin. Our server was sat four tables at the same time, so needless to say she was very busy. She apoligized and tried to be accomadating, but you could tell that she was very frazzled. I would come back probably, but order something different. read more

One of the better restaurants in St Joseph. If your looking for a good steak or some good seafood then this is probably the best option in the Joe. It's one of the nicer restaurants so it's a great place to take a date. The food has always been good here and when I've had a problem, it was immediately fixed. It was a bright sunny Wednesday afternoon/early evening, we were walking around downtown St Joseph MI looking for a place to eat after a day on the beach. Yelp gave Ryebelles a high rating with a great view, so we decided to try to get in. We did not have reservations, but we were straight from the beach, we either had a dress or shorts and t-shirts over our swim suits. I approached the hostess and I first asked if we were dressed appropriately, the hostess immediately responded "Yes!! We are a beach town and you are dressed fine". Then I asked if they could accommodate a party of 11, the hostess then informed me that they could seat us inside immediately or in 30 mins on the roof top. I looked at the time and noticed that would put us up there for a great sunset...so I said we would wait, could we take a seat in the bar and order appetizers with the kids, the hostess said of course. The kids were incredibly good...and I'm not saying that because they are mine and friends of mine....because other patrons in the bar came up and told us that they were extremely well behaved. We ordered: Wasabi asparagus, firecracker shrimp, hummus and chicken bites....ALL WERE EXCELLENT!!! And the Bartender Chris was exceptional....but that is where the pros portion of this rating ends. We proceeded to sit in the bar area for over an hour and a half....because the manager of the deck did not think he could seat us. During the hour and a half, we explained to them we would be willing to split up into two tables....nothing. The manager of the roof top explained that several tables had been served their dinner but were just sitting there....he did not turn the table.....huh???? I have a party of 11 and you don't want to turn the table?? I did not understand...the manager of the roof top then proceeded to blame everyone but himself for poor management...stating...the hostess should have never told you 30 mins...ok, we waited 90 mins...next excuse. He then told me that it was the bartenders fault....again...huh??? Why would it bee the bartenders fault....he refused to take control of the situation and never said he was sorry, never took ownership nor responsibility...now you're probably sitting there saying, he could not do anything about a table that would not leave....wrong again!!!! He just did not want to seat this large party...and then proceeded to seat smaller parties. Would have loved to try the food, since the appetizers were so wonderful...but CANNOT tolerate poor management. Oh and one woman over heard me speaking in the restroom about a table that would not leave and she proceeded to explain she was on vacation.....hello....so am I - is your vacation more important than mine???!!! Between the poor management and the poor patrons who do not understand that is a business and they make a living by turning tables....left a bitter taste in my mouth....good luck if you try to eat here. read more

Fantastic views, fantastic food, and fantastic service! My husband and I enjoyed a delicious meal on the rooftop to celebrate our anniversary. Thankfully we had received great advice to use an app to put our name in ahead of our arrival. The hostess greeted us by name when we arrived, and we waited less than 5 min. for our table. There were so many wonderful sounding menu items, that it was hard to narrow down our choices. We will definitely be going back soon to try something new. We highly recommend Ryebelles! read more

