It's amazing how big SoCal is! It is hard for me to believe I have never been to Laguna Beach before this weekend. There was even a show on MTV based on this small beach town, LOL. This might explain why there are so many art galleries on every street corner and alleyway, since it is just as beautiful and picturesque as everyone says. My friend pointed out this art gallery as we walked along the Main Street on our way to the ocean, and when we went inside, we saw some of the most magnificent pieces of art hanging on the walls. I found it to be absolutely fantastic! We met the owner and he told us all of the art pieces were created by Ruth Mayer, aka Mama Mayer! Everything was so vivid and vibrant, we were all blown away. The Laguna Beach gallery is no longer there. We went by there today as we live in the area and have a painting of hers (Norian's Wave) that we need to sell. We talked to her son, who has a gallery next door, who indicated her gallery closed shortly after her death in 2023. read more

I purchased a beautiful painting at the Gallery in Catalina. Unfortunately it is no longer there. At the time I purchased I did not have a lot of money. Ms Mayers son said I could make payments and when I had it paid off I could get the painting and Ms. Mayer would personally sign the back for me. The value went from $1800.00 to $8000.00. I love it so much, but it is still in the same packaging that I got it in. I have never put it on a wall. I have been trying to get a hold of anyone at their gallery but the numbers have been disconnected. Does anyone know how I can get in touch with them. I know that Ruth Mayer has recently past away. Stopped in on a whim and left quite impressed. This artist has very diverse work and is obviously extremely talented. She does a lot of hidden imagery in her paintings and also has several paintings that slightly change depending on the direction of the lighting. I was lucky enough to come in at a relatively quiet time and Ruth Mayer, the artist, was there to give a personal tour of some of her paintings, telling the stories of their creation and pointing out some of the hidden imagery and the meaning behind it. What a fun treat! Although her work is beyond my financial means to purchase I would definitely encourage anyone with the time to stop in for a few minutes to take a look at this extraordinary woman's work. read more

Ruthie is a great artist that paints with so much feeling. I have 7 of her originals and one print hanging on my wall. Three are of my grandchildren that my husband and I had her paint. When you walk into her gallery you see such wonderful paintings with bright colors that tells a story. Ruthie has won many awards and no matter what your tastes are, there is such a variety it makes it hard to leave without buying at least one of her paintings. read more

This gallery is incredible! I do recommend taking a walk through here just to see it. I did see several painting that just grabbed my attention. Some of my favorites were the ones that changed with the lights, the one for the city of Pasadena, and the beautiful painting of the lady in the upstairs portion. Ruth Mayer is an amazing artist. She is also very warm and friendly, enjoys talking with all of us who come in just to view her work or make a purchase. I own over a dozen of her paintings, have been collecting them for years, and would enjoy having a few more but I've run out of wall space! When Ruth isn't in the gallery I've always had great help from others who work there. Can't wait to come back for another visit. My personal favorites are Liquid Sunlight and Canterbury. So beautiful, and depending on the time of day the light moves and changes the colors and warmth on the canvases, very relaxing. read more

Bright & quirky, this gallery is a only few steps away from the ocean near the main beach area in Laguna. Although not the typical ritzy gallery that you would expect (especially in a place like Laguna), the quality of Ruth's work surpasses most other art galleries that I've been to. All of the art here is her work! I've been to this particular gallery about 3 times. My first few visits were a few years ago; I remember walking through the gallery gathering my own interpretations of the beautiful art. Who knew there were so many different types of paintings? So many different textures of paints, and styles? Due to the assortment of painted art, I was initially under the impression that the gallery displayed the work of several different artists. By spending only a few minutes really examining her work, her incredible talent is evident through the obvious mastery of her skills as an artist. Her paintings contain messages, images, and other details that are not always obvious to the viewer. These hidden messages and details in her work are what will blow your mind! This was a characteristic of her work that I was not aware of until I met the artist, herself, in person! This past weekend, my friend and I happened to stop in, and Ruth (the artist) and her husband were in the gallery giving a few customers personal tours. Not only that, but she had an easel set up and fresh paints on a palette by the entrance. She is the sweetest lady! I can't say enough wonderful things about her and her husband. She told us that she was specifically requested to paint a portrait for Pope John Paul II. She is an amazing woman and artist! My favorite painting of hers is rather new: titled "Tiger". If you stop in, it is a MUST see (with the proper lighting of course)! So I guess my review speaks for itself. Meeting Ruth has left me inspired beyond belief. Over the past 10 years I have been in the Ruth Mayer Gallery on several occasions admiring the works they have on display. It usually will coincide with one of the many festivals the city of Laguna Beach has each year like The Festival of the Arts. I am used to going into the gallery and generally being ignored (sometimes that is a good thing) but recently I sent several emails and left a phone message regarding a piece of Ruth Mayer I purchased. No response to either method even though it is specifically addressing a piece of Ruth Mayer art. we wandered in here because the paintings had great composition, colors, and lighting. glad we did cuz there was so much more inside!! ruth mayer is a local artist who has beautiful striking oil paintings. she seems like such a fun, quirky person from the pics although we did not meet her that day. there is a long horizontal painting of NYC painted before 9/11. it was coincidentally being displayed in the front window during the tragic time. she drew an angel in the background protecting the city. the city of new york owns it. when the new WTC building is built (fall 2013), this painting will be displayed there. she was commissioned to paint for the pope too. fun fact: ruth mayer is in each painting. she does this subtly. it's like a "where's ruth?" game. her grandson who works there says that there are still paintings where he hasn't found her yet. heheh. read more

I went to this gallery couple days ago and as soon as i walked in i felt relaxed and at home every single painting is so well thought and beautiful! I spent about 45 minutes to one hour looking at them and asking the lady who worked there (which was very nice and patient) all the questions i had about them. If you are truly into art and understand the true meaning of what's behind every piece of art then I highly encourage you to visit this gallery specially when Ruth is there (normally for Artwalk). Her work of art is beyond imagination and she's not in it for profit. Most of her work are not even for sell and are only for museums. Ruth is amazingly nice. My wife and I spent our honeymoon in Laguna Beach and picked up a Limited Edition print of "Paradise", while we were there. That was almost 35 years ago. The years have taken their toll on me but Ruth still looks great! The print is still displayed in the living room.
