My wife and I try to do a Segway tour on every trip we take, so when we moved to Richmond we decided it would be a great way to explore our new city. We did the Richmond Landmark Segway Tour and the Hollywood Cemetery Segway Tour with RVA On Wheels and had great experiences both times. I highly recommend their tours to anyone new to the city, visiting, or looking for a fun, new way to explore a city you've long called your own.

We had guests in town for Christmas so we scheduled a tour with RVA On Wheels for a Segway tour of Shockoe Bottom. We started with training on the Segway to learn how to operate it. It was very easy to maneuver and easy to learn. We started the tour near the canal walk and made our way toward Shiplock. Along the way we would stop for points of interest and Jonathan, our tour guide, would tell us history of the area. He was very knowledgeable and made the tour very interesting and fun. We definitely learned a lot. The Segways were really fun to ride on. Makes me want to buy one for myself. I would highly recommend RVA On Wheels for their Segway tours. They also rent bikes. I look forward to taking another tour with them in the future.

    They also rent electric bikes!

I bought the Groupon for the Segway tour months in advance. As our trip to Richmond grew nearer, the weather forecast looked drearier and drearier. My husband loves riding segways so we decided to keep the reservation and we are both glad we did. We bundled up (gloves, scarves, winter coats) to ride in the chilly 40 degree weather. The Segways maximum speed is 13 miles per hour. If you haven't been before, it's incredibly easy and quick to get the hang of it. The tour was fun, and informational. The tour visited the Christopher Newport Cross, Browns Island, the site of Edgar Allen Poe's childhood home (spoiler- it's a parking lot), and the Virginia State Capitol. The tour also showcased other fun facts about Richmond. I highly recommend this tour for locals and tourists. Its a fun way to learn more about the city.

Tour started at the entrance and we went to notable spots. We were only 7 in the tour. Our tour guide Doug who has been doing it for 14 seasons was very knowledgeable. He shared interesting facts, architectural/art styles, history of people and places/Richmond. We saw the iron dog, graves of the 2 US presidents (John Monroe's Tomb and John Tyler's Monument), Lewis Ginter Mausoleum, Palmer Chapel Mausoleum (and the overlooks on its sides), among others. It was a nice tour. I learned a lot. If you plan to go there on your own, there's a map from the website that you can download and use where there are markers for the notable spots. Google Maps does not have these spots in it. The restroom can be found on the left shortly after entering the cemetery. Lewis Ginter Mausoleum shows Victorian era architecture. When you peek through the door, you would see the nice Tiffany glass artwork behind. With its history, nice views overlooking the James River, the peaceful and quiet environment, this is a place worth checking out.

Despite that, I arrived on time but other guests did not and arrived over 30 minutes late. My 1 hour ghost tour was 3 hours long. However, I really enjoyed the ghost tour guide and the content was Ok. The content of the two hour trolley tour was really informative and comprehensive but the trolley struggled to get up many of the hills in Richmond and was loud and the exhaust smelly. Having the older, southern gentleman tour guide refer to me as a yankee I did not appreciate- not because it isn't true but because I was raised in the deep south and more southern than him. Asking questions was not encouraged on the trolley tour.

Our cruise was quite full, so I would recommend getting their around 20 minutes early if you have a preference of where you sit. It is in the heart of downtown so its mainly street parking, there is a paid lot slightly further down that is 12 dollars for the day. The cruise itself is fun as you float down the canal and learn more about the history in the area. We went around 3pm which was the perfect time as it wasn't too hot but still sunny enough to enjoy. While I had a great time, I think it was more so a novel experience. The ride felt a bit short with the sights remaining quite consistent since the canal is small/short. We had a great tour and a very personalized one since only three guests (including my friend and I) were on the tour. The white house of the confederacy is full of history and our guide provided a ton of background on Jefferson Davis and his family, which was particularly cool since I had recently gone with my parents to the historical naval base where he was held prisoner for several years after the end of the civil war. The furnishings were very beautiful and nicely maintained, amazing how often these estates of antiquity had to sell their things to make ends meet and then organizations have to chase them down later to bring everything back together. Still, very cool to be in the rooms where so much history was made. It's so unusual for such an important part of history to be surrounded by hospital buildings, though that is the nature of Richmond: a whole lot of stories in a relatively compact region. Lucky to have been able to learn a bit more about it here! Overall: 4.5 stars ----- Pros: - Excellent tour guide who clearly had made a study of the many features of the house and its former occupants. - White house and its furniture were in beautiful shape, clearly the organization is doing a great job keeping everything maintained. - Price for the tour wasn't too bad considering you get a personalized tour for it. Cons: - The parking situation here is a pain but doable if you plan ahead.