OUR server was very good however several people around us were obviously having issues getting their servers attention so I do believe it's usually an issue. We enjoyed drinks on The Rooftop. The selection was not great but adequate. Waitstaff friendly and accommodating. We dined indoors. The grilled grouper was delicious. Three of the four of us ordered the grouper and all were very glad we did. The other guest ordered the perch and was very pleased with her choice. Beautiful salad and the sides were very good, as well. Portions were a little large but I imagine that is a plus for some. The waitstaff was extremely nice and helpful. Attentive. Wood fired cheese bread (made with pizza crust) was really good, but the Firecracker Shrimp should just be renamed Crack Shrimp. I woke up craving it and am thinking about getting another order to go tonight. Am anxious to see how the roof will be this summer. Wonderful new restaurant in town!!! Ate there with a friend on a Friday night. The place was packed so we chose to sit at the bar rather than wait for a table. Once seated at the bar, the service was very attentive and our food came quickly. The menu is varied with a nice choice of appetizers, sandwiches, wood-fired pizzas and entrees. Prices are reasonable to moderate; entrees include soup or salad. We both had fish entrees and were very pleased with the portion size and flavor of our meals. The decor is cozy with a fireplace and beautiful old wood bar. It was after dark but I imagine there will be a great lake view in daylight hours. Can't wait for the outdoor deck in the spring! Only negative is the wait for a table which the hostess said is less on week nights. Absolutely will recommend this new restaurant to my local friends and visitors! read more

In the St. Joseph, MI area there are some restaurants you WANT to return to - Clementine's, The Pump House, and Schu's are some examples of local restaurants that have neat style and tasty food. Unfortunately, RyeBelles is NOT a restaurant you will ever want to return to. When you first walk into the restaurant it is very appealing to look around with a nice fireplace to the side and a central bar surrounded by dining tables which line the outside edge of the restaurant. The far wall consists of many windows that look out towards Lake Michigan. Everything is pleasant until you start to receive your food and drinks. My Fiancé and I started with two alcoholic beverages. The soda in each was lacking any syrup in the mix. So each drink was a shot of alcohol mixed with carbonated water and ice cubes. The tablecloth is covered in brown paper which I am sure aids in the speed of turning over tables for the next set of customers that come through. This however, detracts from the atmosphere of the restaurant and you are left to stare at the multiple wet ring marks your drink glasses make. Any small spill of food from your plate is proudly displayed as discolored wet paper for the rest of your meal. The appetizer and soup we received was plain tasting without any distinct flavor. The tomato sauce for our dish was very watery and bland. Our soup was edible but again did not stir any interest or excitement to ever eat it again. Our entrees arrived and were presented well. I had the New York Strip steak and my Fiancé had the Shelly's Chicken entrée. The steak was cooked well but had no seasoning that I could detect. The mashed potatoes were extremely mushy and flavorless. The asparagus was cooked but again without any hint of creativity in the taste department. The Shelly's Chicken is described as being made with sun-dried tomatoes with lemon caper sauce. It looks good, but tastes like a plain baked piece of chicken. The sauce is again watery and does not adhere to the chicken. We skipped desert and did not ask for our leftovers to be wrapped up. We noticed the table beside us also did not finish their plates and did not want their leftovers to go either. The bread was the best part of the dinner and you guessed it - it tasted like plain white bread. When leaving the restaurant I stopped to use the restroom. I wish I had used the restroom before getting a table at RyeBelles as I would not have stayed to dine there. Outdated and fairly dirty little bathroom. Yuck. At the end of the experience we felt like we ate at a gross little diner that had an interior face-lift to look like something grander than it really was. The restaurant was packed with nearly everyone dressed in business casual attire. I don't understand the draw to this place. We will not return. This is the first restaurant review I have ever written. The restaurant was so disappointing I feel I had to warn others. Passing through on our way from Detroit area to Chicago and Saint Joe's seemed a good town to stop in. Love it anytime we can get a Key West setting in Michigan and this was as close as it comes. Sat on the rooftop deck which allows a view of the eastern shore of Lake Michigan and the sunset. A trio entertained us while we ate and boy, did we eat well. Hubby had a Party Barge from Silver Harbor Brewing Company (St Joe's). His Double Cut Pork Chop (close to 1" thick) was grilled and topped with chipotle pesto. My Lake Perch was lightly floured, fried and served with caper tartar sauce. We both enjoyed our sides of baked potato (with butter and sour cream) and grilled asparagus. Don't forget to walk a few blocks to the lakefront beach and watch a volleyball game in progress, observe kids splash in the fountain area or just chill while watching the sun set.
