Did not realize at first that this was a hotel bar, but after spending an evening there it makes more sense. It's in a fabulous location in Five Points, and adds a cool niche element to the already happening night life. I think this is a really neat place in theory - great aesthetic, interesting menu, but the execution leaves a lot to be desired.
First of all, the lights were incredibly bright and really threw off the vibe. When I went on a Friday night, there was sports playing on the TV in the bar. I completely get having a big game on, but there are TONS of sports bars in this area and this didn't seem like a big game. Sports on the TV in a trendy cocktail bar just didn't jive for me.
I tried one of their smoked cocktails and I will say that it was very unique. I'd never had one quite like that before. The bartender, while incredibly friendly, did not know how to make the Manhattan so we went with the Old Fashioned instead. But at $15, it's a one time experience for me.
I think that RX has A LOT of potential, and I would be interested in going back, but there is definitely room for improvement if it plans on competing in Bham's cocktail scene. read more
